His Majesty King Abdullah II and Canada Prime Minister Mark Carney on Monday discussed ways to enhance the partnership between Jordan and Canada, as well as the latest developments in the region.
During a meeting in Ottawa, the first with Prime Minister Carney since he took office, His Majesty emphasised the deep-rooted ties between the two countries, noting that Jordan looks forward to continuing to work together with Canada to build on these relations.
The King expressed appreciation for Canada's support to Jordan's development, stressing the importance of expanding joint cooperation in areas such as trade, education, and healthcare.
The meeting also touched on opportunities to enhance investment cooperation, in order to boost the economies of both countries.
His Majesty noted Canada's vital role as Jordan's partner in promoting peace and stability in the region, and commended its support for humanitarian efforts in Gaza.
The two leaders stressed the need to exert maximum efforts to stop the war on Gaza and ensure the uninterrupted flow of relief, humanitarian, and medical aid to civilians across the strip, which is witnessing tragic conditions.
The King also called for an end to the dangerous escalations in the West Bank and other parts of the region, stressing that respecting the sovereignty of states is a prerequisite for creating a political horizon that paves the way for peace and stability in the entire region.
His Majesty reiterated Jordan's support for Syria's security, stability, and territorial integrity, and its right to maintain its sovereignty and the safety of its citizens.
For his part, Prime Minister Carney welcomed the King, praising the ties between the two countries and Jordan's efforts, under the leadership of His Majesty, to stabilise the region.
Prime Minister Carney also announced Canada's allocation of USD28.4 million to support Jordan in the development, education, health and job creation sectors, in addition to the defence and security sectors to enhance Jordan's ability to combat terrorism and cross-border crimes.
The King stressed the need to step up international efforts to support the legitimate rights of Palestinians, reiterating that the two-state solution is the only way to achieve just and comprehensive peace.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Director of the Office of His Majesty Alaa Batayneh, Jordan's Ambassador to Canada Sabah Al Rafie, and Canadian officials attended the meeting.

'I'm afraid to go home': Website exposes Canadians serving in 'Israeli' military

A website, has ignited a heated controversy in Canada by compiling and publishing publicly available information on Canadians who have served in the 'Israeli' military. This project defines 'Canadian' as someone who is a Canadian citizen, and/or has lived in Canada for a significant amount of time, and/or currently lives in Canada. Launched on February 24, 2024, by The Maple, an online publication with a pro-Palestinian and anti-'Israel' stance, the site claims its purpose is to help readers understand the motivations of Canadians joining the 'Israeli' military by aggregating details from public sources . Davide Mastracci, The Maple's opinion editor, has publicly accused 'Israel' of planned genocide in Gaza. However, the initiative has been met with strong accusations of "doxxing" from those listed and their families, who view the compilation as an act of intimidation. Globally, there's a growing trend of legal complaints targeting 'Israeli' soldiers based heavily on open-source material, leading the 'Israeli' military to reportedly no longer allow soldiers to be identified by name. Legal Ambiguity of "Doxxing" A key point of contention is Canada's legal landscape. "Doxxing" itself is not a defined criminal offense in Canada . While the act of publishing private information for harassment is widely condemned, legal experts note that proving intent to harm is an "uphill battle" for potential lawsuits. Mastracci asserts that every profile is "based entirely on public information gathered through simple Google searches from news articles, social media profiles, newsletters, websites, public directories and other sources," with each claim hyperlinked to its original public source. He emphasizes that the information's origin lies with the soldiers themselves, their family members, or media outlets where they "willingly shared their status as a soldier". The project, he suggests, implicitly challenges why such information was made public in the first place. "I'm afraid to go home" "I'm afraid to go home," one Canadian reservist expressed, while another, Nati Hubberman, a dual Canadian-'Israeli' citizen, recounted asking, "Is it safe for me to fly to Canada?" after seeing his name on the site, in statements made to 'The Times of Israel'. Canadians in Foreign Militaries and RCMP Scrutiny Serving in foreign militaries, including the 'Israeli' military, is generally legal for Canadian citizens. The 1937 Foreign Enlistment Act primarily prohibits recruitment within Canada, not service abroad . The RCMP previously closed an investigation into alleged illegal 'Israeli' recruitment in Canada without charges in June 2023 . However, a separate, ongoing RCMP probe into "core international crimes" related to the 'Israeli' aggression on Gaza, launched in early 2024, has added a new layer of anxiety. While not a criminal investigation at this stage, the RCMP is collecting information and has not ruled out future prosecution if a perpetrator with a "nexus to Canada" is identified.

Trump, Starmer to meet in Scotland, with Gaza on agenda

Ammon News - U.S. President Donald Trump will host British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at his golf resort in western Scotland on Monday for talks expected to range from their recent bilateral trade deal to the worsening hunger crisis in Gaza, the two governments said. Trump, riding high after announcing a huge trade agreement with the European Union late on Sunday, said he expected Starmer would also be pleased. "The prime minister of the UK, while he's not involved in this, will be very happy because you know, there's a certain unity that's been brought there, too," Trump said. "He's going to be very happy to see what we did." Starmer had hoped to negotiate a drop in U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs as part of the discussions, but Trump on Sunday ruled out any changes in the 50% duties for the EU and has said the trade deal with Britain has been "concluded." The two men are expected to travel from Trump's luxury golf resort in Turnberry, on Scotland's west coast, to a second sprawling estate owned by Trump in the east, near Aberdeen. Casting a shadow over their visit has been the deepening crisis in the war-torn Gaza enclave, where images of starving Palestinians have alarmed the world. Starmer has recalled his ministers from their summer recess for a cabinet meeting, a government source said on Sunday, most likely to discuss the situation in Gaza as pressure grows at home and abroad to recognize a Palestinian state. The British leader on Friday said his country would recognize a Palestinian state only as part of a negotiated peace deal, disappointing many in his Labour Party who want him to follow France in taking swifter action. Trump on Friday dismissed French President Emmanuel Macron's plan to recognize a Palestinian state, an intention that also drew strong condemnation from Israel, after similar moves from Spain, Norway and Ireland last year. "Israel' quit talks to prolong war, says Hamas official

Hamas senior official Khalil Al-Hayya accused the Israeli Occupation of deliberately withdrawing from ceasefire negotiations to prolong the war on Gaza and press forward with a plan to displace Palestinians forcibly. In a televised speech on Sunday, Al-Hayya said the suffering of people in Gaza had reached indescribable levels and that their sacrifices would not be in vain. He described Gaza's civilian population as enduring burdens beyond what nations or mountains could bear. Al-Hayya praised the armed resistance, particularly the Qassam Brigades, Quds Brigades, and other factions, claiming they had successfully disrupted the Israeli military's 'Gideon Chariots' operation. He emphasized that for the past 22 months, the resistance leadership had used every available tool and relationship to halt the Israeli aggression on Gaza. During that time, Hamas participated in difficult negotiations and demonstrated what he described as maximum flexibility, without compromising core Palestinian principles. According to Al-Hayya, Hamas had responded positively to all proposals put forth by mediators in the most recent round of talks and had reached broad agreement on many of the items. However, he said the group was taken by surprise when both the Israeli delegation and US envoy Steve Wietkoff abruptly withdrew from the talks, calling it a 'blatant move' intended to sabotage negotiations and continue the war. He rejected what he described as 'the occupation's negotiation games,' insisting that the Palestinian people should not be made victims of political manipulation. Al-Hayya described the Israeli withdrawal as part of a broader strategy to waste time while enabling further genocide in Gaza. He said that even as the talks collapsed, the Israeli side criticized the agreed framework on aid distribution in an effort to sideline the role of the UN and local institutions. He also warned of a wider "Israeli" plan to displace Palestinians en masse, pointing to efforts to retain control over aid mechanisms that have already resulted in deaths, and the occupation's insistence on carving out a large section of Rafah to establish a buffer zone for the displaced. Al-Hayya said this move paves the way for forced expulsion, either through Egypt or the sea, as part of what he called a clear attempt to eliminate the Palestinian cause.
