PAFA won't leave young players in the lurch after Perak's pullout

The Star29-04-2025

PETALING JAYA: The Perak Football Association (PAFA) are ready to help young Perak players following the club's decision to pull out of next year's Super League.
PAFA president Datuk Mohd Azhar Jamaluddin said the association respected owners XOX's decision to withdraw from the league due to financial constraints faced by the company.
'The association take note of XOX's decision to dissolve the team and withdraw from the Super League,' he said.
'PAFA deeply appreciates and extends its sincere gratitude to XOX for their contribution to the team.
'We also sympathise with the issues faced by Perak players, especially the young players. PAFA will assist within their capabilities, especially in football development and the careers of young Perak players.''
Despite the team being dissolved, Azhar said football will continue to grow in the state through grassroots development efforts carried out by the association.
'Currently, PAFA are forming the upcoming Malaysia Games (Sukma) team while also providing experience to the team by allowing them to compete in the A1 orA2 league.
'We will also seek advice from the state government, Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), Malaysian Football League (MFL), and Amateur Football League (AFL) on the next steps to be taken,' he said.
On Saturday, Perak chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Azim Mohd Zabidi said the owners XOX had officially withdrawn from next season's Super League, ending the team's journey.

My Grandad's From Melaka, New Harimau Malaya Hero Hevel Tells Hs Detractors

KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 (Bernama) -- To those who question his eligibility to play for Harimau Malaya, midfielder Hector Hevel has this to say: 'My grandfather hailed from Melaka'. Though he doesn't know much about his late grandfather, the 29-year-old said that was the connection that kickstarted talks which culminated in him playing a starring role for Malaysia in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers against Nepal in March. For the record, Hevel is one of seven heritage players in the Harimau Malaya squad. bootstrap slideshow The other six are strikers Rodrigo Holgado and Imanol Machuca and centreback Facundo Garces (from Argentina); defender Jon Irazabal and left-back Gabriel Palmero (Spain); and striker Joao Figueiredo (Brazil). But none of them could have dreamed of making an instant impact like Hevel did, who not only scored the opening goal in their 2-0 win over Nepal in their opening Group F match of the Asian Cup Qualifiers at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in March but also took home the Man of the Match award. And now, having revealed that he will be joining serial winners Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) next season, Hevel plans to use his time here to trace his family lineage. "I will try to go (and seek information about my family's Malaysian ancestry) when I play with (11-time Super League champions) JDT. I will try to learn more about them,' he said at a press conference here today. But that's for another time. For now, Hevel is thrilled to bits after receiving a second call-up to the Harimau Malaya setup as they gear up for their second 2027 Asian Cup Qualifiers Group F match against favourites Vietnam at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday (June 10).

Terengganu deny in talks to release winger Akhyar

KUALA NERUS: Terengganu have denied allegations that the club are currently in negotiations with Brunei for the transfer of their agile winger Akhyar Rashid. Their acting chief executive officer, Mohd Syahrizan Mohd Zain said that so far, no party had come forward with an official request, including the invited Super League team Brunei. He said the Kedah-born player has a contract with the Turtles until 2027 and remains in the team's main plans for the upcoming Malaysian League (M-League) season. 'The player (Akhyar) is still contracted until 2027. We have not received any official letter, let alone engaged in negotiations with Brunei regarding the player's transfer,' said Syahrizan. 'We consider the matter to be mere rumours and speculation on social media. Our focus is on building the team for the new season.' However, Syahrizan said that if any party was interested in acquiring their player, they must go through the correct channels and procedures as stipulated by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and the Malaysian Football League (MFL). According to him, the Turtles will only consider any transfer offers if the player is not in the coaching staff's plans for the 2025-2026 season. Akhyar, 26, joined Terengganu last season on a loan deal. During that period, he successfully scored 10 goals in the M-League and Shopee Cup competitions. — Bernama

Be wary of Penang as they stack up high-profile players ahead of new season

Good time to switch: Bruno Suzuki sees the move to Penang as a timely step up in his career. — PDRM FC PETALING JAYA: Penang are wasting no time in bolstering their ranks ahead of the new Super League season, announcing a string of high-profile signings that signal their intent to climb the table in 2025. Leading the charge is seasoned Japanese-Brazilian attacker Bruno Suzuki, midfield workhorse Firdaus Saiyadi, and proven Ivorian goal-getter Tchetche Kipre – names that have already stirred excitement among the Panthers' faithful. The club kicked off a social media blitz this week, unveiling both new arrivals and retained players as they gear up for a fresh campaign. While the departure of long-serving Brazilian centreback Rafael Vitor, who had been with Penang since 2020, leaves a significant void in defence, the buzz surrounding the new recruits has revived optimism among fans. Suzuki, 35, reunites with head coach Wan Rohaimi Wan Ismail, with whom he enjoyed a productive run at Police in 2021. The forward credits Rohaimi's belief in his abilities as the driving force behind the move. 'Last season, when Police played Penang, Rohaimi came to me and said, 'Join me next season'. I told him to send the contract and he did,' said Suzuki. 'I played as a second striker under him and we clicked, and even though I was mostly setting up chances, I still managed to score seven goals.' Suzuki sees this switch as a timely step up in his career, and expressed gratitude to his former club for laying the foundation. 'I'm not getting any younger, so moving to Penang is the right progression for me – professionally and personally. The timing was perfect, and of course, the offer was better,' he said. 'I owe a lot to Police. They gave me a platform to showcase my ability, and because of them, I stayed relevant in the market.' The veteran forward had two separate stints with Police, first in 2021 and then returning in 2023 from Bangkok FC, continuing until mid-2025. In addition to Suzuki, Kipre and Firdaus, Penang have also snapped up Amirul Hisyam Awang Kechik, Chia Ruo Han, centreback Akmal Zahir, and fullback Ahmad Irfan Noor. Rumours are swirling that the Panthers may hire Bosnian winger Danilo Sipovac and Brazilian playmaker Thiago Fernandes. The Malaysian transfer window officially opens on Monday, but Penang's proactive approach shows they are serious about turning things around after last season's 10th-place finish. With experience, flair, and tactical reinforcements on the way, the islanders could well be the dark horses to watch in the upcoming campaign.
