Pacers pull away early behind quality defense against Antetokounmpo, go on to take Game 1 114-97

The Pacers' defense showed out Saturday in Game 1 against the Bucks. Indiana loaded up its defense on Giannis Antetokounmpo, was physical with him from the opening tip, and made him work hard for every bucket. While he still finished with 36 points on 14-of-23 shooting, Antetokounmpo couldn't run free, he never got his teammates going.
The bigger problem for Milwaukee was that Antetokounmpo was the only guy creating or scoring for the Bucks: Kyle Kuzma was 0-of-5 shooting and finished without a point, Bobby Portis and Ryan Rollins each shot 2-of-8, and Kevin Porter Jr. was 2-of-7.
The result was Indiana looking dominant early, leading by 28 points and never being seriously threatened on their way to a 117-98 win, taking a 1-0 series lead.

Pascal Siakam led the Pacers with 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting, while Tyrese Haliburton added 10 points and 12 rebounds in the win.
The key to the game, however, was the Pacers' defense.
'He's a tough cover…' Siakam said of Antetokounmpo. 'He's very good at getting to the paint. He's strong. He's physical. I thought we did a decent job but he did get a couple of easy baskets.'
The Bucks have one big change for Game 2 — Damian Lillard could return from the deep vein Thrombosis that kept him out at the end of the season. Lillard was heard at Game 1, too, trash-talking Haliburton.

That's all just white noise to the Pacers after their win.
Myles Turner had 19 points for the Pacers and Andrew Nembhard added 17.

INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle has agreed to a multi-year contract extension that will keep him in Indianapolis. He was originally hired by the Pacers in the summer of 2021. Since then, the team has steadily improved. Their regular season win total has climbed every year since Carlisle's first, with Indiana finishing 50-32 in 2024-25. They had home court advantage in the playoffs for the first time since 2014 this past season. In the postseason, Carlisle has been excellent during his current stint with the Pacers. They reached the Eastern Conference Finals as the sixth seed in 2024, then the NBA Finals earlier this year. Having a 5-2 record in postseason series is remarkable and has changed the outlook of the franchise. 'Since his return to the Pacers in 2021, Coach Carlisle has been integral to our success, which includes leading us to consecutive Eastern Conference Finals appearances and our first NBA Finals appearance in 25 years,' Pacers President of Basketball Operations Kevin Pritchard said. The contract extension comes two years after Carlisle's last new deal with the Pacers. He received an extension in 2023 after steadily improving the team's fortunes via success and players development – and since then he has continued to win games. Indiana is 97-67 since their head coach last signed an extension. He is the winningest coach in the NBA portion of the Pacers franchise history with 338 victories. No other coach has more than 250 (Frank Vogel), though legendary coach Slick Leonard has 529 in total when counting ABA wins. Wins have always followed Carlisle, who is 11th all time in victories by an NBA head coach and will reach 1,000 this season. He's guided eight teams to 50+ wins in a single campaign, has a Coach of the Year honor under his belt, and has been the head man in the NBA Finals twice – including a championship with Dallas in 2011. (Photo by) Getty Images Winning is priority number one for the Pacers, and Carlisle does that. The traits that have made him the right coach for the franchise in recent years go beyond that, though. His creativity, for example, often sets up his teams for success while also forcing his players to become more versatile. He, along with the play of star guard Tyrese Haliburton, has set an identity for the Pacers, something the team was lacking prior to Carlisle's arrival. They play fast, physically, and in a way that's random to their opponents but comfortable to them. Beyond the strategy, Carlisle has improved tremendously as a player development coach in recent years. He acknowledged an increasing love for one-on-one skill work with young players a few years ago, and that has continued for he and his staff even as wins kept coming for the Pacers. 'Rick has been phenomenal for me,' Pacers forward Aaron Nesmith said in 2023. He has developed tremendously and has been given more playing time with Indiana after being traded to the franchise from the Boston Celtics. He, along with Jalen Smith, Obi Toppin, Jordan Nwora, and Haliburton represent a list of young players that came to the blue and gold from other franchises and improved quickly. James Wiseman and Jay Huff hope to be next, and Carlisle will be guiding them. That doesn't even account for the likes of Andrew Nembhard, Isaiah Jackson, Bennedict Mathurin, Jarace Walker and other Pacers draftees that have grown under the team's current coaching staff. All four of those players have important seasons coming as Indiana enters a season with lowered expectations thanks to Haliburton's injury. Having a coach who can develop those talents further while still racking up wins is exactly what the Pacers should want right now, and they added to Carlisle's deal largely because of those abilities. Torres' journey to 1,000 games The Venezuela native began his climb to the majors in 2013, when he signed as an international free agent with the Chicago Cubs. Five years later, he made his Major League debut during the 2018 season with the New York Yankees and recorded a .271 batting average with 24 home runs and 77 RBI over 123 games. That was a good enough rookie year for Torres to be named an All-Star—a feat he also achieved the following season in 2019, when he upped his average to .278 and set career highs in both homers (38) and RBI (90). After seven years with the Yankees, Torres elected free agency and signed a one-year, $15 million contract with the Detroit Tigers before this season. That proved to be the right choice, as he started his first All-Star game this summer and has helped lead the Tigers to the top of the AL Central with a 73-53 record. Torres has a slash line of .261/.357/.401 this season with 13 homers and 58 RBI through 111 games. The Tigers will certainly need that type of production as they begin a three-game series vs. the Houston Astros—who lead the AL West—at Comerica Park tonight. The two teams haven't faced each other since late April, when the Astros took two out of three games in Houston.

Anthony Richardson's agent laments 'questionable' trust with Colts after decision to bench QB for Daniel Jones
Anthony Richardson got the bad news on Tuesday that he will not be the starting quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts. While speaking with reporters about the team's decision start Daniel Jones instead, Richardson took it in stride. His agent, Deiric Jackson, took a different tack. Jackson spoke with ESPN's Stephen Holder later Tuesday. He told Holder that that the decision constitutes a breakdown in trust with Colts management. "Trust is a big factor, and that is, at best, questionable right now," Jackson said. "Anthony came back and made the improvements in the areas he needed to improve. And by all accounts, he had a great camp." Richardson's response to benching Richardson, meanwhile, had this to say about the decision while speaking with reporters earlier Tuesday in the Colts locker room: "You've got to respect the decision," Richardson said. "They feel like he's a better fit for the team, better fit for the outcome of us winning. So you've just got to respect it and just keep working. "That doesn't undermine any other work I've been putting in, doesn't say that I haven't improved. I'm proud of the improvement I've made." That's a striking contrast in tone from Richardson and his agent as Richardson enters the season as a backup two-plus years after the Colts selected him with the No. 4 pick in the 2023 draft. What does Daniel Jones have to offer? Head coach Shane Steichen announced the decision to reporters early Tuesday. He made clear that the decision to start Jones is not just a Week 1 arrangement. "He's the starting quarterback for the season,' Steichen said. "I don't want to have a short leash on that." There's little to indicate that Jones offers the Colts a shot at any long-term or short-term success of significance. The Giants bailed on Jones in 2024 after five-plus turnover-plagued seasons as their starting quarterback that produced just one winning campaign (9-7-1, 2022). After a 2-8 start to the 2024 season in which Jones posted more turnovers (9) than touchdowns thrown (8), the Giants benched the former first-round pick. They ultimately released him before the season was over. Jones is a known commodity. Despite that, the Colts brought him in as competition for Richardson, whose struggles with injury (19 missed games), accuracy (50.6% completion rate) and leadership have undercut his tremendous upside as one of the most gifted athletes in the NFL. Richardson had plenty to work on this offseason to prove himself, and he and Jackson contend that he showed substantial signs of progress. But Jackson insinuated that a competition in which Jones got the first practice reps over the incumbent Richardson was determined before it started. Regardless of the motivation for the decision, the decision's been made. And it's put Richardson's future with the franchise that drafted him in peril.
