Six chefs to watch out for in Cascais

Time Out07-05-2025

Since 2021, Tiago Penão, a local from the area, has been a rising star in Cascais' culinary scene. That was when he opened Kappo in the heart of the town, a name that translates to "cut and cook." Ambitious yet laid-back, it's a high-end Japanese restaurant that centres on the intimate connection between the chef and those seated at the counter. While you can choose à la carte, the ideal experience is to surrender to the omakase menu, where the chef takes you on an authentic journey to Japan with the finest ingredients. And it's not a cliché – each course is accompanied by a perfect blend of explanation and storytelling. Every dish is served in bespoke crockery, like a custom-made frame designed to surround a work of art.
Although the Japanese tradition is woven throughout Kappo's concept – which has been such a success that it quickly led to a younger sibling, the Japanese tavern Izakaya, run by Tiago's older brother – the stories and experiences of the team who work there daily also shine through on the plate. For instance, Manu prepares a Venezuelan dessert that she used to share with her grandmother – a three-milk cake that's then charred with Japanese charcoal. At Christmas, they make rabanadas. While Japan is always the focus, they also leave room for other explorations, further enriching the personality of the restaurant.
Before Kappo, Tiago Penão worked at Midori, at the Penha Longa Resort in Sintra, the first Japanese restaurant in Portugal to earn a Michelin star – many believe he will soon be joining the list of Michelin-awarded chefs himself.

Two Singapore restaurants are named in the World's 50 Best Restaurants 51-100 extended list for 2025

Every year, we wait in anticipation for the announcement of the World's 50 Best Restaurants to see which establishments from Singapore make it onto this world-acclaimed list. It's never really a matter of 'if', but 'how many'; After all, eating is one of the top pastimes of Singaporeans and our city is brimming with such a diverse line-up of cuisines and dining venues – the perfect representation of the multi-culturalism that we're known for. Ahead of the official announcement of the top 50 on June 19, 2025, the World's 50 Best Restaurants 2025 extended list of 51 to 100 has just been revealed, and two from this Lion City have been named: modern Australian-style BBQ restaurant Burnt Ends (#93), and Labyrinth (#97) which prides itself on its 'new Singaporean cuisine'. Both Burnt Ends and Labyrinth are no stranger to the World's 50 Best Restaurants list, having emerged at 68th and 92nd place respectively in last year's extended list. Admittedly, this is quite a drop for Burnt Ends in particular, both one-Michelin-star holders will have to work a little harder to maintain their top 100 placings in next year's edition of this food award ranking. This year sees one less Singapore-based dining establishment on the 51 to 100 extended list, with Meta (#95 in 2024) making a disappearance. This can only mean one thing: It's either been bumped up to the top 50, or fallen off the list entirely. Only time will tell. Last year, only one restaurant from Singapore made the top 50 ranking: Odette, one of the two long-standing F&B tenants at the National Gallery that remains after its refresh. The other five, which include rooftop bar Smoke & Mirrors and Cantonese restaurant Yan, have since made a sad exit from the museum. Odette was crowned the Best Restaurant in Asia in 2023's awards. We'll be eagerly waiting to see if it remains in the top 50 global placings this year, and whether any other of our favourite restaurants will be joining the party.

(Picture: BBC) Wedding bells ring for the EastEnders next week – or rather don't – as my new spoiler pictures confirm that Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) calls off her nuptials to Alfie Moon (Shane Richie). Whether or not they eventually walk down the aisle remains to be seen, with a number of hurdles blocking their path. Firstly, there's the dodgy adult website that son Tommy (Sonny Kendall) has been paying for, casting a huge shadow over their happiness. To make matters worse, his twisted new friend Joel Marshall (Max Murray) then introduces him to an influencer who utters disgusting remarks about women online. Secondly, Alfie seems to reject her advances – and Kat believes that it's because of how slow their sex life has been since his cancer treatment. He's mortified when she cancels the wedding, and seeks advice from an unlikely source. Will Kat find a place in her heart to put these issues to one side? It seems that almost every relationship is on the rocks in upcoming scenes, as Elaine Knight (Harriet Thorpe) is given some devastating news about husband George (Colin Salmon). Although he rejected her advances, Elaine is convinced that he's a cheater – and even more so when he's seen hugging another ex-wife, Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins), on the balcony of The Prince Albert. Big EastEnders return as blast from the past confirmed for Elaine

A returning EastEnders character sets off a chain of events that could change the course of Elaine Peacock's (Harriet Thorpe) life next week. Walford is set to welcome back the Queen Vic landlady's former foe Drew Peacock (Paul Clayton) in forthcoming scenes, as he supports her through trouble in her marriage to George Knight (Colin Salmon). Drew made quite the impact when he first appeared in the BBC soap last year, with Elaine's grandson Johnny Carter (Charlie Suff) booking him as the drag queen for her hen do, not realising they had a historic connection. It was then revealed that Drew was the lover of Elaine's late husband and Linda Carter (Kellie Bright)'s dad John, with the former having had no idea that her father was gay. While it was initially daggers at dawn between Elaine and Drew, they later laid the ghosts of the past to rest, and he offered her some words of advice ahead of her wedding to George. Six months later, relations between Elaine and George have soured due to the continued presence of his ex-wife Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins). Earlier this week, Elaine was left furious after finding out George had secretly been helping Cindy with her plans for The Albert and caused a scene at the official relaunch party. But just as tensions start to thaw between the couple on Monday, George's son Junior Knight (Micah Balfour) drops the bombshell that his dad went to see his mother, Sabrina, on Christmas night. George then confesses that Sabrina kissed him, but swears he rejected her. However, Elaine is devastated that he's lied again and throws him out of The Vic. Cindy offers him a shoulder to cry on, but when Elaine spots them together on the balcony of The Albert, she retreats to the café and makes a phone call to Drew. More Trending While she is waiting, a customer called Stephen tries to chat Elaine up. However, when Drew arrives, he bats Stephen away and gives Elaine a pep talk. Elaine takes Drew's words to heart and leads her to make a shocking decision that could have lasting consequences. What has Elaine done?
