Officials told to remain vigilant in view of heavy rains
Addressing a teleconference with sub-collectors, RDOs, tahsildars, MPDOs and irrigation officials on Wednesday, the Collector reviewed the situation and instructed officials to intensify inspections of reservoirs, tanks, low-lying areas and old bridges.
He noted that while rainfall in June and July was normal, August has so far recorded 146.5 mm — 27.8% above normal. Heavy rainfall was reported in Kurnool Urban, Kurnool Rural, Kallur, Chippagiri, Halaharvi, Alur, Maddikera, and Nandavaram mandals, with more downpours expected over the next few days.
The Collector ordered immediate inspection of Sunkesula, Gajuladinne and Pandikona reservoirs, and instructed tahsildars to take measures to ensure safety in riverbank areas. Inundated low-lying areas should be drained using motors, and villages must be kept free from stagnant water to prevent outbreaks of diseases. The District Public Health Officer was tasked with implementing anti-mosquito spraying and other sanitation drives, while MPDOs were told to coordinate with panchayat secretaries and EOPRDs to ensure proper hygiene in rural areas. Officials from the Rural Water Supply Department were directed to safeguard drinking water sources from contamination and transport water if necessary. The Collector also instructed the District Education Officer to declare holidays if rains make it unsafe for children to attend school. Officials were told to identify old, dilapidated houses and alert residents to relocate if necessary.
As part of the 'Palleku Podam' (Let's Go to the Village) programme scheduled for next week, special officers will visit villages to inspect sanitation, drinking water, anganwadi centres, schools and other civic amenities. Mandal and village-level officials must accompany them and be prepared with inspection reports in the prescribed proforma.
The teleconference was attended by Adoni Sub-Collector Maurya Bharadwaj, RDOs Sandeep Kumar and Bharat Naik, District Project Manager Anupama, Irrigation SE Bala Chandra Reddy, Rural Water Supply SE Nageswara Rao, DPHO Bhaskar, and other senior officials.
The Collector emphasised that coordinated efforts and swift response at every level are essential to tackle the challenges posed by the heavy rains.

Storm hold on for 80-78 win over Dream to snap 6-game losing streak in Vancouver
The Seattle Storm and Atlanta Dream made history on Friday, playing the WNBA's first regular season game in Canada. The game, which took place at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, was a fitting appetizer before the arrival of the Toronto Tempo next season. The two teams decided to put on a show for the Canadian audience, with the Storm holding on to beat the Dream 80-78. The win was not only a victory for Pacific Northwest dominance, but also ended a six-game losing streak for Seattle — while also snapping a six-game winning streak for Atlanta. A packed crowd showed out to watch the neutral site game, setting the tone for an exciting, physical matchup. After taking a small lead at halftime, the Storm started to pull away with a strong run in the third quarter. But then Atlanta started storming right back, overcoming a 12-point deficit to take a lead with less than five minutes remaining. The two teams kept it close. With three minutes left, a foul gave Rhyne Howard three free throws, which she nailed to give the Dream a five-point lead. But another trio of free throws from Skylar Diggins pulled Seattle back within one basket. The Storm retook the lead with a minute remaining in the game, and eventually held a two-point lead with just seconds left. Atlanta had one more chance to send the game to overtime, but Howard's shot went off the backboard after some strong defense from Seattle. Though narrow, it marked a crucial win for a Storm team that has been on a major slide lately. Before Friday, Seattle had lost eight of its last 10 games; five of those losses were by four points or less. (One of the losses was a 24-point loss to the struggling Dallas Wings.) Skylar Diggins, who has had a couple of slow games lately, ended the game with a 21-point double-double, ending with 21 points and 11 assists in the win. Diggins also had a killer buzzer-beater to end the third quarter. Four other Storm players ended in double-digits on points, including rookie center Dominique Malonga, who continues to have impressive efficiency off the bench with 12 points and eight rebounds in 18 minutes of play. Howard did her best to try for the win, ending with a team-high 21 points, while Brionna Jones ended with an 18-point double-double, with 10 rebounds. But it's a disappointing ending for Atlanta, who were on a stellar streak heading into Friday. The third-place Dream have looked dominant for the past few months, holding a 21-12 record and putting up major victories. Friday marks the end of the season series for the Storm and Dream. Though Atlanta schooled the Storm with a 85-75 win in Seattle on Wednesday, but on Friday, the Storm got the last laugh to even the series at 2-2 overall.
