Nellore: Claiming that his government is giving top priority for drinking water, garbage cleaning and silt removal in municipalities, MA&UD Minister Ponguru Narayana has said that pending works of silt removal in irrigation canals and drains will be completed in the next two months across the State, in view of the ensuing rainy season in October and November.
The Minister along with Nellore Municipal Commissioner YO Nandan and sanitary department officials, inspected the ongoing silt removal works in Pogathota area of 45th division in Nellore city on Monday.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that it was decided to complete the pending silt removal works in a time-bound manner to avoid people from facing inundation problem during rainy season. Alleging that the previous YSRCP government diverted Rs 3,000 crore funds related to municipalities to other purposes, but the TDP-led coalition government is giving top priority for addressing drinking water problem, garbage cleaning, and silt removal in all urban areas in the State.
Narayana has disclosed that silt removal works were taken up in 45 canals extended for 6.5 km in Nellore city and works are under progress.

Participating as chief guest at the 79th Independence Day celebrations at the Police Parade Ground here, the Deputy CM — who holds the panchayat raj, rural development, rural water supply, environment, forests, and science and technology portfolios — hoisted the national flag and received the guard of honour from the police and NCC contingents. In his address, Pawan said India's freedom was won through immense sacrifices, and that Independence Day should be celebrated not as a ritual, but with a sense of responsibility to protect the nation. Stable law and order, he stressed, was crucial for attracting investments and ensuring overall development. Highlighting the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, he reaffirmed the government's commitment to implementing the Super Six guarantees and other welfare schemes. Under the Thalliki Vandanam programme, Rs 8,745 crore had been deposited into the accounts of 67.27 lakh mothers, while one crore gas cylinders had been distributed under the Deepam scheme in two phases. Over the next five years, the scheme will provide three free cylinders annually, costing Rs 13,427 crore. Pawan announced a sharp hike in funds for national festival celebrations in panchayats — from Rs 100 to Rs 10,000 for minor panchayats and from Rs 250 to Rs 25,000 for major panchayats — enhancing the role and dignity of sarpanches. He lauded the state's achievement of holding village assemblies simultaneously in all 13,326 panchayats, advancing the goal of 'village self-rule.' To boost forest cover from 30 per cent to 37 per cent, one crore saplings have been planted and are being tracked through QR codes. He also cited the resolution of elephant attack issues by deploying 'kunki' elephants from Karnataka, and the launch of 61 tourism projects in Araku with a budget of Rs 1,022 crore. On his Pithapuram constituency, he said Rs 308 crore had already been spent on development works to transform it into a model constituency, with more projects planned over the next four years. The event featured police and departmental floats, cultural performances by school students, and the presentation of awards to officials, staff, and volunteers. Pawan also laid the foundation stone for the Rs 6-crore Red Cross Cancer Block at Kakinada Government General Hospital, funded through CSR contributions. The celebrations were attended by Deputy CM's wife Anna Lezhneva, senior officials, legislators, and public representatives from across the district.

Nellore: Minister of Municipal Administration and Urban Development Ponguru Narayana has said that TDP-led coalition government is committed for uplifting the living standards of farmers by allocating funds for development of cultivation in the district. He addressed the huge gathering after hoisting the national flag on 79th Independence Day organised at Police parade grounds here on Friday. The Minister disclosed that as part of this initiative the government has taken two Lift Irrigation Canals (LICs) called Anam Sanjeeva Reddy Somasila Lift Irrigation Scheme (ASSLIS) and Anam Sanjeeva Reddy High Level Lift Canal (ASHLLC), aimed to supply water for agriculture operations in both Atmakur and Udayagiri constituencies with a total cost of Rs 1,503 crore. Widening of Somasila North Feeder Canal with Rs 632 crore meant to brought 1.5 lakh acres under citation progress in Atmakur constituency in progress. The Minister said that 32 percent of Somasila reservoir Apron works with Rs 1.17 crore were completed and the remaining is under progress. He said repair works of Somasila, Kandeleru reservoirs works with Rs 3.87crores at tender stage. Due to the availability of 44.44tmc, and 16tmcft in Somasila, and Kandaleru reservoirs respectively, it was proposed to supply water for total 5.24 lakh acres for agriculture operations in the current agriculture season.

‘Stree Shakti' free bus travel scheme for women launched in Tirupati

Tirupati: The State government's flagship women's welfare initiative, 'Stree Shakti', offering free bus travel for women in RTC services, was launched in Tirupati on Friday evening by Endowments Minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy. Marking the launch, the Minister formally handed over the first 'zero fare' ticket to Tirupati Municipal Corporation Commissioner N Mourya. Speaking on the occasion, Ramanarayan Reddy said that before the elections, when the government had promised free bus travel for women under Stree Shakti scheme, opposition parties had criticised the move. 'Today, we have fulfilled that promise, ensuring free travel for women in RTC buses,' he said. Tirupati district Collector Dr S Venkateswar described the scheme as a 'boon' for women. He explained that women could avail free travel in Palle Velugu, Ultra Palle Velugu, Express, and Metro Express buses by showing a valid government-issued photo ID card. This facility is available for travel anywhere within the district and across the state. 'In our district, an average of 41,000 people travel by bus every day. With the launch of this scheme, we expect an additional 30,000 women passengers daily,' the Collector said. The district's 11 depots operate 356 buses across 136 routes in which women can avail the benefit. He added that the scheme is expected to generate annual savings of Rs 82.71 crore for women passengers, translating to about Rs 1,050 per month per beneficiary. Buses covered under the scheme will have markings in the front, and special yellow-coloured seats will be reserved for women. The event was attended by Tirupati MLA Arani Srinivasulu, MLC Balli Kalyan Chakravarthi, TUDA Chairman C Divakar Reddy, Deputy Mayor RC Muni Krishna, Yadava Corporation Chairman G Narasimha Yadav, Public Transport Department District Manager Jagadeesh and others.
