People in Florida neighbourhood stop dinner, grab tools to rescue 4 people in plane crash
Residents in a Miami suburb used an ax, fire extinguisher and garden hose to rescue four people from a small plane that crashed into a tree in yet another mishap near a busy South Florida airport.
'It was nothing short of heroic,' Angelo Castillo, the mayor of Pembroke Pines in Broward County, said Tuesday.
But Castillo is frustrated. He said there have been more than 30 crashes in the past five years on or around North Perry Airport, which serves small planes. A local street is named for 4-year-old Taylor Bishop, one of three people who died when a plane crashed into an SUV in 2021.
'We need better assurances that these planes are not going to keep falling out of the sky," Castillo said. "The airport was a dairy farm before World War II. Now it's the busiest general aviation airport in Florida. But within a five-mile radius, there are approximately half a million people."
A pilot and three passengers were approaching the airport in a Cessna T337G when the aircraft crashed into a tree in the Pines Village neighborhood around 8 p.m. Sunday, authorities said.
'Residents put their dinner forks down to get out there,' Castillo said. 'Some had garden hoses to put the fire out. There were cuts and bruises, but all four survived.'
Giovanna Hanley said the plane crashed near her mother's house where she was staying.
'Within seconds, my hero Father in Law was breaking glass and pulling out the injured. ... This is personal. This is angering. This is unacceptable,' Hanley said on Facebook, referring to plane crashes.
An email seeking comment from North Perry Airport was not immediately answered Tuesday. The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.
Castillo, meanwhile, wants an independent investigation of local air safety.
'People are up in arms, and I can't blame them,' he said.

Pilot hurt after small plane crashes south of Stony Plain
A pilot suffered minor injuries after his plane crashed in a field southwest of Edmonton on Tuesday. The pilot of a small plane was injured after he crashed and landed upside down on Tuesday south of Stony Plain near the North Saskatchewan River. RCMP told CTV News Edmonton the plane crashed near Range Road 12 and Township Road 505. The pilot was landing at an air strip 20 kilometres south of the town when he clipped a barbed wire fence, flipping the plane over, police said. RCMP responded to a beacon, Cpl. Troy Savinkoff said Tuesday afternoon. Officers in a police helicopter spotted the crashed plane, he said. The pilot suffered minor injuries and didn't need to be taken to hospital after being cleared by paramedics. Stony Plain is 35 kilometres west of Edmonton.

Man killed in southern Manitoba plane crash remembered by friends as 'extremely knowledgeable' pilot
Social Sharing Friends of a man killed when his single-engine plane crashed in Manitoba field on Saturday say he was a knowledgeable and passionate pilot who had just earned his recreational pilot licence earlier this spring. On Sunday, the Winnipeg chapter of the Experimental Aviation Association posted a statement on Facebook mourning the loss of member Peter Toth. Chapter president James Slade said Toth was one of the group's "most active members," who was always keen to share his aircraft expertise and passion for small planes, including on his "Challenger 2 Aircraft Adventures" page on YouTube. "He was just delightful to be around because he was extremely knowledgeable. You could ask him about virtually any topic and he would have something to say about it — and he was informed on it as well." Slade said Toth was thrilled to receive his recreational flying permit and was working toward his float rating to fly seaplanes. "He completed the recreational permit and he just got that this spring. He was so proud to see that he had completed the coursework and the flight training for it." Slade said Toth was meticulous when it came to working on planes, helping others while fixing up his own aircraft. "He would always be the one I would ask to double check my work if we was around," Slade said. "He was always very conscious about getting things done right." Slade confirmed that it was Toth's Quad City Challenger II ultralight aircraft that crashed in a field near Dugald, Man., on Saturday morning. Slade said Toth's plane was scheduled to fly that day and his plane was missing from the hangar. The body of a man was recovered from the plane, RCMP said in a news release on Sunday. Witness Darrin Bonnett was driving toward Winnipeg on Highway 15 when he saw the plane plummet. "Just out of the corner of my eye, I saw something coming down from the sky. As I looked over, there was what appeared to be an aircraft spiralling straight down towards the ground," he said. Bonnett, who's trained as an emergency medical responder, said he pulled over to call 911 and stayed on the line with the dispatcher as he jumped out of his vehicle and headed to the crash site. He described the scene as "carnage." "Had I not seen it come down from the sky, I would not have assumed it was an airplane from the wreckage that I saw. It was just a twisted wreck," Bonnet said.

2 kids killed at Miami sailing camp after barge collides with their boat, authorities say

All six people on the sailing boat were pulled from the water by responders, and four kids were rushed to a nearby hospital where two were pronounced dead upon arrival, said Petty Officer 3rd Class Nicholas Strasburg, a spokesperson for the U.S. Coast Guard. The six — one adult and five kids — were in their last week of the sailing camp for kids from 7 to 15 years old, according to the Miami Yacht Club. 'The entire MYC family is devastated by this terrible tragedy,' said Emily Copeland, the commodore of the yacht club, in a statement. Two of the six who were rescued were in 'good condition,' Strasburg said. Last year, there were over 550 deaths in recreational boating, of which 43 were caused by vessels crashing into each other, according to Coast Guard statistics. The boats collided near Star Island, which runs between Miami Beach and Miami in Biscayne Bay, said Arielle Callender, a regional spokesperson for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, in a statement. Local television stations showed first responders, some in scuba diving gear, in boats around what appears to be a barge. The Coast Guard is investigating the crash.
