Laad Bazar to Chowmahalla: Hyderabad rolls out red carpet for Miss World contestants

Hindustan Times13-05-2025
Hyderabad, The contestants of Miss World 2025, representing 109 countries, were given a vibrant welcome on Tuesday as they visited Hyderabad's iconic Charminar and the bustling Laad Bazar , famous for its bangles and pearls.
The 400-year-old monument came alive as the beauty queens arrived to a red carpet welcome, accompanied by the beats of Marfa music—a rhythmic, percussion-heavy genre popular in the Old City.
The atmosphere turned celebratory as some of the contestants joined in, dancing joyfully to the music. The group attended a special photo shoot with the historic Charminar serving as a stunning backdrop.
They also waved to the crowd from a specially-erected stage, drawing cheers from onlookers.
As part of a heritage walk through the Old City, the contestants visited Laad Bazar for a curated shopping experience.
They witnessed live demonstrations of traditional bangle-making techniques and expressed admiration for the craftsmanship of the local artisans.
Shopkeepers at Laad Bazar welcomed the Miss World participants with roses and, in a generous gesture, did not accept money for the purchases, official sources said.
They also urged the contestants to speak about the uniqueness of Hyderabad, Charminar, and Laad Bazar in their home countries.
Later, the Miss World participants proceeded to the Nizam-era Chowmahalla Palace, also located in the Old City, where a specially-arranged cultural evening was held in their honour.
The Telangana government made elaborate arrangements—including tight security and traffic management—to ensure the smooth conduct of the visit.
The Miss World 2025 contest began with a glittering ceremony in Hyderabad on May 10 and will continue until May 31.
As part of its broader vision, the Telangana government has drawn up an action plan to leverage the global event to enhance the state's international profile and attract investments.
During their stay, the contestants will tour several key tourist attractions across the state, including heritage sites from the Nizam era and the UNESCO-listed Ramappa temple in Warangal.

India's Slowest Train Takes Almost 5 Hours To Cover 46 Km, Here's Why

Last Updated: The Nilgiri Mountain Railway runs between Mettupalayam Railway Station and Udagamandalam Railway Station in Ooty, Tamil Nadu. Indian Railways is the lifeline of the nation, connecting millions of people each day. While some trains, like the Vande Bharat, are celebrated for their speed and efficiency on long routes, there's also one that holds the title for being the slowest. This particular train takes nearly five hours to cover a distance of just 46 kilometres. But why does this train take so much time to cover such a short distance? Let's find out. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, also known as the Mettupalayam-Ooty passenger train, is India's slowest train. It runs between Mettupalayam Railway Station and Udagamandalam Railway Station in Ooty, Tamil Nadu, which is why it is also called the Ooty Toy Train. The train travels at about 9 kilometres per hour, meaning that it takes roughly 5 hours to cover the 46-kilometre distance. This makes it nearly 16 times slower than the fastest trains in the country. The train journey takes you through beautiful hill stations such as Keller, Coonoor, Wellington, Lovedale and Fern Hill. Although the train moves slowly, it gives travellers a chance to unwind and take in the peaceful, beautiful scenery that faster trains often miss. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway runs on a meter gauge track, which is narrower than the broad gauge used by most trains. The line has over 16 tunnels, 250 bridges and more than 200 sharp curves. These features make the journey challenging and require the train to move at a slow and steady pace. A Railway With History The idea for the Nilgiri Mountain Railway was first suggested in 1854, but construction began only in 1891 due to the difficult mountain conditions. The railway was completed in 1908 and is the only operational rack railway in India today. The train is powered by old-fashioned steam locomotives that keep the old way of travel alive. It is operated by Southern Railway and remains a nostalgic ride for many passengers. In 2005, UNESCO declared the Nilgiri Mountain Railway a World Heritage Site. It was added as an extension to the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. Train Details And Timings The train starts from Mettupalayam railway station, located at the foothills of the Nilgiris and ends at Ooty station, Tamil Nadu. The coaches are painted blue and cream, made mostly of wood, and have large windows so passengers can enjoy the views. There are two types of coaches: First Class with 72 seats and General Category with 100 seats. Due to growing tourist demand, a fourth coach was added in 2016. The train leaves Mettupalayam at 7:10 AM and reaches Ooty by around 12 noon. It returns from Ooty at 2 PM and arrives back by 5:30 PM. Tickets can be booked online through the IRCTC website. Manushi Chhillar on stereotypes of coming from pageant world: Instead of focusing on breaking notions, I just do my job

Actor and former Miss World Manushi Chhillar is a handful of films old in Hindi film industry and she has dabbled with both glamerous and non glamerous roles so far. Did she have to fight any stereotypes during her transition into films? Manushi Chhillar made her acting debut in 2022. "If someone else has a preconceived notion about where they can fit you, I think instead of focusing your energy on breaking that notion, you just keep doing your job in best possible manner and chase the kind of work that you want to do and everything will fall into place," says the actor, who has was recently seen in the film Maalik, alongside Rajkummar Rao. Manushi adds, "Whatever people have to say it's their opinion but For me personally when I transitioned into films I didn't feel like I had to do something very different or I had to be a certain way. I dress according to my job. I was a girl doing her job as Ms World and I am a girl doing my job as an actor now." However, Manushi doesn't agree with beauty pageants images of being only about glamour and looking pretty. Breaking the myth, she says, "The first thing is that when people say that world of beauty pageant is of glamour, I do not agree with that. It's that one night in 365 days when a girl is crowned, which you see on stage." The actor, who won the 2017 Miss World pageant, says, "The whole year what you are doing is not a very glamorous job. I was working with a charity called Beauty With A Purpose and we were constantly traveling to the remotest areas of different parts of the world and that's not a very glamorous job. So technically what I had to do as a Miss World was not just wear a crown, dress up and get photographed. Probably the media covers that one night, which gets most spoken about."
