
Malaysian motorists debate how to ‘outsmart' AI-powered AWAS cameras that calculate point-to-point journey times

With a variety of navigation tools being able to alert drivers of speed traps, it has become imperative that a new deterrent be found.
The latest anti-speeding devices was shared on X by Abang aji (@aponakdikato) who detailed out that the new-fangled Automated Awareness Safety System (AWAS) calculates the average speeds between two points.

If a motorist arrives at a certain destination faster than the average time required to cover the distance, it will be surmised that the speed limit was NOT observed. 'A court summon will duly be served as opposed to an ordinary summon,' warned the poster.
He went on to share the location of these cameras along the North-South Expressway (PLUS).
According to media reports, the new AWAS system is set to begin pilot testing on two highways: the KL-Karak Expressway and the North-South Expressway starting in June.
Editor's Note: But the latest media report by Berita Harian citing Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook's office stated that the trial dates for AWAS have not yet been ascertained.
This is despite back in March, the Transport Ministry's secretary-general Jana Santhiran Muniayan having mentioned that the AWAS trials would kick off in June.
On the KL-Karak Expressway, the AWAS speed camera will monitor speed limits of motorists travelling between the Genting Sempah tunnel and the Gombak Rest and Relaxation Area.
On the North-South Expressway, the test run will cover the stretch from the Senawang toll plaza to the Simpang Ampat toll plaza in June.
The reaction online was decidedly mixed with some motorists eager for a system that can catch speed demons while motorists who like to floor it are circumspect.
One netizen reckoned that it would be best if a vehicle had cruise control, allowing the driver to maintain a constant speed that is below the prescribed limit.
Another simply remarked that he would have 'to make a couple more stops at various R&Rs' to prolong his travel time.
However, one motorist could not hide his contempt over such attempts to nab speed demons, stating that no such attempts were made to enforce road safety regulations.
He was alluding to heavy vehicles and possibly the recent accident that claimed nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) members' lives.
This was a good idea noted one netizen who however questioned if it would be truly effective. He counselled that an awareness campaign would be better suited.
Forget about racing-oriented or performance vehicles was the advice proffered by another netizen. Better to focus on fuel-saving models was the pertinent point.
But as pointed out by one commenter, this was just a pilot scheme with full roll-out further down the line – possibly in September 2025.
Typical of Malaysians, there will be loud calls for stern action whenever a road tragedy occurs such as the aforementioned crash involving a FRU truck.
But when possible solutions are suggested, they are met with scepticism and grumblings of it being heavy-handed.

Malaysian vehicle owners particularly resent paying traffic summonses for illegal parking, unless forced by police action. Motorists tend to view summonses in three informal categories. First, local council tickets are often ignored due to their perceived lack of enforcement power. Second, traffic police summonses have more legal weight, as non-payment can lead to arrest warrants. Still, many ignore them, especially for illegal parking. RTD summonses, however, are usually taken seriously, as they block road tax and licence renewals until the summonses are paid. Even then, the most stubborn ignore police and RTD's annual flat rate amnesty offers. RTD said that it collected only RM56 million from 374,024 summonses, far below the potential amount, which could have been double or triple that amount. This suggests that many drivers aren't deterred by blacklisting — they continue driving without insurance, road tax or licences. The police discount, valid until June 30, offers a flat RM150 rate for speeding and traffic light violations — similar to RTD's offer. Here lies the problem. Motorists' blase attitude towards these offers reflects a contempt for traffic laws and penalties. This contempt has translated into more serious traffic offences, and more tragic accidents. Since the discounts don't improve road safety, it's time to scrap them and revive tougher penalties that deter offenders. Sure, that would mean more officers and working hours to round up offenders. Police may have to return to making "house calls" on offenders but it's a necessary price to forcibly change an entrenched mindset. There is a plausible solution: integrate data sharing between the traffic police, RTD, Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) and, while we are at it, the local councils. Under this integration, summonses imposed by traffic police and local councils are automatically recorded by the RTD and SPAD, which immediately blacklist drivers and vehicles with outstanding summonses. Alas, this may not happen in the near future because these agencies and their processes operate independently with little push to exchange data and information. Even when traffic police files a request to the RTD to blacklist certain offenders, the process is tedious and inefficient. Still, this logical and unified system isn't sidelined just yet: there are still efforts to combine the Automated Awareness Safety System, the Automated Enforcement System and the Kejara points demerit system. There's only one problem: this initiative had been lumbering for more than a decade and it is still lumbering.

Highway operators must invest in smart tech and R&D
AS Malaysians embarked on their annual Hari Raya journey back to their hometowns in early April, the nation witnessed an all-too-familiar scene—heavy congestion on major highways. Social media platforms were flooded with images and stories of gridlocked traffic, restless children, and long queues at rest stops. While these stories have become a routine part of festive seasons, they highlight a deeper issue: the increasing inadequacy of our highway infrastructure and traffic management systems to cope with rising vehicle numbers. According to the Transport Ministry, Malaysia had 36.3 million registered motor vehicles as of Oct 2023. The Malaysian Automotive Association further reported over 816,000 new vehicle registrations in 2024. This exponential growth has placed immense pressure on our road networks, particularly during peak seasons. The Malaysian Highway Authority estimated that during the Hari Raya peak period, approximately 2.77 million vehicles used the highway network each day—a staggering number by any measure. A need for more than just extra lanes Among the many toll highway operators in Malaysia, PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) is the largest and one of the most established in Southeast Asia. It manages the North-South Expressway, ELITE, the Butterworth-Kulim Expressway, and both Penang bridges. It also owns TERAS Teknologi, the developer of the Touch 'n Go and SmartTAG systems. Despite its vast experience and high toll revenue, PLUS—and highway operators more broadly—have not introduced many innovative traffic solutions in recent years. The most visible initiative has been the introduction of 'Smart Lanes', which allow the temporary use of emergency lanes during traffic peaks. However, the use of the term 'Smart Lane' in Malaysia may be misleading. In developed nations, smart lane systems involve sophisticated traffic management technologies—variable speed limits, lane automation, and sensor-driven lane allocation. These systems dynamically adapt in real-time to changing traffic conditions. Malaysia's version, by contrast, is rudimentary. It involves opening the emergency lane for limited periods using flashing lights and signage with no smart technology integration. This often leads to confusion among drivers, bottlenecks when the lane ends, and potential delays for emergency services. A call for investment in real smart systems Highway operators need to move beyond short-term solutions and invest meaningfully in physical assets, rapid-response capabilities, and research and development (R&D). One area that needs immediate attention is incident management. Congestion is frequently caused by delays in clearing accidents or breakdowns. Setting up rapid-response teams equipped with motorcycles and emergency equipment can significantly reduce recovery time. Additionally, intelligent transport systems (ITS), artificial intelligence (AI), and Internet of Things (IoT) applications should be adopted more widely. With the right infrastructure, it is possible to monitor traffic patterns, detect incidents instantly, and manage lane usage in real-time. Such systems are already in use in many developed nations. Highway operators should also work closely with local research institutions and universities to develop and implement smart traffic solutions tailored to Malaysian conditions. Rethinking rest areas Another aspect often overlooked is the condition of rest and service areas (R&Rs). During peak travel seasons, these facilities are overwhelmed. Long queues at restrooms, insufficient parking, and limited food options frustrate users. More temporary or mobile toilets should be made available during festivals, and facilities must be maintained to high standards to ensure a pleasant travel experience. Toward seamless highway travel Ultimately, the future of highway travel in Malaysia must rest on a more holistic, user-centred approach. It is no longer sufficient to rely on toll collections and physical expansions of the road network. Operators must embrace innovation and technology. With the right investment in infrastructure, data analytics, and human capital, it is possible to ease congestion, improve safety, and offer road users a significantly more comfortable and efficient travel experience.
