Philadelphia Flyers coaching search begins after Ian Laperriere's exit: Who takes over next?
Ian Laperriere's exit from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms has opened the door to one of the Flyers' most pivotal offseason decisions—who takes over as head coach of their AHL affiliate? With the organization doubling down on player development and system alignment, the choice of replacement could shape the Flyers' future.
But early frontrunners suggest this might be less about fresh ideas and more about familiar faces.
What's really behind the Flyers' decision to replace Ian Laperriere?
Philadelphia Flyers Assistant Coach Rumors: Who's most likely to join Rick Tocchet's Staff?
Laperriere may not have delivered a Calder Cup, but three straight playoff appearances with a revolving door of prospects is hardly a failure. Still, a playoff collapse against Hershey and the baffling decision to ride the aging Cal Petersen over top prospect Carson Bjarnason has become the talking point that defined his exit.
Add in the benching of promising forwards like Massimo Rizzo and Alex Ciernik, and suddenly Laperriere's 'development-first' narrative crumbled at the worst possible time.
But here's where it gets murky. Flyers GM Danny Brière seems to be pushing for a fresh start, but some of the rumored replacements raise more eyebrows than expectations.
Top of the list is John Snowden—Laperriere's assistant—whose coaching resume spans from the ECHL to the AHL with modest success.

He's a Brière-era peer from their ECHL days, which fuels speculation that this could be less about merit and more about mutual history.
Then there's Jay McKee, a name with stronger coaching credentials and a deeper bond with Brière dating back to their NHL playing days. McKee's work with OHL talent like 71-goal scorer Nick Lardis, proves he knows how to maximize young stars. But hiring a buddy from junior hockey might signal the Flyers are prioritizing familiarity over fresh innovation.
Even Cory Stillman enters the mix, boasting NHL assistant experience and recent ties to Canada's U-18 program. Conveniently, Stillman coached Flyers prospect Jett Luchanko and potential 2025 draft target Brady Martin.
The Flyers claim to be entering a new era of prospect development and accountability. But if they're simply handing the Phantoms' reins to someone from the old boys' club, this shake-up won't signal progress, it'll confirm the same closed-door habits that have plagued the organization for years.

One coach is out. A few names are circling. But until the Flyers prove they're hiring based on vision and not connections, fans have every right to question what's really going on behind the bench.

Ajit Agarkar distances himself from Shreyas Iyer's omission from Asia Cup squad: ‘No fault of his, nor is it ours'
BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar on Tuesday unveiled the 15-member squad for the Asia Cup 2025. One of the major talking points was the omission of Shreyas Iyer, despite his blistering run of form in IPL 2025, where he not only piled on runs but also guided Punjab Kings to the final. The selection committee went ahead with Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Hardik Pandya, and Shivam Dube, alongside skipper Suryakumar Yadav, in the middle order, as Shreyas had to miss out on the squad. Ajit Agarkar reacted to Shreyas Iyer's omission from the Asia Cup 2025 squad. Shreyas last played a T20I in December 2023, where he also scored a fine half-century in India's win over Australia. He also missed out on the 2024 T20 World Cup squad despite leading Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title that year. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar offered a clear explanation for Iyer's omission, stressing that neither he nor the panel was at fault. He said the committee opted for a combination they felt best suited the tournament's demands. "With regards to Shreyas, I mean, you need to tell him who he can replace. No fault of his, nor is it ours. It's just that we have to pick 15 at the moment, he'll have to wait for his chance," Agarkar said in the press conference. Shreyas Iyer has to wait for his chance despite incredible IPL 2025 Earlier this year, Iyer returned to the ODI side during the England series and went on to play a pivotal role in India's Champions Trophy triumph. He emerged as the team's leading run-scorer and the tournament's second-highest overall, amassing 243 runs in five innings at an average of 48.60, which included two half-centuries. He continued his sublime form in the IPL too, where he ended up as the sixth-highest run-getter and had his best season. The Punjab Kings skipper amassed 604 runs in 17 matches and innings at an average of 50.33, a strike rate of 175.07 and six fifties. He played a massive role in taking PBKS to their first IPL final since 2014, but the team fell short by six runs to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). The Asia Cup is scheduled to take place in Dubai and Abu Dhabi from September 9 to 28. India open their campaign against hosts UAE on September 10 in Dubai, before facing arch-rivals Pakistan on September 14 at the same venue. Their last group-stage match will be against Oman on September 19 in Abu Dhabi.

BCCI selectors shock fans with Asia Cup 2025 squad: Shreyas Iyer's omission sparks backlash as Shubman Gill named vice-captain
In a shocking turn of events, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India's Asia Cup 2025 squad at around 3:00 PM IST on Tuesday, August 19, at its headquarters with some shocking exclusions. After days of speculation that Shubman Gill might be left out, the star batsman was instead named vice-captain, sending fans into a frenzy. The big surprise? Shreyas Iyer, expected to secure a spot, was left out, along with Yashasvi Jaiswal, leaving cricket fans stunned and buzzing with debate. Asia Cup 2025 squad: Surya Kumar Yadav (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson (WK), Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh. Standby players: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag, Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar Why was Shreyas Iyer snubbed? "It's very unfortunate for Yashasvi Jaiswal, with Abhishek doing well, he can bowl as well - one of the two was going to miss out - same with Shreyas, not his fault. With respect to Shreyas Iyer, who can he replace? It's no fault of his, but neither ours," BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar said. Shreyas Iyer's omission sparks backlash It didn't take long for cricket fans to take to X (formerly known as Twitter) to express their disappointment - and even anger - towards the BCCI selectors for once again leaving out Shreyas Iyer, despite him being one of the top batters across all formats of the game. Shreyas Iyer who was highest scorer of CT and delivered with bat and as a captain is not selected,I know Gambhir has personal problems with him but this is about India,This is poor from BCCI. Did Shreyas iyer do something wrong ???? First dropped from test team now not in ODI too ??#AsiaCup Why not Shreyas Iyer @BCCI ??Why you are ignoring One of The Best Player in All 3 Formats ? Is India coach Gautam Gambhir favouring KKR players? Fans are also buzzing over the selection of Harshit Rana and Rinku Singh, who made the squad despite not delivering standout performances, particularly in the IPL 2025 season. Many believe that coach Gautam Gambhir continues to favour players from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) camp. No Shreyas Iyer in the Asia Cup both Rinku and Harshit Rana are in and Gill is the VC. GG is more KKR than most of us KKR fans, I love him so much #AsiaCup2025 Once again, a deserving player like Shreyas Iyer misses out on the Asia Cup squad. Honestly, this isn't surprising. Did anyone really expect Gautam Gambhir to set aside his personal bias? He's acting more like a politician than a coach. Why Shreyas Iyer not selected and Gill, Dube and Rinku is selected? And again Harshit Rana is selected. This KKR phobia of Gambhir will cost us Asis politics in BCCI.#justiceforshreyasiyer When is the Asia Cup 2025 set to begin? The T20I tournament, scheduled in the UAE from September 9–28, will act as a crucial warm-up ahead of next year's T20 World Cup. Why Shreyas Iyer Was Not Picked For Asia Cup? Ajit Agarkar Asks 'Who You Will Replace...'
Last Updated: Shreyas Iyer was not selected for India's Asia Cup 2025 squad. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained it was due to competition for spots. Shreyas Iyer was not picked in India's squad for Asia Cup 2025 after Ajit Agarkar and Suryakumar Yadav-led meeting of the Selection Committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in Mumbai on Tuesday. Team India chief selector Ajit Agarkar clarified at the press conference after the meeting that Shreyas Iyer missing out was not due to any fault of his but rather who he would have replaced in the squad. 'Shreyas Iyer. No fault of his. He has just had to wait for his chance. You have to tell me, who you will replace him with?," asked Agarkar. 'It's just that you can pick 15 and at the moment, he'll have to wait for his chance," he added. What Is India's Squad For Asia Cup 2025? Surya Kumar Yadav (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson (WK), Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh With Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel confirmed for the middle order, there were still two or three spots up for grabs. The No. 3 position was a tight contest between the current holder, Tilak Varma and Shreyas Iyer. Tilak impressed in South Africa, scoring two centuries and 280 runs at a strike rate of 198.48, though his IPL performance was modest with 343 runs in 13 innings at an average of 31.18 and a strike rate of 138.30. In contrast, Shreyas shone in IPL 2025 for Punjab Kings with a strike rate of 175.07, the highest since Chris Gayle (2011) and Suryakumar (2023) among those with over 600 runs in a season. But, in the end, Shreyas was not picked. He was not even picked in the reserves. When Is Asia Cup? The Asia Cup will take place in Dubai and Abu Dhabi from September 9 to 28. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has confirmed the venues for all matches. The tournament will follow the T20I format and feature eight teams: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, UAE, Oman, and Hong Kong. Group A consists of India, Pakistan, UAE, and Oman, while Group B includes Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong. Why Matches In UAE? Despite India being the official host, an agreement between the BCCI and the PCB ensures a neutral venue for the opposing team for three years when competitions are held in India or Pakistan. Dubai will host 11 matches, while Abu Dhabi will accommodate eight. The tournament opener between Afghanistan and Hong Kong is scheduled for September 9 in Abu Dhabi What Is India's Schedule For Asia Cup? India will begin their campaign against the UAE on September 10, with their highly anticipated match against Pakistan set for September 14 in Dubai. India's final group stage match against Oman will be on September 19 in Abu Dhabi. After the group stage, the top two teams from each group will advance to the Super 4, running from September 20 to 26. If India tops Group A, all their Super 4 matches will be in Dubai. If they finish second, one Super 4 match will be held in Abu Dhabi and the other two in Dubai. The final will be hosted in Dubai on September 28.
