Alfie Boe says Michael Ball 'doesn't allow whistling backstage' due to superstition

Yahoo01-03-2025

Alfie Boe has revealed Michael Ball's strange theatre superstition and the 'ridiculous' thing people have to do if his backstage rule is broken.
The pair recently released their sixth album together, titled Together At Home and are due to begin their 2025 tour later this month across 12 major UK arenas.
Appearing on Saturday Kitchen Live today (March 1), Alfie told host Matt Tebbutt along with chefs Bryn Williams and Saliha Mahmood-Ahmed that Michael 'doesn't allow whistling backstage'.

Alfie shared: 'Back in the day, stage crew used to be sailors. When sailors weren't at sea, they'd come to work in theatres because they knew how to rig scenery, like they'd rig the masks and things, so they knew how to do that.
'The way they communicated on board ships was by whistling to each other so they did that in theatres.
'So if you whistle backstage, the superstition is a piece of scenery will come flying in.'
When Alfie was asked what Michael "makes him do" if he's caught whistling, he responded: 'Oh my goodness he does this ridiculous thing, he says you have go out of the room, turn around three times, swear, spit, knock on the door and asked to be let back in.'
He joked: 'I've done it so many times.'
Alfie continued: 'The problem is, I'm at home in my apartment and I'm walking around the house and I'm just about to whistle and I'm like 'I can't whistle'.'
Elsewhere on the BBC cooking programme, Alfie admitted he doesn't have any pre-show rituals but Michael does (and it includes a very sweet gesture).

He explained: 'We do this hand slap. We do this clap high five thing before we go on and then he's at one side of the stage and I'm at the other and we have our earpieces in.
'And we always whisper to each other just before we walk out on stage, we always whisper 'love you, love you too'.'
Alfie Boe and Michael Ball's Together At Home UK tour beings on March 29 at Cardiff's Utilita Arena.

Kim Cattrall Perfectly Explained Why She Met Partner Russell Thomas at Just the Right Time

While fans of Kim Cattrall have watched her date countless men in her years on Sex and the City, it seems she's luckier in love than even Samantha herself. Cattrall has been dating her partner, British actor Russell Thomas, since 2016, and she's finally opening up about their love story. In a new interview with The Times UK, Cattrall gushed about her longtime love. 'He's had an incredibly interesting life and really done it on his terms,' she said of Thomas, who is 14 years her junior. 'He's a bit of a rebel, which I love.' More from SheKnows Why Kate Middleton Is No Longer Wearing Her Engagement Ring That Belonged to Princess Diana The two first met in England when she was recording for a BBC radio show. The two instantly clicked, and soon Thomas was traveling to Canada (where she lives) to see her. 'We've been together almost ten years now,' she looked back. 'And we've had a blast. We've just had so much fun.' Cattrall, who's also starred in shows like Glamorous and How I Met Your Father, then explained why her connection with Thomas came at just the right time. In her words, having him was an expected joy after her brother Christopher's death by suicide in 2018. He was 55. 'I think when someone dies from suicide, those around them think, 'Why didn't I see it? Why wasn't I there?' Or, 'How could I have been ignoring, in retrospect, signs that were clearly unhealthy?' But that was ultimately his choice,' she said. 'I had to accept that I couldn't change that destiny. That as much as I thought I could, and as powerful as I thought I was, I couldn't have prevented it.' 'I keep saying I wish I hadn't gone through all that,' she said of the loss. 'And then I thought to myself, well, if I hadn't gone through that, I wouldn't have met Russ.' 'So life has surprises and trade-offs,' she continued. 'It was a bad time, but I learned a tremendous amount. And at the other end of it was this incredible, fun playmate.' We're so glad Cattrall has someone by her side no matter what. Princess Charlotte's Expected Role at Trooping the Colour Proves She's the Ultimate Big Sister

Princess Charlotte, 10, and the rest of the royal family are gearing up for Trooping the Colour on June 14 and fans are already expecting an important personal role for her. The middle child of Prince William and Kate Middleton is known to be the reliable rule-follower in the family — that means she will probably be helping Mom keep Prince Louis' adorable antics to a minimum. A royal source promised GB News that Charlotte loves playing the big sister role to her little brother. And if he misbehaves? More from SheKnows Kate Middleton's 2025 Trooping the Color Look Honors Both Princess Diana & Queen Elizabeth II 'Don't worry, his sister will do [take care of] that,' the palace insider confirmed. At Trooping the Colour in 2024, Charlotte was spotted helping Louis with royal protocol. She sweetly showed him how to hold his arms for the English National Anthem, but she also scolded him to 'stop' when he danced on the balcony. Charlotte takes her royal role very seriously. Princess Charlotte's 'strong character' is why her appearances will reportedly be ramped up this summer. Childrenswear designer Amaia Arrieta described the young royal to People as 'almost wise beyond her years.' 'She looks very confident and at ease with herself and the environment she's in,' she added. 'The maturity that comes with that responsibility—she seems to nail it every time.' Prince Louis, 7, has become known for his carefree, wild streak, something that royal fans don't necessarily see in Prince George, 11, or his younger sister. BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond explained why there seems to be parenting differences with Louis. 'Being the youngest is often something of a privilege,' she told the Mirror. 'You get away with a lot more and you are that little bit special as the last-born.' 'Catherine probably lets Louis run wild more than she did with George. She and William are very experienced parents and I'm sure they love all three kids equally—but probably in different ways,' she added. 'George because he's the first-born and has a destiny to fulfill, Charlotte because she's the only girl, and Louis because he's the youngest.' So, Charlotte will likely step up and guide Prince Louise throughout the Trooping the Colour festivities as she shines as a leader in the royal family.
