Manushi Chhillar on stereotypes of coming from pageant world: Instead of focusing on breaking notions, I just do my job

Hindustan Times2 days ago
Actor and former Miss World Manushi Chhillar is a handful of films old in Hindi film industry and she has dabbled with both glamerous and non glamerous roles so far. Did she have to fight any stereotypes during her transition into films? Manushi Chhillar made her acting debut in 2022.
"If someone else has a preconceived notion about where they can fit you, I think instead of focusing your energy on breaking that notion, you just keep doing your job in best possible manner and chase the kind of work that you want to do and everything will fall into place," says the actor, who has was recently seen in the film Maalik, alongside Rajkummar Rao.
Manushi adds, "Whatever people have to say it's their opinion but For me personally when I transitioned into films I didn't feel like I had to do something very different or I had to be a certain way. I dress according to my job. I was a girl doing her job as Ms World and I am a girl doing my job as an actor now."

With her transition into films, she joins the league of several actors like Sushmita Sen, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and others who were former beauty pageant winners and later entered films.
However, Manushi doesn't agree with beauty pageants images of being only about glamour and looking pretty. Breaking the myth, she says, "The first thing is that when people say that world of beauty pageant is of glamour, I do not agree with that. It's that one night in 365 days when a girl is crowned, which you see on stage."
The actor, who won the 2017 Miss World pageant, says, "The whole year what you are doing is not a very glamorous job. I was working with a charity called Beauty With A Purpose and we were constantly traveling to the remotest areas of different parts of the world and that's not a very glamorous job. So technically what I had to do as a Miss World was not just wear a crown, dress up and get photographed. Probably the media covers that one night, which gets most spoken about."

Amaal Mallik was 15 when his ‘defeated' father told him to start earning for family: ‘Iske aage gaadi nahi chalegi meri'

Music composer Amaal Mallik is known for his unfiltered opinions on the way the music industry works today. He's had beef with the likes of T-Series top honcho Bhushan Kumar. But his father, Daboo Malik, also a composer, feels Amaal's forthright streak stems from the fact that he's a self-made man who has also been the family's sole breadwinner for the longest time. 'He's the first elder son to whom the father comes and says, 'Beta, main haar gaya (Son, I've lost)'. Which father does that to his 15-year-old innocent child? Daboo Malik comes home, hugs Amaal, and says, 'Iske aage gaadi chalegi nahi meri. Tu kuchh karega kya? (I can't work beyond this. Will you do something)?' revealed Daboo. In the interview with Vickey Lalwani, he continued, 'He's seen his father fall and lose from when he was 10 to 15 years old. There was a strong emotional upheaval. But nobody sees that. Everybody sees his outburst and critical ways, but that's his character now. He's taken that decision.' Amaal started working at the age of 16, immediately after completing his class 10. 'It's miraculous how Amaal did 2,000 to 3,000 jingles, worked with such big people as a programmer and arranger, he saw exponential technical growth. Armaan (Malik, singer and Amaal's younger brother) was just 10 then,' said Daboo, adding that Amaal helped drastically improve the deteriorating financial situation at home. 'A son like that, who feels he's earned everything with his blood and sweat, suddenly realizes he's getting sidelined and isn't the hero of this household anymore. That his younger brother was becoming the hero instead would have a mental impact on Amaal every day. I think that's a small mistake on part of the parents. But no one was doing it intentionally. We've to be very careful parents,' added Daboo. Amaal started learning music at the age of eight. He learnt piano at the Trinity College of Music, London, specializing in Western Classical, Jazz & Rock. He also learnt Indian classical music informally from his grandfather Sardar Malik. He began working as an assistant composer and background scorer in the Hindi film industry and the advertisement industry. He made his debut as the lead composer in Sohail Khan's 2014 action film Jai Ho. He started singing in films in 2006 with songs like Bum Bum Bhole from Aamir Khan's 2007 directorial debut Taare Zameen Par. He broke through in 2014, the same year as his brother did, with the song Naina in Shashanka Ghosh's 2014 romantic comedy Khoobsurat, which was composed by Amaal. Meanwhile, their father Daboo Malik, the younger brother of composer Anu Malik, started as an actor in 1988. He switched to composing music in 2000s, but hung up his boots by 2014, when his sons gained recognition for their work. The Malik family has been in the news lately for differences with each other. Armaan distanced himself from his family, while Amaal lent him support.

Maalik actor Rajkummar Rao: Don't consider myself film industry's representative

Actor Rajkummar Rao made his acting debut with 2010 film Love Sex Aur Dhokha and completes silver jubilee of his career this year. With several acclaimed films like Aligarh, Shahid, Newton and Stree to his credit, the actor says that instead of trying to boast learnings from the film industry, he focuses on leading a private and peaceful life. Rajkummar Rao made his acting debut with 2010 film Love Sex Aur Dhokha. Ask if there a lesson he has learnt from the industry, he says, ' No. I am very happy with my journey. There is nothing as such that I have learnt.' However, the actor, who recently announced first pregnancy with wife Patralekhaa elaborates, 'I am very a private person and I don't consider myself a representative of the film industry. I am actor, I do my job, I love my job and I come back home and I am Raj. I am living my life very happily, quietly in my house. So, I don't think there is a lesson that I have learnt.' Also Read | Rajkummar Rao on Guru Purnima: My teachers have paid my school fees Recently seen in action entertainer Maalik, Rajkummar follows the mantra of focusing on work and not getting distracted. 'The only thing is that keep doing your job with your head down and keep pushing yourself and work because that is the only thing people will remember you for and people will remember when you are out of this planet earth. Everything else around is just noise,' he says. The 40-year-old actor surprised the audience by taking up a rather violent action role for the first time in Maalik, which joins the league of hyper violent action entertainers seen on the big screen lately. However, the actor disagrees that action is a new flavor of film industry. 'Action has been happening for a very long time now. In Hindi Manmohan Desai sir started making a Amar Akbar Anthony and Yash Chopra ji made Deewara. Its not that suddenly a new genre has opened in cinema. In the recent past some of them have worked really well and some of them have not worked very well. I think the bottom line is that it has to be a good film and it is the film that matters and not any kind of genre,' he says.
