6 summer outfits to wear with espadrilles, the Royal-approved sandal that's a seasonal staple

Cosmopolitana day ago

Espadrilles have been a staple in my summer wardrobe for as long as I can remember. Though there are some style differences, the classics feature a closed-toe and an often neutral colourway. They're subtly chic, with a wrap-around ankle-tie providing a small dose of interest.
Plus, sitting on a stacked woven wedge heel, they're undeniably comfortable. No wonder the likes of Emily Ratajkowski, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Alexa Chung, Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton are all fans.
All in all, they're the most inoffensive sandal trend around (yes, 'ugly shoe' trend, I'm referring to you). But while I appreciate an espadrille's reliability and simplicity, some members of the Cosmo Fashion Team find them predictable, shunning them for these exact same reasons.
Well, I'm here to tell you the humble espadrille wedge has had a makeover in 2025. Featuring pretty embroidery, velvet straps in contrasting hues and sculptural silhouettes, they're shaking off their boring connotations and emerging as our go-to shoe this summer for all the events on our calendar. From pub drinks with friends to providing the finishing touch to our summer wedding guest dresses, the 2025 espadrille is cooler, more stylish – but (crucially) just as comfy as the classics.
As for what summer outfits we'll be wearing with our espadrille wedges, keep reading for styling inspiration and a sneak peek at the sandals that have caught my eye and earned a spot on my wishlist.
What shoes do you wear with a bright tangerine summer dress? Black is too heavy, white is too dated, any other colour could aggressively clash, but an equally zesty orange hue – paired with the neutral woven sole so as not to overwhelm – is just right.
Espadrilles are perhaps the ultimate wedding guest shoe – formal enough to go with your dress, but comfy enough to have you on the dance floor all night long. We love the idea of pairing a floral dress with espadrilles featuring floral embroidery. Don't worry about matching the flower motifs perfectly as long as your dress and shoes have shared colours in their designs.
Wide-leg jeans sometimes require a little height to help balance out the proportions of extra fabric and ensure the most flattering of fits, but who wants to wear heels out and about? Enter: the espadrille wedge, ideal for weekends spent standing in pub gardens.
Not a lover of colour? No shade, some of us just prefer to stick to a wardrobe of minimal black, white and neutral colourways. But, if you do want to add just a little colour pop to an outfit, a bright, statement pair of shoes is an easy way to do so. We love these Penelope Chilvers wedges that feature velvet ribbons woven through the shoe in a slightly different shade of pink for even more colour, while still feeling subtle.
Falling into the same category as linen trousers, Bermuda shorts are the fashion set's favourite summer shorts thanks to their versatility and comfort. Fitting, then, that they pair perfectly with espadrilles. Add this look to your summer workwear rotation and prepare to be crowned best-dressed employee. I *love* how Castañer have toughened up the shoe with a black leather upper. So cool.
AKA Kate Middleton's tried and tested go-to outfit formula. You know what they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Well, if it's good enough for the Princess of Wales all these years later, we're taking that as a green light to wear this look in 2025.

Summer Outfits So Chic, You'll Want to Copy Them All

Don't look now, but summer is here, which means the time has come to showcase your hot-weather style with some fresh 'fits. Whether you plan to hit the beach with your crew or stay in with the A/C blasting, there's no reason you can't do it wearing something cute. If inspiration is lacking, you're in luck, I found the best casual summer outfit ideas out there, inspired by major celebrities like Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner and street style mavens alike. Stick to basics with an airy sundress and summer sandals or perhaps—if you're feeling newly inspired by the NBA playoffs—opt for something sporty like a summer tracksuit and heels. At the end of the day, a cute outfit can make all the difference (at least, that's what I believe!). Check out the stylish summer outfits you can all season long, below. When in doubt, you can never go wrong with a pair of jeans and a baby tee. Take notes from Kendall Jenner, who accessorized this classic combo with loafers and a baseball cap for an effortlessly cool and casual look you can wear on repeat. Jean shorts and summer just go together, and what better time to wear your favorites? Throw on your trusty Adidas Sambas, like Hailey Bieber, and your go-to denim jacket for when the temps start to dip, and you're set. Take a page from Bella Hadid and tap into the Western trend. Center your outfit around a pair of chic cowboy boots, and then style them with a fun graphic tee and cutoff shorts. You'll have a trend-worthy outfit ready in no time. Don't feel obligated to dress up if you're planning to lay low this summer. Sometimes, a sweatshirt and comfy sweatpants are the move. A monochromatic look like this one from Jennifer Lopez still looks put-together and elevated, even when you're in a loungewear set. I anticipate no regrets. An all-black ensemble is perfect for any occasion, including a barbecue or picnic. A romantic dress and ballet flats paired with a dainty necklace come together for an ensemble fit for a daytime outing. Feeling like a woman on the move? A lightweight tracksuit is just what's in order. And if you want to give it a fashion-girl twist, style it with this season's trending aviator sunglasses and a pair of metallic sandals. Sports jerseys are trending for summer—and if you're looking for an unexpected way to style yours, consider a cute bubble skirt. Spice things up with metallic accessories, and I guarantee you'll be primed for a post on the grid. For something that feels casual but still elevated, consider a fitted cardigan paired with Bermuda shorts. Polished details like ballet flats and a leather designer bag will take things up a level. Nothing beats the heat quite like a sundress, which makes it a great option for your summer uniform. It's easy, effortless, and chic—not to mention versatile. Wear it to dinner alfresco or for your neighborhood barbecue. This is a staple that can be as dressed up or down as you want it. No doubt, a long black skirt is the most underrated MVP of your everyday wardrobe. For a go-to look, you can wear again and again, opt for a denim jacket, a classic white T-shirt, and easy flats (like the ones shown here, in the ever-popular butter yellow hue). It's a classy and casual look that'll work for nearly any summer occasion.

9 Vacation-Ready Looks for a Chic Summer in Italy

Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy. There's no place quite like Italy in the summertime. And while the sun-soaked coasts are must-visits, the cities are just as magical to make the centerpiece of your next getaway. Whether you're strolling down the cobblestone streets of Rome or sipping an espresso in Florence, every scenario spent in Italy deserves a stylish ensemble. From great denim to elegant day dresses, what to wear in Italy this summer is made easy thanks to the street style scene, who, at last season's Milan Fashion Week, showed up and out in arguably their chicest (and most recreatable!) looks yet. When jetting off to Italy, pack pieces that are polished yet still practical. Lightweight, breathable silhouettes are ideal for navigating warm days spent seeing the sights–think flowy white dresses, oversized button-up shirts, slinky slip skirts, and more. According to one Milanese editor outside the Jil Sander fall/winter 2025 show, the latter looks especially chic accessorized with a sleek rope sandal and woven leather shoulder bag. Otherwise, continue to lean into elevated basics with a fashionable twist, such as colorful suiting, sheer midi skirts, and a raffia accessory (or two!). One attendee's look captured this ethos perfectly by way of a sumptuous suede jacket (a city like Milan is known for having evenings on the cooler side) and a Miuccia Prada-approved boat shoe. Speaking of fabulous footwear finds, you'll want to ensure you pack a heeled sandal for a festive night's out, as well as a comfortable, yet chic pair of flats best suited for long hours on foot. You never know when aperitivo hour could be called! Below, here's what to wear in Italy–or really anywhere this summer–according to the street style scene. The gist? It's all about effortless elegance with just a touch of trend. Last season, no one could deny the suede blazer's total fashion domination on and off the runways. This summer, the trend is back and better than ever with all eyes on this sumptuous collared jacket from COS. Styling-wise, take a cue from this Milanese darling and wear yours with a white denim mini skirt, a plain but perfect white tee, and a preppy pair of boat shoes. Summer-forward accessories, such as a woven leather handbag and pearl necklace, are a festive final touch. Thanks to Chemena Kamali at Chloé, the boho blouse continues to be the season's hottest commodity. And clearly, this industry insider agrees. During Milan Fashion Week last September, she sported hers with a long-line denim Bermuda short and, for some welcome height, she slipped into a pair of heeled black sandals. The result? What to wear in Italy for daytime, as well as for elegant nights out. Per this Milanese editor, styling a silky slip skirt with a crisp blue button-up achieves the ideal blend of structure and softness—and finished with a pair of woven rope sandals for that touch of Amalfi Coast charm. La dolce vita never looked so chic. Elegant white dresses have made their mark on the spring runways as of late with brands like Bottega Veneta and Toteme standing behind the LWD. On your next Italian getaway, follow suit and slip into a breezy shirtdress with a colorful summer tote for that perfect pop of color. Not only does this chic combination work for casual daytime excursions but dressed up with a heeled sandal and sculptural jewelry, it's perfect for a night out as well. Navigate certain temperature changes in style by layering a lace-trimmed slip dress underneath a checkered, menswear-inspired blazer. Then, up the duo's fashion game with a mesh ballet flat—preferably this coveted pair from Alaïa. Effortless layers and timeless textures—this is how the fashion crowd does vacation chic with a twist. Now, you too! Take it from this industry insider: A pastel green suit brings fresh tailoring to the piazza, balanced by the delicate charm of crochet ballet flats. The finishing touch? A playful, festive handbag to match that dose of vacation whimsy—because bold color and confidence go hand in hand. A two-toned tank dress is a must-pack in your carry-on this summer—both modern and minimal—while heeled thong sandals add just the right amount of lift. Finish this look off like this showgoer with sleek silver jewelry and a chestnut-colored clutch. Channel your inner Jane Birkin–yes, even in Italy–with a straw basket bag, an easy pair of blue denim, and a preppy cardigan. Whether you're hopping a train to your next destination or perusing the shops, this look embodies that casual coolness we all strive for, whether on vacation or not. According to this chic attendee, mastering the art of masculine and feminine dressing is all about an oversized white button-up shirt paired with a sheer black midi skirt. Otherwise, turn to a structured leather handbag and some dainty jewels for even more subtle refinement. Wear this look straight from the sights to aperitivo hour. Andiamo!
