India's household consumption set to pick up in 2-3 quarters: Report
The overall household consumption is set to pick up in the next two to three quarters on rural strength, a Swiss brokerage said on Tuesday. Softened inflation, which boosts purchasing power, improving crop outlook on good monsoons and a $20 billion social welfare spends on women are set to strengthen rural consumption, UBS Securities said in a report. Urban consumption will "stabilise" on aspects like RBI's rate cuts, $10 billion of policy stimulus through personal income tax changes and improved availability of credit, it said. "Even as rural activity is gaining traction, we believe it is still too early to expect a broad-based recovery in household consumption, as rural consumption accounts for less than half a percentage share of the total," its chief India economist Tanvee Gupta Jain said. "In our base case, we expect overall household consumption to start picking up over the next 2-3 quarters as rural consumption strengthens," she said. There is a "divide" within rural consumption wherein the demand for mass-market products is muted while premium categories continue to grow, the report said. Real rural wage growth adjusted for food inflation rose to a six-year high of 4.5 per cent while agricultural terms of trade "worsened" on lower food prices in the June quarter, the report said. Rural consumer sentiment was up, two-wheeler and tractor sales were up 9 per cent and 35 per cent on-quarter, respectively, and rural fast-moving consumer goods sales were also robust, the report said. On the urban consumption front, the report said demand indicators, including passenger car sales and production of durable goods, fell sequentially in the June quarter, even as urban consumer sentiment remained stable. The $ 55 billion payout to government employees from 2026, as the eighth pay commission recommendations get implemented, will help the urban demand, it said.

Unclaimed deposits with banks stood at over Rs 52,174 crore in FY24: Minister
New Delhi: The government on Tuesday revealed that unclaimed deposits with public sector banks (PSBs) and private sector banks (PVBs) rose to more than Rs 52,174 crore in three fiscals (2022-2024) -- from Rs 42,271 crore in FY23. The share of unclaimed deposits with the PSBs was Rs 45,140.78 crore, and for PVBs, it was Rs 7,033.82 crore in FY24, which were transferred to the Depositor Education and Awareness (DEA) fund maintained by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), said Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply. The amount of the unclaimed funds lying with the insurance companies in three fiscals from 2022-2024 was Rs 21,718 crore, he added. As per the details of the fund disclosed in the RBI's Annual Report, the total unclaimed deposits (till March 31, 2024) were Rs 78,212.53 crore. The RBI has launched the Centralised Web Portal UDGAM (Unclaimed Deposits-Gateway to Access Information) for the public. The said portal facilitates the registered users to search unclaimed deposits/amounts across multiple banks at one place in a centralised manner. The Depositor Education and Awareness Fund Scheme, 2014, issued by the RBI, governs the norms related to unclaimed deposits and outlines details of utilisation of the fund, including inter alia, promotion of depositors' interests and other purposes as may be specified by the RBI. Balances in savings and current accounts that remain inoperative for ten years, or term deposits not claimed within ten years from the date of maturity, are classified as Unclaimed Deposits and subsequently transferred by banks to the DEA fund maintained by the central Bank. As per the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDAI), all insurers who have unclaimed amounts of policyholders for a period of more than 10 years are required to transfer the same with interest to the Senior Citizens' Welfare Fund (SCWF) every year. Further, even after transfer of the unclaimed amounts to the SCWF, the policyholders/ claimant continues to be eligible to claim the amounts due under their respective policies for a period of up to 25 years. The SCWF is utilised for such schemes for the promotion of the welfare of the senior citizens in line with the National Policy on Older Persons and the National Policy on Senior Citizens, the minister said. Market in middle overs, investors should focus on discipline and strategy: Report
Mumbai: The current consolidation phase in the market is like middle overs in cricket -- discipline and strategy -- where investors should not take risks but build the portfolio for a rally, a report said on Tuesday. Investors should not increase equity portfolio allocation, and maintain 65 per cent allocation in large caps. As much as 35 per cent can be invested in mid- and small-caps, suggested Motilal Oswal Private Wealth in its report. For investors currently under-allocated to equities, they could consider lump-sum investments in the hybrid category, and a staggered investment approach through SIPs or STPs would be more prudent for pure equity-oriented categories, the report added. Due to limited room for further capital gains, softening of the yields should be used as an opportunity to gradually reduce the exposure in long-term bonds maturing in 10 to 15 years. As the yield curve steepened due to RBI policy easing and liquidity interventions, investors may be "overweight on accrual strategies across the credit spectrum by allocating to private credit strategies, InvITs and select NCDs," the report said. Arbitrage funds and income-plus-arbitrage FoF are tax-efficient fixed-income alternatives, it said. Silver can be considered a tactical play, though not as a substitute for gold, the report said. The MOPW report was neutral on gold. India is a high-scoring pitch with excellent macro conditions and has all the ingredients for a long innings, the report said. Resembling the initial PowerPlay overs in cricket, the March-April 2025 correction was a safe time to be aggressive. The current consolidation phase is like "middle overs" in a 50 overs match. "In the middle overs, discipline and strategy win, not blind aggression. Hence, one should focus on building and avoid taking aggressive risks," the brokerage said. Despite foreign institutional investor outflows and high valuation across market capitalisations and industries there are pockets of high-growth opportunities, along with the positive impact of a soft and stable dollar on foreign institutional investor flows, the report said. India's services exports, production-linked incentives (PLI) pay-offs, free trade agreements (FTA) with other countries, and benign crude are expected to reduce the impact of tariff imposition. While the macroeconomic environment appeared stable, high-frequency indicators presented a mixed outlook from a near-term perspective.
