'Sowing Division': BJP After Karnataka Hikes Housing Quota For Minorities
The Karnataka government has increased reservation for the downtrodden and minorities under various housing schemes from 10 to 15 per cent, inviting a sharp reaction from the BJP, which has accused the Congress of "pushing religious quotas to appease its vote bank".
Announcing the decision, which has been cleared by the Siddarmaiah-led Karnataka cabinet, on Thursday, state Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil said the government had noted that the number of people without homes is higher among the downtrodden and minorities, and it is committed to providing housing for all.
"We are very particular that all should get housing. Housing for all is to be implemented and, right now, we see that the houseless are more among various downtrodden and minorities. We have increased the housing reservation from 10 to 15 per cent, looking at the ground realities," the minister said.
Mr Patil stressed that the reservation will be increased for all minority communities, including Christians, Jains and Buddhists.
"The government is very particular that the houseless, irrespective of the community they belong to, should get (houses). Housing for all is the government's resolve," he added.
Launching a scathing attack, BJP leader Amit Malviya said the decision was unconstitutional and accused the Congress of "sowing the seeds of division" and "ripping apart the social fabric of Karnataka".
"This is brazen. Blatantly illegal and unconstitutional. There can be no reservation on the basis of religion - the Constitution is unambiguous on this. Yet, the Congress government in Karnataka is hell-bent on pushing religious quotas to appease its vote bank. This isn't governance, it's dangerous social engineering," he wrote on X.

"Congress is determined to sow the seeds of division, polarise communities, and rip apart the social fabric of Karnataka - all for short-term political gain. Karnataka deserves better," he added.

The state had seen another controversy over reservation earlier this year, after the Assembly had cleared the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurements (Amendment) Bill, providing 4 per cent reservation for Muslims in public contracts.
The BJP and Janata Dal (Secular) had termed the Bill unconstitutional and sent a petition to the governor, claiming it would polarise society.
In April, Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot sent the Bill to President Droupadi Murmu, saying that the Constitution does not allow reservation based on religion.

Stray dog menace in Kannur: BJP to launch protest

Vinod Kumar has said that the party will launch a strong protest against what he described as 'criminal negligence' on the part of the Kannur Corporation and the district panchayat in addressing the worsening stray dog menace in the city. Mr. Vinod Kumar said fear had gripped the city, especially among children, many of whom were now avoiding school. 'People are afraid of walking on the streets. Alleging poor implementation of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme, Mr. Vinod Kumar said that it was being operated with just a four-member team despite thousands of stray dogs in the district. 'The system must be expanded, and local bodies should act immediately to catch and shelter stray dogs,' he said. He also pointed to poor waste management by the Corporation as a contributing factor to the rising stray dog population. As part of the agitation, the BJP will organise a march to the Corporation office June 24, he said.

Kanpur CMO suspended after public spat with DM that exposed UP BJP rift
During his suspension period, Nemi would be attached to the Directorate General and Medical Health Services in Lucknow. According to a government order issued Thursday, Shravasti Additional Chief Medical Officer Uday Nath has been appointed as the new CMO of Kanpur. After the suspension order, Nemi addressed a press conference here, alleging the DM was 'pressuring' him to carry out 'illegal' work, and went after him since the CMO denied to oblige. Lucknow: Kanpur Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Hari Dutt Nemi was suspended Thursday after days of public spat with District Magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh, a dispute that threatened to cause divisions with the state BJP with party MLAs taking sides. The district magistrate and the chief medical officer were locked in a public quarrel for days. At the centre of their fight are corruption allegations against Nemi and the CMO questioning Singh's style of functioning. Singh sought the CMO's removal. Their fights also brought to the fore the differences within the BJP, with some MLAs siding with the CMO, while others with the DM. Samajwadi Party claimed that while it may appear to be a case of two officers sparring, it is actually a fight between Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and his deputy Brajesh Pathak who is also state health minister. A section of BJP legislators from Kanpur, including Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana, lobbied in favour of Nemi, urging the government not to remove him. Mahana wrote to Pathak Tuesday, defending the CMO's conduct and urging he be allowed to continue in Kanpur. Mahana praised Nemi's 'people-friendly' approach and effective implementation of government health schemes. BJP MLC Arun Pathak and Govindnagar MLA Surendra Maithani wrote separate letters to the deputy chief minister, commending the CMO's 'respectful' behavior towards public representatives. However, BJP MLA from Bithoor Abhijeet Singh Sanga took a different stand and wrote to Chief Minister Adityanath, rather than Pathak. In his letter, Sanga accused Nemi of corruption and alleged the CMO was behind the circulation of controversial audio clips that allegedly maligned the district magistrate. He further claimed Nemi misbehaved with staff, disobeyed government orders, and manipulated doctor transfers for personal gain. Former BJP MLA Neeraj Chaturvedi also waded into the controversy, alleging Tuesday that the assembly speaker, without naming him, is influencing the matter in favour of the CMO. Chaturvedi sought a thorough investigation into the CMO's working style. In a letter to the state government, he alleged serious irregularities in healthcare services, citing alleged deficiencies found during inspections of Community Health Centres (CHCs) and Primary Health Centres (PHCs). He also mentioned alleged arbitrary transfers of doctors under Nemi's tenure. Singh accused the CMO of negligence and unprofessional conduct, and claimed this has contributed to the deteriorating state of health services in the district. Tensions escalated after three audio clips, purportedly featuring CMO Nemi making derogatory remarks about the DM, surfaced on social media. 'This is the only DM in 75 districts who is taking credit for everything. If any meeting can happen in 20 minutes, he takes an hour to narrate stories from all around the world and exaggerates things. Now I am seeing women who go for meetings get irritated,' he was heard saying. Nemi, however, denied it was his voice and claimed it was AI-generated. The authenticity of these audio clips has not been independently verified by ThePrint. But after the matter escalated following several complaints from health officials, district magistrate Singh wrote a letter to the principal secretary of health to remove the CMO, saying that several complaints had been received against him for not following government orders, mentally harassing district health officials and seeking bribes for transfer postings. Also on Saturday, the DM confronted the CMO about the clips during a meeting. Nemi questioned the authenticity of the recordings, claiming they were manipulated using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to malign his image. Not satisfied with the response, the DM asked the CMO to leave the meeting. Responding to the charges, Nemi reiterated his innocence and alleged a conspiracy to tarnish his image. He said his sole focus was to improve the functioning of the health department. According to sources in the district administration, the DM had flagged instances of alleged negligence on part of the CMO during multiple surprise inspections over the last few months. He planned to take action after these visits. The CMO had also been reportedly absent from the office for the past few days. In the meanwhile, a photo of a saffron towel purportedly placed on his chair went viral on social media, garnering a lot of attention. Samajwadi Party MLA Amitabh Bajpai said, 'The rift between officials and BJP MLAs is common in the state, but I feel that this issue is actually between Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak. Common people are feeling betrayed by this government as corruption has not stopped.' Bajpai hinted the DM is considered close to Chief Minister Adityanath and the CMO is in the good books of Deputy Chief Minister Pathak. ‘Bharat Mata' portrait pits LDF against Kerala Governor, again. ‘Turning Raj Bhavan into party office'

Thiruvananthapuram: A Kerala minister boycotted a Raj Bhavan event Thursday over the display of a Bharat Mata portrait in the second such incident this month, marking yet another low in the tussle between the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government and Governor Rajendra Arlekar. He alleged that this was part of a move to turn the Raj Bhavan into 'a political party office'. This comes just weeks after Agriculture Minister P. Prasad boycotted another Raj Bhavan event on World Environment Day objecting to the presence of a Bharat Mata portrait. Prasad later held a separate event at the Secretariat. The opposition Congress party had extended support to the minister. 'The Governor must understand that Indian nationalism is rooted in the Constitution. It is not based on a singular cultural identity, but on an inclusive and democratic vision enshrined in our Constitution. This must be clearly asserted,' Sivankutty said in his statement. He further stated that India is not a monolithic entity constructed around any single symbol, image, or form, and that Indian nationalism draws its strength from its diversity. 'Describing the image of a woman holding a saffron flag as the sole symbol of Indian patriotism ignores this fundamental reality. The idea of India does not reside in mythology or imagination. It lives in the sovereignty of its people, the rule of law, and the constitutional guarantees of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity,' the minister added, saying the Governor must remember that Indian patriotism means upholding constitutional values and safeguarding diversity. However, Governor Rajendra Arlekar responded by asserting that there is no question of removing Bharat Mata from public spaces. 'There is no question of doing away with Bharat Mata, as we draw our idea of patriotism and nationhood from Bharat Mata,' the Raj Bhavan said in a statement, quoting the governor. On Wednesday, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had also criticised the Governor for the display of a Bharat Mata portrait in his office. In a Thiruvananthapuram press briefing, Vijayan said the Governor's residence must remain neutral and should not become a platform for political propaganda. Earlier this week, members of the Students' Federation of India (SFI), the student wing of the ruling CPI(M), held a protest march to the Raj Bhavan against the display of portraits of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) ideologues Golwalkar and Hedgewar at the Governor's residence.
