Football transfer rumours: Arsenal and Liverpool to battle for Sesko's signature?

The Guardian2 days ago

With the distraction of actual football finally over, the football fans among us are finally able to focus on what this is all really about: whether James Trafford will leave Burnley for Newcastle.
The 22-year-old burst on to the scene when leaving Manchester City as the third most-expensive British goalkeeper in history, despite never having played in the Championship, never mind the Premier League. Newcastle tried to buy him last summer, but in true football is the winner style, instead sold Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest and took the Greek keeper Odysseas Vlachodimos in part exchange, thus helping satisfy PSR concerns. But now they're back with a vengeance!
Meantime, Aston Villa – buzzing after Marcus Rashford's stunning return of four goals (two pens) in 17 games – are showing an interest in taking another Manchester United winger. After the roaring success of Jadon Sancho's loan to Chelsea – 41 appearances, five goals, £5m paid to swerve his permanent presence – they naturally fancy adding him to their squad. There is competition for his signature from Milan and Napoli, with Antonio Conte seeing him as the perfect player to ensure he remains furious at all times.
Nevertheless Chelsea, will, of course, be busy splashing money, as they always do. The less-than-prolific Liam Delap is already in, the lure of hearing the famous Champions League anthem (from the bench) too much to resist, and now the club are seeking to sign Mike Maignan from Milan. But, unimpressed by the £25m asking price, they are set to return with a more realistic offer of £745m and a 498-year contract.
Elsewhere, Everton, are hoping to attract a new centre-forward. Dominic Calvert-Lewin, out of contract at the end of the month, may leave, and there is interest in Thierno Barry – not as great a name as Romelu Lukaku, but one it would nevertheless be exciting to experience in scouse. Villarreal, though, are not keen to sell and, having qualified for the Champions League, do not need to.
Across London, Arsenal's Mikel Arteta has experienced a revelation: teams are better if they have someone to score goals. As such, he is trying to sign Benjamin Sesko from Leipzig – though he might face competition from Liverpool, who will have a vacancy should Darwin Nuñez depart.
Liverpool have not had any offers for Luis Díaz. But should one materialise – Barcelona and Al-Nassr are reportedly interested – they may seek to replace him with Anthony Gordon, whose luxuriant barnet evokes Terry McDermott, Phil Thompson, Kevin MacDonald and other Kop heartthrobs of days gone by.
Talking of which, Harvey Elliot may also be on the move. He is rumoured to have rejected a move to Nottingham Forest as he does not think they suit his playing style and is said to favour a move to Serie A instead.

EXCLUSIVE Gen Z are meant to be tech-savvy... but 1.5 million admit they were duped online by social media ticket scams to see their favourite bands

Millions of supposedly tech-savvy Gen Zs admit they have been easily scammed on social media trying to get sold out tickets to see their favourite music artists. A survey found a shocking 1.5 million of the youngsters (21 per cent) admitted to being fooled online by fraudsters last summer when buying tickets for live music events. And 2.2 million of the digital natives (32 per cent) admitted to being scammed on either Facebook Marketplace or Instagram. Despite over half (52 per cent) of Gen Zs having seen an increase in suspicious ticket listings in social media since last year, they are still falling for the scams. As the most prolific social media users, they are set to lose a total of £685.9million to fraudsters tricking them online. The research by StubHub UK found that the younger generation were so desperate to get their hands on the tickets that they failed to do basic due diligence. A quarter (25 per cent) of those that were scammed admitted they didn't check the seller's identity before transferring them the money. What's more, over two in ten (21 per cent) of Gen Z also revealed they would rather risk it in a desperate bid to see their favourite act, than miss out on a must-see concert. How to avoid ticket scams 1. Buy from a trusted marketplace Always use well-established marketplaces which offer secure transactions and good customer ratings on independent review platforms like Trustpilot. 2. Check for buyer protections Ensure the platform offers guarantees against fraud, non-delivery, or cancellation 3. Make sure you can get help if you need it Look for customer support that has a human at the end of the phone, so you are supported if you have any questions or concerns. 4. Pay securely Always use a credit or debit card for additional fraud protection. Avoid bank transfers or cash payments, which offer little recourse in case of scams. 5. Verify ticket information Check that the event details, seat locations, and ticket types match what is advertised on official event pages. Avoid listings with vague information 6. Be wary of prices that seem too good to be true! If a deal looks too cheap compared to market prices, it may not be legitimate 'Remember, don't risk it! Avoid purchasing tickets from social media sites such as Facebook, TikTok and WhatsApp where your transactions are not protected and you are more vulnerable to scams,' say the experts at StubHub UK Meanwhile 30 per cent of Brits between the ages of 25-34 admitted to being scammed when buying tickets for live events last summer on social media - the equivalent of 1.4 million Millennials. It comes as UK music fans could be hit by nine million scam attempts on social media in their search for gig tickets this summer, as it's revealed almost a third (32 per cent) would resort to using social media to find last minute tickets for their favourite artists. While London sees high volumes, scammers are increasingly targeting fans in Leeds, Birmingham and Manchester, which are now the scamming hotspots outside the capital. This will likely spike ahead of major tours set to begin this summer by major artists like Oasis, Billie Eilish, Lana Del Rey and Olivia Rodrigo. The research follows hundreds of Oasis fans who have fallen victim to scams amid the rush to buy tour tickets and lost £346 on average, according to a high street bank's analysis of its own data. Lloyds Bank said hundreds of fans desperate to see the Gallagher brothers' reunion tour had fallen victim to fraudsters, with more than 90 per cent of reported cases starting with fake adverts or posts on social media. Victims have been asked to pay upfront for the tickets and once payment has been made, the scammers vanished, leaving many out of pocket. Scams involved fake adverts, posts or listings on social media, offering tickets at discounted prices or access to events that have already sold out at inflated prices, the bank said. Purchase scams can happen when someone is tricked into sending money via bank transfer to buy goods or services that are fake, shoddy or do not exist. Ticket scams often involve fake adverts, posts or listings on social media, offering tickets or access to sold-out events. Victims are asked to pay up front for the tickets, but once this is done, the scammers disappear. The buyer is left without the tickets and out of pocket.

England jeered after unimpressive win over minnows Andorra

England were booed after limping to a lifeless 1-0 win against Andorra as Thomas Tuchel's first away match in charge ended in forgettable and frustrating fashion. The German coach called for relentlessness and patience against the side 173rd in Fifa's world rankings but got neither as the stuttering Euro 2024 runners-up were jeered at the end of both halves. Advertisement This was the third time England have failed to score a first-half goal against Andorra in Barcelona, where the minnows kept out Steve McClaren's side in 2007 and Fabio Capello's team the following year. A 1-0 win for the #ThreeLions in Barcelona 👊 — England (@England) June 7, 2025 There was a breakthrough shortly after the break in both of those matches, just as there was in Saturday's World Cup qualifier when Harry Kane finally gave the 6,950 travelling fans something to cheer about. England's captain turned in lively Noni Madueke's cross in the 50th minute, yet the goals did not flow from that point and slow play brought further grumbles. Some fans made an early exit and there were more boos at the end of Tuchel's third win in charge. Advertisement The England boss had named an attack-minded line-up at the RCDE Stadium – where the match was held as Andorra's new ground was not quite ready – and saw his side boss 83 per cent of first-half possession. Jude Bellingham went close for England (Bradley Collyer/PA) But the Group K leaders were unable to turn dominance into a first-half opener as well-drilled, defence-minded Andorra held firm on a warm evening in Spain. Jude Bellingham saw a shot saved inside the opening minute and Curtis Jones soon saw an attempt blocked, with Ezri Konsa then denied a penalty despite being wrestled to the ground. Andorra goalkeeper Iker Alvarez looked uncertain at some set-pieces but produced some important stops, with his 14th-minute save from Madueke the most impressive. Advertisement Kane struck wide from close range and Bellingham saw an attempt through a crowd saved but England's play was lacking incision. England's Harry Kane celebrates with teammate Noni Madueke after scoring (Bradley Collyer/PA) Andorra's support whistled for half-time as Bellingham saw a flicked header held in stoppage time, which ended with boos from unimpressed England fans. It was not only the performance that some supporters expressed anger with as Prime Minister Keir Starmer copped some flak at points during the first half. Ricard Fernandez's attempt to score Andorra's first goal against England went well wide early in the second half and the visitors finally broke the deadlock in the 50th minute. Advertisement Jones slipped a ball through for stretching Kane to prod goalwards, with Madueke reacting quickest to Alvarez's save and sending a low ball back across for the skipper to stab home. England goal number 7️⃣2️⃣ for @HKane ⚽️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 — England (@England) June 7, 2025 Madueke was denied before Tuchel turned to Trent Alexander-Arnold and Eberechi Eze. The latter saw a header tipped over by Alvarez, increasing Andorran anticipation when substitute Guillaume Lopez skipped past Dan Burn to see a shot blocked by Konsa. Play petered out as some England fans made an early exit, understandably preferring to get their Saturday night started in Barcelona rather than see through a dreary conclusion. There was a chance at the death but Andorra escaped, England fans letting their annoyance known but later applauding the players. Advertisement

Roy Keane says only one England player impressed in 'boring' Andorra win

Roy Keane believes only one England player emerged with credit from the Three Lions' underwhelming 1-0 win over Andorra in Barcelona. England preserved their perfect start under Thomas Tuchel but there was little more to cheer about after a drab display against the side ranked 173rd in the world. Goalless at half-time, it was Harry Kane who found the game's winning goal, stabbing home Noni Madueke's low cross into the roof of the net to bring up his 450th senior career goal. But it was an otherwise tepid display from the visitors who struggled to break down Andorra's defence and create regular chances in the searing Spanish heat. With just under a year to go until the World Cup, Tuchel is still getting to grips with his England squad ahead of the tournament. But Keane believes that Madueke was the only player who improved his chances of getting on the plane to North America next summer off the back of Saturday's result. 'It was a very mature performance from him,' Keane told ITV post-match. 'We mentioned before the game that he sometimes just has moments but he was a lot better tonight. 'He was consistent, his movement was excellent – coming short and stretching in behind – and he was one of the players who had something to prove and he affected the game. 'He got an assist, he was a threat and that's what you like to see.' On an otherwise forgetful England display, the former Manchester United captain added: 'I thought when they scored the goal, they thought it was job done, and I was really disappointed with England's attitude after the goal went in. 'Particularly in the second half, I didn't think it was great. I felt some players looked like they got bored in the last half and hour and I don't want to see that. 'Your job every game is to impress the manager and I think only he (Madueke) did that tonight. Deep down, Tuchel will be looking at his staff and saying he was disappointed by more than one or two of those players.' Tuchel was equally frustrated by England's performance and insisted that his short time with the squad was no excuse for his side's lack of cutting edge. 'I felt us frustrated and a lack of attitude in the last stages of the game, which I didn't like at all,' he told BBC Radio 5 Live. 'I didn't want to create an atmosphere when we get frustrated easy. I don't know why we lost our momentum or speed. The last half an hour I did not like at all. Everything is a learning. We are smarter than before and we will talk about it honestly and directly and try to do it better. More Trending 'It surprised me because we started well. We created an xG of three and underperformed with one. It just shows we were not precise enough and had a lack of quality in finishing. 'It is our second camp, and we can do much better. That includes me. It always takes two to tango and we need to do better on Tuesday. There are no excuses. 'There was a lack of being aggressive in duels and then it becomes like what we saw and it did not have the quality we wish. There is a lot to do and from there we go.'
