The SPFL star who was 'signed and sealed' for Rangers transfer this summer and why it collapsed

He held talks with the Light Blues in January before the deal stalled
Kevin Thomson claims Josh Mulligan had agreed a move to Rangers earlier this summer.

But the switch collapsed after a change of ownership and recruitment at Ibrox.

Mulligan, 22, was a standout for Dundee last season and attracted interest from the Light Blues in January.

Gers already struck a pre-contract agreement with Dens Park teammate Lyall Cameron and were weighing up a double swoop.
But the Ibrox outfit decided to pause their transfer business as the club rubberstamped the appointments of sporting director Kevin Thelwell and head of recruitment Dan Purdy.
Hibs then quickly moved to the front of the queue and completed a major coup by luring the versatile star to Easter Road.
Mulligan has hit the ground running in Leith and ex-Rangers and Hibs ace Thomson reckons the uncapped Scot will make the Hibees a fortune one day down the line.
Thomson told Open Goal: "He's a machine. He was signed and sealed to go to Ibrox. It was all agreed, I heard. All agreed.

"I think it was just the change in recruitment and ownership that stalled it a wee bit.
"I don't know if it was to the degree where he was just about pen to paper.
"He covers so many different positions. He probably doesn't like the word, but he's like that utility type player who can cover so many different types of positions.

"Great age, physical specimen. He'll be one who can hopefully get the Hibees a few quid. Kieron Bowie will become a good asset for the club as well."

Newcastle given two drastic options to end Alexander Isak and Liverpool transfer saga

Alexander Isak's future is no closer to being resolved as the wantaway forward continues to train away from his Newcastle team-mates after Liverpool's interest in signing him Newcastle United have just two options to resolve their stand-off with wantaway striker Alexander Isak — sell up or force him to play in the reserves. Former manager Sam Allardyce believes the club have been left in a difficult position by the Swedish forward. ‌ Isak is not currently training with the first team squad and has said he will not play for the Toon Army again, regardless of the outcome of the transfer window. But there has been little progress over any move after Newcastle initially expressed that their star forward was not for sale. ‌ Liverpool saw a £110million bid immediately knocked back earlier this month and currently do not seem set to make another offer unless encouraged to do. Newcastle have not signed a forward to replace Isak yet however. ‌ The Magpies are in the market for Yoane Wissa, who is not training with Brentford currently, but that appears to be a target eyed separately from Isak's situation. Newcastle saw Callum WIlson depart at the end of his contract earlier in the summer. And the north east-based side have few good options remaining in how to settle the conflict with Isak. The striker, who has 62 goals in 109 appearances for Newcastle, has three years remaining on his contract and Allardyce believes it would take strength from the club's board to not sell their prized asset. "Sell him. I'd sell him, I'd go for the best price," he told talkSPORT. "Once a player makes his mind up as determined as he is, and because there's nothing else you can do role-wise. "I suppose if he stays away, the only thing you do is don't pay him, but that obviously becomes a situation where nobody wins." Allardyce continued: "Unless the board are strong enough to say 'let him rot, Sam, we'll go and buy you another centre-forward', which is the best way to deal with it in my opinion. ‌ "Somebody has to stand up to a player, or players, that are gonna start doing this on a regular basis, where they've got contracts - in Isak's case a particularly long contract of three years - then the owners are obviously looking not to devalue him. "But at the end of the day if you want to stand up and be counted, put a shock across the players across the Premier League saying 'you can't treat your clubs like this after you've dedicated yourself to a contract'." Rangers welcome Alloa Athletic to Ibrox this weekend as they begin their Premier Sports Cup campaign with a last-16 clash at Ibrox on Saturday evening. Russell Martin's side have endured a torrid start to their domestic campaign, with 1-1 draws against both Motherwell and Dundee cementing their worst start to a league campaign since 1989. However, the Gers' attention will now turn to the cup as they look to progress to the quarter-final stage of a competition they have won only once in the last 14 seasons. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The Rangers head coach is expected to make plenty of changes for the game, with a Champions League qualifier against Club Brugge to come next week, meaning the likes of Oscar Cortes, Nedim Bajrami, and Connor Barron could be handed their first starts of the season. Cyriel Dessers, Max Aarons, Thelo Aasgaard and Hamza Igamane are all doubts for the game. Alloa boss Andy Graham will be hoping to spring a surprise in Govan and plunge the home side into further dismay, though he will likely have to do it without a trio of first-team players. Scott Taggart, Daniel Church, and Andy Clarke are all expected to miss the game against Rangers. Philippe Clement eyed for shock boss job on other side of world but ex-Rangers boss needs to recover from major surgery

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) FORMER Rangers boss Philippe Clement is reportedly being eyed for a return to management. But the potential move could be scuppered for several reasons - including the fact the Belgian is recovering from surgery. Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up 2 Philippe Clement was sacked by Rangers in February Credit: PA 2 Clement was dismissed amid a dire run of domestic form Credit: Getty Clement, 51, was axed as Rangers manager in February amid a horror run of domestic form. Having been kept in place after the disastrous 1-0 Scottish Cup defeat to second tier Queen's Park at Ibrox, a home defeat to St Mirren a fortnight later saw Gers chiefs end his 18-month stint in charge. Former Club Brugge and Monaco boss Clement has been out of work since. But he could be about to be afforded the chance to return to management on the other side of the globe. Belgian outlet Nieuwsblad say that Chinese Super League club Shandong Taishan have a 'concrete interest' in hiring Clement as their new manager. The five-time champions of China parted ways with coach Choi Kang-hee and are now on the lookout for an experienced European manager, according to the report. It says Shandong have already made initial contact and want to persuade Clement to join the club ahead of the start of the 2026 league season, which kicks-off next January. They're currently seeing out the current campaign with an interim boss at the helm. Clement could be offered a salary of just shy of £1million. However, there are already a couple of spanners in the works. Nobel Mendy timeline and what he brings revealed, and Dessers' injury impact The report adds that Clement himself would rather return to football in one of Europe's big leagues. The second reason is that he's currently recovering from surgery. It says that Clement has undergone a hip operation and, as you would expect, needs to rehabilitate from that. In a recent interview with Sacked in the Morning on the BBC, Clement hit out at the manner of his Rangers sacking. He told of his anger and frustration at the way in which he lost his job - and the fact he wasn't first to find out. Clement said: "It felt really empty. "I was also angry that moment because all the journalists knew before me. "I got a lot of messages from Scotland, England and Belgium even, before I get a message from the club, so I was not happy with that, that's not good. "I told them also that it was totally disrespectful, that moment. "But I felt really empty because you build something together in your full day and night with everything in the club. "And I had to do much more than you normally should do as a manager in the months before when positions were not filled in."
