Custody death: Jifri's family to move court

Time of India3 days ago
Kozhikode: The family of Thamir Jifri, who died while under police custody at Tanur on Aug 1, 2023, has said that they will approach high court against the CBI chargesheet. The family raised suspicions over exclusion of senior police officers and the dropping of murder charge in the chargesheet.
The CBI has invoked IPC Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) in the case. The family has alleged that the chargesheet has shielded senior police officers who are responsible for the death. The chargesheet had named a SCPO and four CPOs attached to the Dansaf team and former Tanur SI as accused.
"How can murder charges be dropped in a death which happened due to custodial torture? We suspect if moves have been made to protect some senior officers. The medical report had clearly stated that the death was due to torture and as such the dropping of section 302 is suspicious," Jifri's brother Harris Jifri said.TNN

Special CBI court exempts 3 more accused in Manesar land scam case

Chandigarh: The Special CBI court of Panchkula has decided to temporarily exempt three more persons, including a bureaucrat, while initiating the proceedings of framing charges in the Manesar land scam case involving former Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda and 31 other accused, including former bureaucrats and private builders. The case came up for hearing on Thursday. As per a copy of the order accessed by TOI on Saturday, three more persons against whom the arguments on framing of charges shall not be initiated include Dhare Singh, the then chief town planner, former IAS DR Dhingra, the then Director Industries, and Kulwant Singh Lamba, the then deputy superintendent (town and country planning) department. The proceedings against the three have come to a standstill due to the pendency of SLPs in the Supreme Court. The apex court has already given relief to Dhare Singh and DR Dhingra, while the petition moved by Lamba is yet to come up for hearing. Meanwhile, three more accused to whom the court has given relief include former bureaucrats Sudeep Singh Dhullon, Murari Lal Tayal, and Rajeev Arora. The Special CBI judge has fixed Aug 22 as the next date of hearing to initiate proceedings or arguments on the issue of framing charges. While referring to Dhare Singh, Kulwant Singh, and DR Dhingra, the judge has brought on record the orders and proceedings of the apex court. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 3BHK Transformation Possible for ₹4.5 Lakh? It may be recalled that the issue concerns the 914 acres of land which was planned to be acquired for the creation of Industrial Model Township (IMT) in Manesar, Gurugram. Soon after the notification of Section 4 of the Land Acquisition Act while notifying the area to be acquired in Aug 2004, there was panic among the residents of villages identified for land acquisition. As a result, the builders and land mafia came into play and procured the lands from villagers at throwaway rates for abstaining from certain clearances. In 2007, the industrial department freed the land from the process of acquisition. It was alleged that the entire scam of builder-official and land mafia had political patronage, and the aggrieved moved the court. Finally, on the directions of the Supreme Court, the CBI started the probe and filed the chargesheet naming former CM Hooda. Dalit man killed over Rs 70 in 2020: 2 brothers get life imprisonment

Representative Image AGRA: An SC/ST court in Aligarh sentenced two brothers, Virendra Singh and Hoshiyar Singh, both in their early 50s, to life imprisonment for murdering 26-year-old Dalit man Manoj Jatav over a Rs 70 dispute in 2020. The judgement, delivered on Friday, was made available on Saturday. Prosecution officer Chaman Prakash Sharma said that on June 5, 2020, Manoj and his cousin had gone to a shop in Sarkoriya village, where the shopkeeper demanded Rs 70 that Manoj owed, leading to an argument. Later, the brothers and four others allegedly attacked Manoj's house, killing him and injuring his uncle, Arun. Police booked all six accused under IPC sections for murder, rioting, unlawful assembly, attempt to murder, insulting the modesty of a woman, and criminal conspiracy, along with the Arms Act and SC/ST Act. Five were granted bail months later, but Virendra remained in custody. After the trial, four co-accused were acquitted for lack of evidence, while Virendra and Hoshiyar were convicted and fined Rs 55,000 each. They were taken into custody after the verdict. "The case was being heard in the SC/ST court. After examining all evidence and witnesses, the court on Friday acquitted the four co-accused but convicted Virendra and Hoshiyar, imposing life terms and a fine of Rs 55,000 each. As the court pronounced its judgement, both convicts were taken into police custody and sent to jail," prosecution officer Sharma said. Udaipur Files producer says he is receiving death threats after film's release

A day after Udaipur Files was released in theatres across India, producer Amit Jani claimed that he has been receiving 'death threats' over the film. In a X post on Saturday, Jani stated that he has been getting repeated calls from an unknown number, with the caller threatening to kill him with a bomb or shoot him. Jani added that the caller introduced himself as Tabrez, a resident of Bihar. In his post, Jani urged the authorities to register a case against Tabrez and arrest him. Last month, the Central government granted 'Y'-category armed security cover to the Udaipur Files producer in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. It came days after the Supreme Court allowed the producer to approach the police and seek protection as he alleged a threat to his life. Y-category security includes a detail of 8 to 11 personnel, including commandos, to protect the individual around the clock. Udaipur Files was released across India on Friday, August 8, after the Delhi High Court on Thursday gave the go-ahead for its release. It was initially slated for release on July 11, but faced many delays due to censorship and legal troubles. The Supreme Court had directed the Delhi High Court to address challenges against the government's approval of the film's release. Udaipur Files is based on the 2022 murder of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor, who was brutally killed in broad daylight in his shop in Udaipur, Rajasthan, by two men for allegedly sharing a social media post in support of former BJP member Nupur Sharma following her controversial comments on Prophet Mohammed during a debate show on a private news channel. According to police reports from 2022, the prime accused, Mohammad Riaz Attari and Ghaus Mohammad, entered Lal's shop pretending to get clothes stitched before attacking him with a knife and slitting his throat. They recorded the brutal murder and circulated the video on social media, claiming responsibility for the heinous act, which triggered national outrage and raised serious concerns about radicalisation and communal violence. The accused were booked under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, besides provisions under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Initially, the case was probed by the Rajasthan police, but later the National Investigation Agency (NIA) took over it. The trial is pending before the special NIA court in Jaipur.
