Shane Bieber trade grades: Who won the Blue Jays and Guardians deal?

USA Today31-07-2025
The Toronto Blue Jays almost check all of the boxes as a playoff contender -- a really solid lineup and an improved bullpen. Their rotation? It probably needed help despite having Jose Berrios and Kevin Gausman.
The solution? They made a 2025 MLB trade deadline deal for Shane Bieber (not to be confused with Justin Bieber), the Cleveland Guardians vet who hasn't thrown in a Major League game in 2025 as he's spent time rehabbing in the minors.
The former Cy Young winner in 2020 has struggled with injuries in recent years, with a stint on the IL in 2023, followed by Tommy John surgery in 2024. And this turned out to be a one-for-one trade, which makes a ton of sense given his contract situation.
As we're doing with all the major trade deadline deals, we're grading this one for both sides. Let's break it down:
Blue Jays and Guardians trade details
Blue Jays get: RHP Shane Bieber
Guardians get: RHP Khal Stephen
Blue Jays trade grade
Sometimes, it's as simple as: Have need, go fill it. The Jays could use another frontline starter to compete in the AL East and beyond, so here's Bieber. There's some risk involved with the fact that he's a bit of a rental with a $16 million player option for 2026, along with the fact that he has pitched in the big leagues this year.
But that's a worthy gamble, and although they dealt a prospect with some promise, I'll say this is the right move for a team whose window doesn't open up that often.
GRADE: B+
Guardians trade grade
Hey, this is neat:
This would indicate some upside, and while the Guardians are at .500 and could be a player in the AL Wild Card race, leaning toward selling is the right way to go, especially with Bieber being a question mark. I like this move a lot.

After Surviving Deadline Day, Steven Kwan Tagged As Offseason Trade Bait

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Cleveland Guardians reportedly got calls on All-Star outfielder Steven Kwan at the trade deadline, but they opted to hold on to him in hopes they could erase the 1 1/2 game deficit in the wild card standings. No matter the results of this season, R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports expects that the rumors will swirl again in the offseason around the two-time All-Star. CLEVELAND, OHIO - AUGUST 2: Steven Kwan #38 of the Cleveland Guardians takes the field in the first inning during the game against the Minnesota Twins at Progressive Field on August 2, 2025 in Cleveland,... CLEVELAND, OHIO - AUGUST 2: Steven Kwan #38 of the Cleveland Guardians takes the field in the first inning during the game against the Minnesota Twins at Progressive Field on August 2, 2025 in Cleveland, Ohio. More Photo byKwan has been an integral part of the Guardians' lineup and success, but it remains to be seen how the soon-to-be 28-year-old's athletic profile will change over time. If the Guardians project an early decline from their outfielder, they could look to take advantage of the two remaining years of team control and load up their farm system in an offseason deal. Kwan was sought after by the San Diego Padres, per reports, but after trading for Mason Miller, the Padres had already dealt Leo De Vries, baseball's No. 3 prospect, who was the headliner the Guardians were asking for. This stalled conversations with San Diego and the Guardians had to move on, ultimately keeping their outfielder. The Guardians' intentions for the winter are unclear, but if they believe their championship window is closing, Kwan may be on the trading block. The Detroit Tigers have a stranglehold on the division this season, and with much of their core on multi-year contracts, they could be in that position for a while. If Guardians indeed were shopping Kwan at the trade deadline, it would not be surprising to see rumors build once the season ends. Blue Jays rewrite MLB record books in three-game sweep against Rockies

During the past three days, the Toronto Blue Jays took some serious batting practice at Coors Field in Denver. Unfortunately, for the Colorado Rockies, that batting practice took place in real games and further cemented their miserable season. Toronto obliterated Colorado 20-1 on Wednesday, capping a historic three-game series during which it outscored the Rockies 45-6 to set a franchise record for runs in a three-game set. The Blue Jays had 63 hits in the series, the most by a single team in a three-game series in the Modern Era (since 1901). The run differential of 39 is one shy of the major league record of 40, set by the Brooklyn Superbas against the Cincinnati Reds in 1901. The Superbas are now commonly known as the Los Angeles Dodgers. "It's a really good team that puts the ball in play a ton. That's what they do," Rockies interim manager Warren Schaeffer said, in the understatement of the year. "It's why they're on top of the American League. So you've got to tip your hat to them, and we've got to make better pitches." In Wednesday's game, the Blue Jays hit five homers and had 24 hits, and they smacked 13 round-trippers during the series. Toronto also had 40 more hits than the Rockies, the biggest hit differential in a three-game series since 1900. The Blue Jays (68-48) have a four-game lead over the Boston Red Sox in the AL East. The Rockies have the worst record in baseball at 30-84 with a run differential of minus-316. The major league record in the modern era was set by the 1932 Boston Red Sox with a run differential of minus-349. Picture this: Sportsnet host's selfie challenge fuels dreams for Indigenous students

Sports broadcaster deepens six‑year commitment to Matawa First Nations communities Sportsnet host Jamie Campbell has spent years telling stories from the ballpark. Now, he's using the spotlight to help write a different kind of story by means of a unique fundraiser. Campbell invited fans at the Blue Jays game on Aug. 2 to line up for a photo opportunity on the Sportsnet set at Rogers Centre. Instead of charging for pictures, he handed out cards with information on how to donate to the Jamie Campbell Bursary, a fund supporting students from Matawa First Nations across northern Ontario. "My kids got to walk to their public schools for the entirety of their public school careers," Campbell said in an interview with Yahoo News Canada. "For so many First Nations students, that's just not a reality." The broadcaster has worked with Matawa since 2020, when a volunteer trip delivering PPE during the pandemic introduced him to the organization, which represents nine remote First Nations communities. "I have personally witnessed the benefit of this financial assistance," said Campbell. "There are students at Matawa First Nations getting an opportunity to achieve things that will resonate within their communities long-term." For many Matawa youth, continuing school means leaving home for Thunder Bay as early as age 12, a move Campbell says is frightening for many. His goal, he says, is "to do what I can do, whatever that might be, to make the path to completing an education easier.' The bursary has been in place for nearly six years, but Campbell said attending Matawa's graduation ceremony in June deepened his commitment. 'It was an eye-opener for me to be able to see the impact,' he said. The impact of the bursuries can be seen in students like one recent graduate who is pursuing welding. Campbell recalled being gifted an intricate metal sculpture by the young man. 'This young man has incredible talent … and it's very, very likely that he succeeds.' Asked what he would say directly to a student receiving support from the bursary, Campbell didn't hesitate. 'If you're a dreamer and you have ambition, you can do almost anything you want in this lifetime. Don't limit yourself," the sports broadaster shares.' Campbell says the Saturday photo session went as planned and over the span of 40 minutes, raised over $1,600.00 geared for Matawa First Nations. "I'm incredibly grateful to those who donated, and to the Sportsnet and Blue Jays staff who stuck around to ensure it went smoothly," said Campbell.
