DETROIT (AP) — Kerry Carpenter homered and drove in three runs to help the Detroit Tigers beat the Los Angeles Angels 9-5 on Sunday.
Carpenter doubled and scored in the first, hit a sacrifice fly in the second and added a three-run homer in the fourth.
Casey Mize (11-4) got the win, allowing two runs on three hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out five.
Jack Kochanowicz (3-10) took the loss. He gave up seven runs on 10 hits in three-plus innings.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the first, stringing together four straight two-out hits that included RBI singles by Riley Greene and Zach McKinstry.
Carpenter's sacrifice fly made it 3-0 in the second, and the Tigers added four more in the fourth.
Javier Baez reached on an error, took third on a base hit by Cole Keith and scored on Gleyber Torres' single. Carpenter followed with his 21st homer, giving Detroit a 7-0 lead.
Nolan Schanuel hit a two-run homer in the fifth, and Logan O'Hoppe made it 7-3 with an RBI single in the sixth.
Greene hit a two-run homer in the sixth while Luis Rengifo hit a two-run shot in the eighth.

Key stat
Carpenter has a .600 slugging percentage against right-handed pitchers since the start of 2024, the third highest in the majors. Shohei Ohtani (.688) and Aaron Judge (.682) are the leaders among players with at least 500 plate appearances against righties.
Up next
The Angels return for a three-game series with their crosstown rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers. RHP Jose Soriano is scheduled to start Monday's opener.
Detroit travels to Chicago for three games against the White Sox. RHP Chris Paddack (4-10, 4.91) will pitch on Monday evening. After playing 13 of their last 16 games at home, the Tigers play 13 of the next 19 on the road.

Media day: QB Carlos Herrera of Van Nuys is grateful he discovered football

Players from six Valley League football schools came to Granada Hills Kennedy High on Monday for a media day, and you can say without any doubts that Van Nuys senior quarterback Carlos Herrera has been changed by his experiences. When he decided to try football for the first time as a freshman, he said he knew little about the sport such as putting on shoulder pads. By last season, he was the City Section Division III offensive player of the year after passing for 2,158 yards and 23 touchdowns and running for 807 yards and 12 touchdowns. 'It never crossed my mind,' he said of his football success. 'It's changed my life physically and mentally. It helps me mentally. When I go into the real world, nothing will be as tough a challenge.' Defending league champion Kennedy has the Montes cousins, quarterback Diego Montes and defensive lineman James Montes. Diego has a 4.6 grade point-average, made All-City and is known for his versatility. 'Every time I try to sack him, he runs away,' James said. Kennedy lineman Lazara Barajas has made big changes physically. Last season he weighed 298 pounds. Now he's 262 pounds after he stopped eating chips and used better cardio techniques to drop weight. First-year Reseda coach Ed Breceda, who graduated from the school in 2006 and was an assistant coach under former head coach Alonso Arreola, is going back even further, bringing back smash-mouth football from the days of coach Joel Schaeffer. He brought three running backs to the media day — Innis Marquez, Erick Figueroa and Jonathan Orantes. Many of Reseda's players are enrolled in the school's police magnet program. Orantes also is part of the school's cheer team. Canoga Park coach Lucius Mills has spent months trying to convince one of his school's top soccer players, Gabriel Trigueros Estrada, to join the football team. He finally arrived this summer and is showing promise as a senior safety with no football experience. Mills is hoping if Estrada has a good experience, other soccer players will follow in future years. San Fernando coach Charles Burnley played for the Tigers and is always reminding his players about their strong football tradition. San Fernando produced a Heisman Trophy winner, Charles White. The Tigers have been strengthened by two transfers from Heritage Christian, quarterback Julian Zarzo and running back Brandon Marshall. But the player to watch could be 6-foot-4, 290-pound junior tackle Paul Villegas. Only 16 years old and part Samoan, he's gaining physicality and adding strength. And what about his eating skills? 'What didn't I eat,' he said. San Fernando plays Sylmar at the Coliseum on Oct. 17. Brothers Rayleo and Elizeo Reyes are key players for Sylmar as defensive backs. Never doubt their toughness, for Rayleo is a 5-6, 150-pound senior and Elizeo is a 5-5, 149-pound junior. 'We like to fly around and hit people,' Rayleo said. Both can't wait to play at the Coliseum. 'I've always been a USC fan,' Elizeo said. 'It's a dream come true.' Panorama is excited about sophomore safety Brandon Hernandez, who ended up starting as a 14-year-old freshman last season. Asked how do you get someone so young ready to play on varsity, coach Adrian Beltran said, 'You make them be best friends with the linemen. He hung out with them at lunch, after school.'

Tigers get positive update on Alex Bregman's free agent status

Tigers get positive update on Alex Bregman's free agent status originally appeared on The Sporting News The Detroit Tigers were linked to Boston Red Sox All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman at the trade deadline. While the Red Sox were hot and were far from sellers, the Tigers' interest in Bregman was enough to monitor them come the offseason. If Detroit is looking to bolster the offense and is still interested in Bregman, they will have to hope he opts out of his $40 million 2026 player option. According to R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports, Bregman could hit the open market. "Bregman will presumably take advantage after a season that has him on pace to set new career-high marks in both pulled fly ball rate and hard-hit percentage (up nearly seven percentage points from last year) -- if only to land a longer term." Anderson writes. If the Tigers can join the Bregman free agent sweepstakes, then a potential deal is well within the cards for Detroit. They need a new third baseman, and Bregman would be an incredible pickup for such a role. Bregman hitting free agency would mean he's turning down $40 million per season to look for a longer-term deal. Detroit would have to make a massive commitment to Bregman, but the Tigers, with a lot of young prospects coming up through the system, have the financial leeway to swing such a huge deal. MORE: Tigers lost out to Mets on trade for Cardinals' Ryan Helsley While the ownership group could decide not to spend big, if they do, Bregman is likely one of the options they could use their money on. As Anderson mentioned, Bregman is setting new career highs in two key statistics. Those two, while not as prominent as OPS or batting average, indicate that not only is Bregman hitting the ball as hard as he's done in his career, but he's also pulling the ball. The two combine to create an environment for more home runs from Bregman. Even though Bregman is 31 years old, the Tigers should be willing to spend a fortune on Bregman in the offseason. He'd dramatically improve the Tigers' offense, and this article from Anderson opens the door to Bregman hitting free agency. After a lackluster trade deadline, the Tigers front office, led by Scott Harris, could get back in the good graces of the Tigers fandom by signing Bregman in the offseason. It'll cost a lot, but Bregman would be a huge boost to the offense, while shoring up the third base spot for the years to come. Twins reinstate Byron Buxton from injured list to start series vs. Yankees

NEW YORK (AP) — The Minnesota Twins reinstated center fielder Byron Buxton from the 10-day injured list on Monday before beginning a three-game series against the New York Yankees, after the All-Star missed 13 games with inflammation in his left rib cage. Buxton was sidelined just before the Twins tore down their roster leading to the trade deadline. He was batting .282 with 68 runs, 23 homers, 59 RBIs and a .905 OPS in 85 games when he went on the IL, all team-leading totals and averages among players with a qualifying amount of at-bats. The Twins sent outfielder Carson McCusker to Triple-A St. Paul to make room for Buxton, who also has stolen 17 bases in 17 attempts. Despite the rib cage issue and a concussion that cost him time earlier, Buxton has been as healthy as he has in several seasons. He's on pace for the second-most games in his 11-year major league career, behind the 140 games he played in in 2017. ___ AP MLB: The Associated Press
