‘Today, Parents Feel Proud...': PM Narendra Modi Highlights India's Sporting Revolution Under NSP 2025

India.coma day ago
Speaking about the National Sports Policy 2025 (NSP 2025) and grassroots initiatives such as the Khelo India University Games, PM Modi noted that sports, once considered a distraction from studies, are now being celebrated alongside academic achievements. 'Today, parents feel proud when their children succeed in sports. This mindset change is vital for creating a robust sporting culture,' the Prime Minister said.
Changing Perceptions
For decades, many families in India discouraged active participation in sports, fearing it would harm career prospects. According to PM Modi, this mindset has shifted. Young athletes are now receiving recognition, encouragement, and opportunities to pursue their passion while building a future in professional sports.
Infrastructure from Villages to the Olympics
Under NSP 2025, the government aims to create a comprehensive sports ecosystem stretching from rural schools to the highest international levels. This includes developing infrastructure, training facilities, and institutional support to ensure athletes from far-flung regions have equal opportunities. PM Modi stressed that bringing sports to underserved areas will not only unlock hidden talent but also strengthen national unity by fostering participation from all corners of India.
A Vision for the Future
The Prime Minister reaffirmed his commitment to making India a strong sporting nation. By combining infrastructure investment with a societal shift in perception, the government hopes to ensure that sports become an integral part of education and community life. 'Just as we celebrate top marks in exams, we should also honour those who bring laurels to the nation in sports,' PM Modi said, urging citizens to support the country's athletes.
With policies like NSP 2025 and platforms like Khelo India, the country is working toward a future where every child, regardless of where they live, has the chance to dream big in sports and make it to the global stage.

Election Commission flags key hurdles to creating a common electoral roll

New Delhi: A uniform qualifying date , a standardised system of preparing electoral rolls by states, and synchronising delimitation of assembly constituencies with panchayats and municipal wards are some of the prerequisites for a common electoral roll for all elections, the poll panel has informed a parliamentary panel. Independence Day 2025 Modi signals new push for tech independence with local chips Before Trump, British used tariffs to kill Indian textile Bank of Azad Hind: When Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose gave India its own currency This submission of the poll panel to a parliamentary panel gains significance as it comes amid criticism over the special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls. The Election Commission of India has also informed the parliamentary committee that a new Form 6B has been devised for electors to provide their Aadhaar details voluntarily. However, linking of Aadhaar with voter ID is fraught in legal complications. The poll panel also stated that it is considering amendments and modifications to the relevant provisions related to linking of Aadhaar with Voter ID and enrolment forms in view of the Supreme Court's direction in the matter. It underlined that linking of Aadhaar with voter ID card is voluntary and not obligatory. Live Events All these submissions of the Election Commissions of the poll panel were noted by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice in its action taken report on 'Specific Aspects of Election Process and Their Reform'. The commission, responding to the parliamentary panel's recommendation for common electoral rolls, has underlined that it shares its electoral rolls with state election commissioners of 32 states and UTs. For one common electoral roll the poll panel said, "A uniform system of preparation of electoral rolls by State Election Commissions (SECs) as well as a uniform qualifying date, section details within polling stations under a constituency, needs to be prepared as per the extent of the ward area of Panchayat and Municipal Council Elections." Delimitation of Panchayat and Municipal Council wards, done frequently at the time of elections or after every census, would require alignment with the delimitation of the assembly constituency and the same system of nomenclature and numbering of wards in rural and urban areas across all states, are also required for common electoral rolls, the panel said. In the same parliamentary panel report, the Law Ministry, which is the administrative ministry for ECI, has suggested that the issue of common electoral rolls is linked with one nation one election. On the issue of amending the Representation of the People's Act 1951 , for making candidates ineligible for filing false information and affidavit, the poll panel has said it has already made a recommendation in the same nature, while the Law Ministry said it would consider the recommendation when electoral reforms would be carried out in future.

US negotiators postpone August 25 Delhi visit, trade talks with India stalled ahead of sixth round

A long-planned visit by a US team to New Delhi for trade negotiations has been cancelled, as reported by PTI. The delegation, led by Assistant US Trade Representative Brendan Lynch , was due to arrive on 25 August for the sixth round of discussions on a proposed bilateral trade agreement . As reported by PTI, an official confirmed the development, saying, 'From their (US) side, the trade negotiations (are) halted, whether (this is) forever or temporary, there's still no idea. They said they won't come for the August 25 meeting.' Independence Day 2025 Modi signals new push for tech independence with local chips Before Trump, British used tariffs to kill Indian textile Bank of Azad Hind: When Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose gave India its own currency Five rounds of talks have been completed so far. The sixth was expected to be crucial, coming just as additional US tariffs were set to come into force. Timetable under pressure As reported by NDTV Profit, sources familiar with the matter said both governments remain in touch, but no new dates have been agreed. This uncertainty now clouds the September–October target set by both sides to finalise the first tranche of the trade deal. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Knee Pain? This Morning Trick Helps Wellnee Undo On Thursday, senior Indian officials had said that the country was 'fully engaged' with the United States through multiple channels, including ministerial and industry-level dialogues. They described the US as a 'very important trade partner' but added that the status of the August round would only be known closer to the date. The cancellation now makes it unlikely that tariff relief for India will come any time soon. Live Events Rising tariff pressures The setback comes against the backdrop of steep tariff measures announced by Washington. On 7 August, the US imposed a 25% levy on Indian exports, which it described as a 'reciprocal tariff' to address trade imbalance. President Donald Trump has since doubled the additional duty to 50%. A second 25% penalty rate is due to take effect on 27 August, specifically targeting India's 'continued purchases' of Russian crude oil. India has criticised the move. Officials called the measures 'unfair and unreasonable,' pointing out that other major buyers including the EU, China and the US itself continue to import Russian commodities. India's position on Russian oil Despite US pressure, India has kept up its purchases. According to data, imports averaged 1.8 million barrels per day in the first half of August, higher than the 1.6 million barrels per day recorded in July. A government source explained the rationale: 'We are buying more from (the US) than before, but we are still buying Russian oil. We can not stop (it).' The source added that Russian oil makes 'a lot of difference in terms of money.' Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took a firm line in his Independence Day address, making clear that India would not accept any trade arrangement that undermines the interests of farmers or cattle rearers. Trump's warning President Trump, speaking to Fox News on Friday, said, 'he (Russian President Vladimir Putin) lost an oil client, so to speak, which is India, which was doing about 40% of the oil. China, as you know, is doing a lot… And if I did what's called a secondary sanction, or a secondary tariff, it would be very devastating from their standpoint. If I have to do it, I'll do it. Maybe I won't have to do it.' The comment came as Trump travelled to Alaska for a meeting with Putin. That summit ended without any agreement on the war in Ukraine. The cancelled visit was seen as a vital chance to ease rising trade tensions. Without it, both sides now face the prospect of tougher tariffs, political strain and a delayed trade deal. For India, the stakes are high. It needs continued access to energy imports and tariff relief for its exporters. For Washington, the issue is about enforcing its stance on Russia and narrowing the trade gap with India. With talks halted and no new timetable agreed, the path forward remains uncertain.

Delhi's infra boost: PM Modi to inaugurate Dwarka Expressway, UER-II; Rs 11,000 crore project to decongest Capital

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate two major National Highway projects in Delhi on Sunday, with a combined value of nearly Rs 11,000 crore. The inauguration marks a significant step in government's broader plan to ease congestion in the capital and improve connectivity across the region. The projects: the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II), are expected to greatly cut travel time, decongest arterial routes, and provide smoother links between Delhi and its neighbouring cities. The 10.1 km Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway has been built at a cost of around Rs 5,360 crore. It will not only help traffic movement but also provide multi-modal connectivity to Yashobhoomi, the DMRC Blue and Orange lines, the upcoming Bijwasan railway station, and the Dwarka cluster bus depot. Alongside this, the Alipur to Dichaon Kalan stretch of the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II), including new links to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat, has been developed at a cost of Rs 5,580 crore. This new corridor will ease pressure on Delhi's Inner and Outer Ring Roads, as well as busy intersections such as Mukarba Chowk, Dhaula Kuan, and NH-09. According to officials, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the full 76-km UER-II, developed as the third Ring Road of Delhi, and the 29-km Dwarka Expressway on Sunday. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? The Dwarka Expressway, fully operational, has been built in four packages at a cost of around Rs 9,000 crore. Its Haryana section was inaugurated by Modi in March 2024, just before the Lok Sabha elections. Meanwhile, the UER-II was executed in five packages with a total cost of Rs 7,716 crore. As per the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the UER-II begins at Alipur on NH-44 and connects with NH-9 and NH-48 in Delhi. Of the 76 km stretch, 54.2 km lies in Delhi while the remaining 21.5 km falls in Haryana. Conceived under the Delhi Master Plan 2021, it will also link the proposed IICC in Dwarka via the Dwarka Expressway, as per a TNN report.
