Rockford University raises awareness about sexual assault on Denim Day
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford University raised awareness about sexual assault and advocated for survivors on Denim Day.
Denim Day is a campaign that started in 1999 after the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction, claiming the victim must have helped her attacker remove her tight jeans, implying consent.
Many women wore jeans the next day to show solidarity.
Rockford University students strung up shirts on a clothesline along with survivors' stories on campus.
One student emphasized the importance of listening to victims and eliminating assumptions around sexual violence.
'I think it's a stigma to think that a man can not be a victim when he can be. Or that a child cannot be a victim because they're too innocent, or that an older person can't be a victim because they're not attractive,' said Sandy Ruiz. I think a lot of these stigmas and stereotypes are still very much prevalent, so I think that's the first place that we need to go, is to have these different levels of people be representatives of sexual assault.'
The school hosted a celebration for its women's flag football team in tandem with Denim Day.

Police: Rockford man robs CVS, attacks officers
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford Police arrested Zamareyo Gibson, 20, for robbing a CVS, among other charges. On June 4, around 1 a.m., officers were called to the CVS Pharmacy on South Alpine Street for reports of a suspect who stole $260 out of a register. The cashier told authorities he feared he was going to be attacked by Gibson, so he opened the register for the suspect. Soon after, officials tracked down Gibson's blue Ford Expedition and took him into custody at North Horseman and West Jefferson Streets. Police found loose cash, rolled coins and multiple books of stamps. Gibson damaged the inside of the squad car he was transported in, causing a water leak, according to court records. He also kicked and spat on multiple officers when he was taken to jail, authorities reported. Police: Rockford man injures officer during weapons arrest
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford Police arrested Pierre Watson, 31, for weapons possession by a felon, among other charges. On June 1, around 1:41 a.m., officers pulled over Watson's Chevrolet Monte Carlo when he did not use a turn signal, according to court records. Authorities determined Watson had a suspended driver's license in Illinois. When officials approached the car, they could smell cannabis and saw an open bottle of Hennessy. The suspect was taken into custody but attempted to run away, causing an officer to be injured. Police searched the vehicle and found a loaded pistol. Watson was previously convicted of intending to deliver controlled substances in 2017 and 2020. He is charged with possession of a firearm without a FOID, transporting an open alcohol container, unlawful possession of cannabis, driving on a suspended license, driving an uninsured vehicle, improper turn signal use, possession of a weapon by a felon, possession of a firearm by a repeat felon, resisting an officer. Federal budget cuts threaten essential programs in Rockford, mayor says
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara emphasized concerns regarding how federal budget cuts will affect the city at Monday's 'State of the City' address. The annual address was given in City Council chambers, where McNamara said, 'Federal funding pauses, shifts in priorities, and changes in grant programs will not only impact our local government, but it will impact our nonprofits, our businesses, and many, many residents who rely on those funds.' 'So let me be clear. If the federal government does cut programs such as Headstart, LIHEAP and housing programs, the city simply cannot cover. The costs in our community will suffer. our residents, Rockfordians will suffer,' he added. McNamara said the city continues to see growth in several areas, including population, housing, and property values. 'Property values have grown by more than 50%, and they are at our city's highest point in our history. And at the same time, property values are up. Our property tax rate is the lowest it's been since 1984. We are actually we are the only major taxing body in Winnebago County that has actually reduced its property tax levy over the last ten years.
