Kyle Manzardo's second career 2-homer game powers Guardians to 10-4 win over Rockies
Manzardo hit a two-run shot off Rockies starter Tanner Gordon (2-3) in the third inning and a solo homer against Jimmy Herget in the sixth. His other two-homer game occurred last Sept. 1 against Pittsburgh.
Gabriel Arias added a two-run single and José Ramírez and Bo Naylor scored two runs apiece for the Guardians, who are 3 1/2 games out of the final American League wild-card spot with Thursday's trade deadline looming.
Logan Allen (7-9) worked seven innings and allowed two runs on homers by Jordan Beck and Michael Toglia. The left-hander threw a career-high 113 pitches and matched his longest outing, winning for the second time in his last seven decisions.
Cleveland built 7-0 and 10-1 leads, tying its season-best with 15 hits. Manzardo posted three and Nolan Jones, Daniel Schneemann, Ramírez and Rocchio each had two.
Colorado's Warming Bernabel went 2 for 4 with a double and is batting .400 with two homers and three RBIs over his first four major league games. Kyle Farmer had a solo home run.
Key moment
Gordon fell off the mound on an aborted pitch in the second when his plant foot slipped on the dirt for a balk. David Fry advanced to second then scored when left fielder Beck mishandled Rocchio's single, giving Cleveland an unearned run.

Schwarber hits his 42nd homer in a 4-run 8th inning as the Phillies rally past the Reds
CINCINNATI (AP) — Kyle Schwarber hit his 42nd homer of the season, a two-run shot that highlighted a four-run eighth inning, as the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies rallied to beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-1 Monday night, extending their winning streak to four games. Schwarber's 42nd homer moved him past Shohei Ohtani and into the NL lead. The Dodgers faced the Angels later Monday night. Seattle's Cal Raleigh leads the AL and MLB with 45 homers. Schwarber has 97 RBIs this season. Reds left-hander Andrew Abbott (8-3) allowed only three hits through seven innings. But, with two outs in the eighth, he allowed RBI doubles by Weston Wilson and Trea Turner. Schwarber followed with a two-run shot off Tony Santillan to complete the rally. Abbott bounced back after a rough outing on Wednesday when he allowed four earned runs and a pair of homers in a 6-1 loss to the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Against the Phillies, he retired the first 12 batters he faced before J.T. Realmuto doubled leading off the fifth. YANKEES 6, TWINS 2 NEW YORK (AP) — Will Warren gave up three hits and two runs in 6 2/3 innings to become the first New York starting pitcher to get an out in the seventh inning in a month in a win over Minnesota. Warren (7-5), who allowed homers to Byron Buxton and Trevor Larnach, struck out seven and walked none before Luke Weaver and David Bednar finished off New York's 23rd win in its last 30 regular-season meetings with Minnesota. Cody Bellinger, Giancarlo Stanton and Ben Rice homered against Minnesota starter Zebby Matthews (3-4). Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered in the eighth after Trent Grisham and Aaron Judge hit RBI singles in the seventh. CARDINALS 3, ROCKIES 2 ST. LOUIS (AP) — Brendan Donovan hit a go-ahead two-run double in the eighth inning, Miles Mikolas didn't give up a hit through 5 1/3 innings, and St. Louis sent Colorado to their eighth straight loss. Juan Mejia (1-1) failed to hold a 2-1 lead in the eighth inning, while Kyle Leahy (3-1) pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings after Mikolas went 6 2/3 innings, his longest outing of the season. Mikolas was positioned for a loss after Warming Bernabel and Brenton Doyle drove in runs in the seventh inning to give the Rockies a 2-1 lead. Tyler Freeman broke up Mikolas' no-hit bid in the sixth inning. He gave up four hits, a walk and struck out three. Mikolas lost his shot at a win after Jordan Beck bunted his way on and advanced to second on Nolan Gorman's throwing error. Doyle drove home Mickey Moniak to put the Rockies ahead. Chase Dollander allowed one run through five innings, the first Rockies starter since Aug. 2 to allow fewer than five runs. BREWERS 7, PIRATES 1 MILWAUKEE (AP) — Brice Turang hit his first career leadoff home run, Jose Quintana allowed three hits over six solid innings and Milwaukee extended their winning streak to 10 games with a win over Pittsburgh. Quintana (10-4) struck out three and walked one as the Brewers (74-44) improved to 25-4 over the last 29 games, including 13-1 in the last 14. The only real hiccup was Joey Bart's home run in the third. Turang sent a sinker from Pirates starter Andrew Heaney over the wall in left center. Christian Yelich opened the third with a solo home run, RBI singles from Sal Frelick and Brandon Lockridge and an unearned run on Bart's throwing error capped the third inning. Grant Anderson held the Pirates without a hit in the seventh and eighth. Shelby Miller pitched a 1-2-3 ninth. ROYALS 7, NATIONALS 4 KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Salvadore Perez and Kyle Isbel hit two-run homers in the sixth inning and Kansas City beat Washington. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Perez homered off rookie Cade Cavalli after Maikel Garcia drew a leadoff walk, tying the game at 4. Adam Frazier singled, chasing Cavalli, and Jackson Rutledge (1-2) entered and retired Randal Grichuk on a double-play grounder. Nick Loftin had a two-out single before scoring on Isbel's fourth homer. Perez's homer was his 21st. James Wood walked leading off the first against Bailey Falter in his home debut for the Royals after being acquired from the Pirates at the trade deadline. Josh Bell hit his 15th homer — a 422-foot, two-out shot to left-center — to give the Nationals a 2-0 lead. Garcia, Perez and Frazier had consecutive singles to start the second for the Royals' first run. Loftin's sacrifice fly tied it 2-all. Falter left a tie game after four innings and 76 pitches. Wood singled off Daniel Lynch IV (4-2) leading off the fifth and Paul DeJong hit his fourth homer one out later to put the Nationals up 4-2. Mike Yastrzemski added a run in the eighth with a sac fly. Frazier finished 3 for 4 and Carlos Estévez pitched the ninth for his 30th save.

Flying High: First-place Blue Jays return home
See more sharing options Send this page to someone via email Share this item on Twitter Share this item via WhatsApp Share this item on Facebook TORONTO – It was feast or famine for the Toronto Blue Jays on their recent road trip that included a record-breaking beatdown of the Colorado Rockies and a series loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The first-place team is back home for a three-game series with the Chicago Cubs starting Tuesday night at Rogers Centre ahead of a three-game weekend set against the Texas Rangers. Toronto leads the American League standings at 69-50 and has a four-game lead on the Boston Red Sox entering play Monday night. Here's a look at five Blue Jays storylines to watch with about one-quarter of the season remaining: BIEBER FEVER The resurgence of veteran right-hander Max Scherzer and the emergence of southpaw Eric Lauer have given Toronto's starting rotation more stability. Story continues below advertisement The team's five-man crew – which also includes Kevin Gausman, Jose Berrios and Chris Bassitt – could soon become a six-man group as Shane Bieber nears a return. The 2020 American League Cy Young Award winner, who was acquired from Cleveland at the trade deadline, has impressed in his Triple-A rehab appearances. Bieber underwent Tommy John surgery last year. He has a career record of 62-32 with a 3.22 earned-run average over parts of seven big-league seasons. The Blue Jays set a modern-era big-league record with a whopping 63 hits over the three games in Colorado. Toronto also set a franchise record with 45 runs scored. Story continues below advertisement After dropping two of three games in Los Angeles over the weekend, the Blue Jays still lead the big leagues in hits (1,099), batting average (.269) and on-base percentage (.339). Toronto is also third in OPS (.767). TOUGH DECISIONS The Blue Jays will have some tough decisions to make this month as some big-name players get set to return to the lineup. Second baseman Andres Gimenez will soon be activated after spending five weeks on the injured list with a left ankle sprain. Outfielder/designated hitter George Springer, who has been out for two weeks due to a concussion, could also soon return. Recent call-up Buddy Kennedy is the most likely player to be sent down. A second roster move is expected to be a much tougher call, given it will likely involve a player who sees more regular playing time. ARMS RACE A couple of hard-throwing right-handers could make their mark at the big-league level for the Blue Jays over the coming weeks. Alek Manoah has impressed in his minor-league starts as he continues to build up after undergoing elbow surgery last year. Manoah finished third in Cy Young Award voting in 2022 and is 29-20 with a 3.34 ERA over 75 career starts for the Blue Jays. Story continues below advertisement Normally a starter, top pitching prospect Trey Yesavage threw in relief for Double-A New Hampshire last week for the first time since being drafted last year in the first round. He had nine strikeouts over five innings. STRETCH DRIVE A playoff berth appears to be a slam dunk for Canada's lone big-league baseball team. Entering Monday's games, Toronto has a 98.3-per-cent chance of qualifying for the post-season, per FanGraphs projections. The website lists the Blue Jays at 78.1 per cent to win the East Division and at 65.8 per cent to earn a first-round bye to the division series. After this homestand, Toronto visits the Pittsburgh Pirates and Miami Marlins before returning to Rogers Centre to play the Minnesota Twins and MLB-best Milwaukee Brewers.
