Official: Pelicans acquire additional first-round pick in 2025 NBA draft from Pacers
The New Orleans Pelicans announced on Tuesday that they acquired the No. 23 pick in the 2025 NBA draft from the Indiana Pacers. Shams Charania of ESPN was the first to report the trade.
The Pacers are also sending the Pelicans the draft rights to Mojave King, the 47th overall pick in 2023. They are acquiring their own 2026 first-round pick from the Pelicans, which was previously dealt to the Toronto Raptors in the trade involving Pascal Siakam.
The transaction is expected to provide the Pacers with some salary-cap relief, which will help in their efforts to re-sign center Myles Turner this offseason. They are projected to be approximately $20 million under the luxury tax, according to Bobby Marks of ESPN.
The Pelicans now have the Nos. 7 and 23 picks in the first round of the 2025 NBA draft following the trade. The group finished with a 21-61 record last season and appears to be looking to retool the roster through the draft by adding another selection.
New Orleans has hosted predraft workouts with several potential first-round targets, including Nique Clifford (Colorado State), Cedric Coward (Washington State), Egor Demin (BYU), Kon Knueppel (Duke), Asa Newell (Georgia) and Derik Queen (Maryland), among others.

Chris Finch Addresses Timberwolves Future for Naz Reid and Julius Randle
Chris Finch Addresses Timberwolves Future for Naz Reid and Julius Randle originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Minnesota Timberwolves are contemplating which members of their playoff-ready roster will stay and go for next season. Among the names mentioned in free agency situations and trade rumors are Rudy Gobert, Naz Reid, and Julius Randle. Advertisement Gobert seemed like he might be gone when Kevin Durant trade speculation surfaced, with Minnesota among potential suitors. However, the KD to Timberwolves talk has cooled off slightly with the two-time champion recently indicating he doesn't want to be in Minnesota. Meanwhile, Reid and Randle are two other valuable members of the Wolves' frontcourt, and both are unrestricted free agents. That has fans wondering if they'll remain part of a team that is still on the verge of reaching their first-ever NBA Finals. Timberwolves center Naz Reid (11) could test the market if he opts out of his contract's player Adams-Imagn Images Head coach Chris Finch was also a subject of speculation surrounding his future in Minnesota. Advertisement Despite the New York Knicks' interest in him, BetRivers podcast host Mike Francesa reported last week that the Wolves denied New York permission to speak to him. More recently, Finch appeared on The Paul Allen Show for KFAN Sports Radio FM 100.3 and spoke about Reid and Randle's futures with the team. "Absolutely, yes," Finch said when asked if they'd be in Timberwolves jerseys next season. 'I think both players want to be there, first and foremost the most important thing. We certainly want them there and I know Tim Connelly is working hard to make sure that they get some sort of deals done that make them happy,' Finch told Allen. Advertisement Reid, a former Sixth Man of the Year, averaged 14.2 points, six rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game this past season. According to ESPN, he ranked as one of the top two reserves for the past two postseasons. He's expected to decline his $15 million player option to get a better multi-year contract. Along with the Wolves, ESPN indicated that the Detroit Pistons could be a good fit for Reid to sign with in free agency. Randle averaged 18.7 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game with 48.5 percent field goal shooting in his first season in Minnesota. He has a four-year, $117 million contract, including a player option for next season worth $30.9 million. He can choose to opt in and stay with the Timberwolves, or enter free agency. As of this writing, ESPN believes his current squad is the best fit for him. Stephen A. Smith Accuses Major U.S. City Of Being Unsafe
Stephen A. Smith Accuses Major U.S. City Of Being Unsafe originally appeared on The Spun. For the third time in just the past week, ESPN's Stephen A. Smith has gone viral in the NBA community. Roughly a week ago, Smith made headlines for calling out Tyrese Haliburton. This came after the Indiana Pacers defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 3 of the NBA Finals. By the time Game 4 came around, Smith received criticism for playing solitaire on his phone while at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Advertisement Fast forward to this Tuesday, and Smith is receiving pushback for suggesting an NBA city is unsafe for players. He made this comment during a "First Take" segment about Ja Morant's future with the Memphis Grizzlies. Smith claims NBA players have told him they don't feel safe in Memphis. "The people in Memphis, it's a great sports town, great fans, great people, but there's an element there where cats like Jimmy Butler and others don't feel like it's the safest environment," Smith said. "I'm talking to the local authorities in Memphis. You've got to clean some of that stuff up because it's dissuasive to NBA players. They have talked about it. I know, they've told me. That's all I'm saying." LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - FEBRUARY 08: Sports television personality Stephen A. Smith is seen on Radio Row ahead of Super Bowl LVIII at the Mandalay Bay Convention Centeron February 08, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by)It's certainly possible players shared that information with Smith, we know for sure that Morant isn't one of his sources. Advertisement Earlier this afternoon, Morant called out Smith for dissing Memphis on national television. "Talkin bout the grizz more than the finals wit these [cap emoji] ahh sources," Morant wrote on X. "Instead of focusing on the performances we seen from jdub/shai , tj/siakam, how this series is going. we say sumn negative about a city/team on a national level." Smith has not yet replied to Morant's comments. Perhaps he's saving his response for Wednesday's episode of "First Take." Related: Stephen A. Sports Fans 'Done' With ESPN's Stephen A. Smith
Sports Fans 'Done' With ESPN's Stephen A. Smith originally appeared on The Spun. ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith was once considered a fan favorite in the NBA world. However, fans have grown tired of his antics. Advertisement During the 2024-25 NBA season, Smith received plenty of backlash for his feud with LeBron James. It went from a one-time altercation to him taking shots about the four-time NBA champion's character. He even suggested that James missed the legendary Kobe Bryant's memorial service. Just a few days ago, Smith took aim at Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton. His comments were in response to Haliburton calling out media critics. "In case he was talking about me, my brother, I'm not going away," Smith said. "I'm gonna be here for a while. So next year, and the year after that… I'm going to be here, and players far more accomplished and far more superior have made their efforts trying to call me out. How has that worked out?" Apparently, Smith's latest rival is none other than Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant. Advertisement On Tuesday's episode of "First Take," Smith suggested that NBA players don't feel safe in Memphis. (Photo by)Morant wasted no time firing back at Smith. "Talkin bout the grizz more than the finals wit these [cap emoji] ahh sources," Morant wrote on X. "Instead of focusing on the performances we seen from jdub/shai , tj/siakam, how this series is going. we say sumn negative about a city/team on a national level." Advertisement Unsurprisingly, Smith clapped back at Morant on Tuesday night. "So this is what we're doing now @JaMorant? I recall talking about the Finals. But the @memgrizz made news because of Bane getting traded. AND, your possible extension coming up. Would you prefer I go into detail about WTH has been going on in Memphis? Why players have stated they're not interested in going? Or even MORE details? Or would you like me to leave well enough alone, and let the great peeps of Memphis address it on their own? Your call! I'm all ears," Smith replied. BROOKLYN, NY - JUNE 26: Steven A Smith looks on during the 2024 NBA Draft - Round One on June 26, 2024 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. (Photo by Kostas Lymperopoulos/NBAE via Getty Images)After reading that response, NBA fans came to the conclusion that Smith simply loves being at the center of drama. Advertisement "This man lives for any type of drama/beef that he can find," an NBA fan commented. "You are just out of pocket," a second fan said. "You're making it personal." "This dude thinks he's part of the mob or something," a social media user wrote. "Threatening people cause they say something about him. He's a loser and a failure of a man. No matter how much money you have made, you are a loser and a failure." "You're the worst bro and I used to love you so much you was my hero as a commentator but the way you attack young black players bothers me so much bro I wish you would stop," another fan tweeted. Advertisement "He didn't even say your name man lol," a fan asked. "What's goin on with you?" There's no chance Smith will be disciplined by ESPN for his social media posts. We're talking about a personality who recently signed a five-year, $100 million contract extension. If anything, Smith will feel empowered to keep butting heads with NBA players. Related: Stephen A.
