How to spend the weekend in Portugal's wine-loving second city
Today, it is a city which draws millions of visitors to its granite streets, its glossy blue and white tiled facades, soaring church towers, design-savvy hotels and acclaimed restaurants.
Porto residents also know how to have a good time, especially in June for the feast day of St John the Baptist, the city's patron saint. Celebrations last all night under a sky illuminated by fireworks, followed the next day by a regatta, when wooden rabelos race down the Douro River. Year-round, this same sense of rich tradition and heritage are woven through daily life in Porto – here's how to spend a weekend in this vibrant city.

How to spend your weekend
Day one: morning
'In Braga they pray, in Coimbra they study, in Porto they work and in Lisbon they play' goes the old Portuguese saying. But first coffee. Locals normally start the day with a bica (espresso) and a pastel de nata (custard tart), and there are still several cafés in town which date back to the beginning of the 1900s when coffee, sourced via Brazil, was introduced here. Café Majestic is one, long considered a venue for writers and intellectuals with lovely art nouveau interiors. Or visit Café A Braziliera, the first place to serve coffee to drink on the premises, still with an old sign reading 'please don't spit on the floor' – an indication of its initial reception. Also worth a mention is Café Guarany, once frequented by musicians. It sits on beautiful Aliados Avenue, the perfect place to start the day.

Former major winner Ernie Els is set to host groundbreaking new PGA Tour Champions event in Portugal that has a jaw-dropping $3m prize purse
In a groundbreaking new announcement, four-time major champion Ernie Els is set to host a brand new PGA Tour Champions event, The Portugal Invitational, in 2026. The tournament will mark the first time a PGA Tour-sanctioned individual stroke play event will be hosted in the European country, and will arrive at the South African's newly refurbished Els Club during the week of July 27. The Els Club, which is located in Vilamoura, is set to welcome a field of 78 players, including World Golf Hall of Fame stars and PGA Champions Tour members. Through the Tour's strategic alliance with the DP World Tour, members from the Legends Tour will also be invited to participate. They will all compete for a jaw-dropping prize purse of £2.23million ($3m) across this stunning track, with golfing legends Bernhard Langer and Miguel Ángel Jimenez both speaking of their excitement at the news. All three rounds of the event will be televised on the GOLF Channel, with the Portugal Invitational set to be sandwiched between the ISPS Handa Senior Open and the Staysure Senior PGA Championship on the Legends Tour, culminating in what is set to be a simply outstanding showing of golf in Europe. The PGA Tour Champions, Arrow Global Group and Turismo de Portugal de Algarve have joined forces to bring this event to European shores, with the group announcing a five-year strategic partnership to host Tour Champions events in Portugal. 'We are thrilled to partner with Arrow Global Group, Turismo de Portugal, Turismo de Algarve and Ernie Els to announce this exciting, first-of-its-kind PGA TOUR Champions event in Portugal,' PGA TOUR Champions President, Miller Brady, said. 'This Tour is a global showcase of the game's legendary players, and we know the great golf fans in Portugal and throughout Europe will welcome the opportunity to watch them compete in person at The Els Club Vilamoura.' Portugal is one of the greatest places to play golf in Europe, but at present, only the Hotel Planner Tour will visit the European country in 2025, for the Open de Portugal at the Royal Obidos Spa and Golf Resort, in Vau Obidos. Els, who won The Open in 1994 and 1997 and the US Open in 2002 and 2012, is currently leading some exciting and innovative renovation works on the course, which was formerly known as the Victoria Course. This illustrious track had previously hosted the Portugal Masters between 2007 and 2022. Padraig Harrington, Lee Westwood and Shane Lowry have won at this venue in the past. The South African, who has led renovation works at some of the world's most iconic golf courses, including Wentworth's West Course, spoke of his excitement over the renovations, with the Els Club in Vilamoura set to open in 2025. 'Whenever our firm designs a golf course, we always have an eye on what makes it a successful tournament venue, so this was always a big part of our plans for The Els Club Vilamoura,' Els said, speaking on the huge announcement. 'It's wonderful to see those plans now coming to fruition and we're grateful to PGA TOUR Champions President Miller Brady, the team at Arrow Global Group and Turismo de Portugal and Turismo de Algarve, for sharing in our vision and bringing this exciting new tournament here. 'Working with Arrow Global and everyone at Vilamoura has been an absolute pleasure these past few years; they had a clear vision and mission from the get-go, which allowed us to focus our efforts on creating the very best golf course that we could. We're very proud of this course; it looks incredible. 'There are a lot of great holes, a lot of memorable holes, and overall, it's a really well-balanced test of golf. The practice facilities here are world-class, too. Everything about The Els Club Vilamoura makes it the ideal tournament venue. The players are going to love it, not just the golf course but this whole destination. It's such a beautiful part of the world.' The Algarve is one of the most famous destinations in the world for golf, with approximately 1.5billion rounds played annually. And according to John Calvao, Fund Principal at Arrow Global Group, the addition of the Portugal Invitational to the PGA Tour Champions Schedule signifies a huge leap in bringing some of the greatest players of the game to Portugal's shores. 'This announcement signifies the convergence of several heavyweights in the game of golf; the renowned golf destination of the Algarve, the might of Ernie Els' design, and the legendary golfers who will compete on these fairways,' Calvao said. 'For Arrow Global, this is a major step in realizing our vision for Portugal as one of the best global golf and lifestyle destinations, and we believe this tournament will showcase the world-class quality of the course and the strength of our long-term commitment to the region.' Aside from upgrades to the golf course, Arrow Global Group are investing in Vilamoura as a region, adding multiple hotels while also announcing their intention to build a beach club. 'We've made a significant investment in the destination, elevating it with world-class hotels, a completely renovated marina, upgraded golf courses, and a high-end equestrian center. We're also further developing high-quality real estate that reflects the lifestyle our guests and residents seek. Soon, we'll be adding a country club and a beach club, making this a destination that truly has everything for families and all generations to enjoy.' Andre Gomes, President of the Algarve Tourism Board noted the significance of this announcement. 'Hosting the Portugal Invitational in Vilamoura is a historic milestone for the Algarve and for Portugal. This partnership with PGA TOUR Champions further raises our destination's international profile and confirms the Algarve as an essential reference point in European golf,' Gomes said. 'The Els Club Vilamoura, now the venue for an event of this magnitude, reflects our commitment to combining quality, sustainability and reputation with a distinctive tourist offering capable of attracting elite competitions. 'The Algarve has been Portugal's leading golf destination for decades, with around 1.5 million rounds played annually, and continues to invest in a diverse, contemporary and environmentally responsible offering. This tournament raises the bar and reflects the regional ambition to establish the Algarve as a year-round tourist destination, with a direct impact on the economy, employment and promotion of the region. We are ready to welcome the big names in golf history and show the world everything the Algarve has to offer — on and off the course.'

'Danger to life' warning issued as two deadly diseases detected at popular holiday destination
A health alert has been issued for British tourists travelling to a popular European destination this summer as two potentially fatal diseases have been detected. In Italy, health authorities have reported the first locally acquired cases of both dengue and chikungunya, mosquito-borne viruses that are typically found in tropical regions like South America and India. Both were previously considered primarily imported diseases, found in individuals who had contracted them abroad. However, the two new cases indicate that the viruses were caught within the country, according to the Foreign Office-backed Travel Health Pro. Dengue fever cases have seen a significant rise globally, reaching a record high in 2024 with over 14 million reported cases, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. In June of this year, Australian holidaymakers were issued a warning after The Cook Islands, a nation in the South Pacific, declared the most recent outbreak of the disease after 19 cases, including two active cases, were recorded. Case counts have also been increasing in Samoa, Tonga, French Polynesia, Fiji and Kiribati. In July, Italy reported the first locally acquired case of dengue for the year, specifically in the Emilia Romagna region, while 82 imported cases of the virus were recorded in several regions. Italian health officials also reported the first locally acquired case of Chikungunya for the year, again found in the Emilia-Romagna region. An additional 50 imported cases of the virus were recorded across a number of regions. Earlier this month, holidaymakers jetting off to France were warned they were at risk of contracting chikungunya after eight local cases were recorded. The chikungunya outbreak has occurred far earlier in the year than is typical, and this could indicate the mosquitoes that carry chikungunya are becoming increasingly at home in France thanks to climate change, the warning said. Though not fatal, chikungunya can cause a range of effects, which are primarily marked by a sudden onset of fever and severe joint pain, while other common symptoms include muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue, and rash. While the acute phase of the illness usually resolves within a week or two, the joint pain can persist for weeks, months, or even years in some individuals. Meanwhile, dengue fever can cause a range of effects, including mild flu-like symptoms such as headache, fever and joint pain. However, in some cases, infections can progress to severe dengue, which can cause potentially life-threatening complications such as internal bleeding and organ damage, and death. Holidaymakers are urged to contact a local health professional immediately if they suspect they have been bitten by a mosquito during their travels. It comes as Hawaii health officials are asking visitors to ensure they are vaccinated against whooping cough as cases reach an all-time high in the state. Earlier this week, the state's Department of Health reported 108 cases of the Victorian-era disease — dubbed the 100-day cough — a stark increase from last year's 84 total cases. According to data from the CDC, about 10,000 cases of the coughing malady and nearly a dozen deaths have already been reported across the country this year.

Here come the WAGs... and HABs! Lionesses partners and fans flock to Switzerland ahead of Euro semi-final against Italy - with one star's boyfriend getting on the Wetherspoons pints before takeoff
The partners of England 's Lionesses have been spotted flying out to Switzerland ahead of their Euro 2025 semi-final against Italy on Tuesday night. That included one England star's other half taking the opportunity to indulge in a pre-take off pint at a JD Wetherspoon pub in Terminal 2 of Manchester Airport. It saw professional footballer Joe Bunney, who plays for non-league side Stalybridge Celtic post a picture of a Moretti lager before he flew out to support Manchester United forward Ella Toone. He will be preparing to watch the match with a host of the team's other partners, some of whom are already in Switzerland. One of the most notable inclusions on that list is Manchester City and Netherlands forward Vivianne Miedema, who is in a relationship with England star Beth Mead. The pair - who have been in a relationship with one another since 2022 - faced off in the group stages of the tournament as Sarina Wiegman 's Lionesses beat the Netherlands 4-0. Netherlands forward Vivianne Miedema has stayed in Switzerland to support her partner Beth Mead, with the pair previously playing together for Arsenal Despite Miedema's side failing to qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament, she has opted to stay in Switzerland to support Mead. Meanwhile, Ashley Hudson, who is currently dating Lauren Hemp, posted a snap to her Instagram story on Monday of the Uetliberg mountain, which overlooks the city of Zurich. Hudson, 30, retired from professional footballer in 2024 having spent nine years at Liverpool before finishing her career with spells at Birmingham City and Sheffield United before stepping away from the sport. While their attendances have not been confirmed, ex-Sheffield United defender Jack O'Connell and professional cyclist Tao Geoghegan Hart could also be present. O'Connell is the sweetheart of another Man City star in Alex Greenwood, with the pair having met while attending sixth-form college in Bootle, Merseyside. Geoghegan Hart is dating another another Arsenal star in Lotte Wubben-Moy, who has spent her entire senior career with the Gunners. Elsewhere, England supporters have travelled in their thousands to urge the Lionesses onto what would be a third final appearance at a major tournament in a row should they beat Italy. Fans were seen congregating in Geneva ahead of the encounter, many of whom appeared to be in buoyant spirits prior to kick-off. England's march to the semi-finals of Euro 2025 caps a remarkable turnaround in their fortunes after they lost their opening match of the tournament to France. They are hopeful of seeing England progress to a third final appearance at a major tournament in a row Following that 2-1 defeat, England could have suffered the humble fate of exiting at the group stages had they lost to the Netherlands - only to respond in resounding fashion. Despite making it to the knockout stages, they looked to be heading out at the expense of Sweden after falling 2-0 behind after just 25 minutes. However, two goals in three minutes from Lucy Bronze and Michelle Agyemang helped take the game to extra-time. After that period remained goalless, a nerve-shredding penalty shootout ended with England progressing when Lucy Bronze converted their seventh penalty. Should they beat Italy, it would mark the third time in a row they have reached a final. having done so at Euro 2022 and the 2023 World Cup. While they were victorious over Germany to win their first-ever international trophy at the last Euros, the Lionesses suffered World Cup heartache a year later as they were beaten in the final by Spain.
