Cops nab second suspect linked to Bachok acid attack

KOTA BHARU : Police have arrested a man in connection with the acid attack on a spa owner in Beris Kubur Besar, Bachok, last Saturday.
Bachok district police chief Ismail Jamaluddin said the suspect was arrested at 4pm yesterday at a rubber factory in Kuala Krai.
He said the 45-year-old man was detained to assist in investigations under Section 326 of the Penal Code
'Police will apply for a remand order for the suspect at the magistrates' court today to facilitate further investigations,' he told Bernama when contacted today.
Yesterday, Bernama reported that a female suspect had been arrested at the same factory on suspicion of being involved in the incident.
Kelantan police chief Yusoff Mamat said the 38-year-old woman was arrested at 4pm on Wednesday.
Last Saturday, a female trader was doused with a liquid believed to be acid by an unknown individual in an incident near a convenience store in Beris Kubur Besar, Tawang, near Bachok.
The attack left the victim with severe burns on her shoulder, back, arms and legs. However, she is currently reported to be in stable condition and is receiving treatment at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM), Kubang Kerian.

GEORGE TOWN : Former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng has warned the public about a fake video circulating online that uses artificial intelligence to mimic his voice and image in an apparent investment scam. Lim, who is also the Air Putih assemblyman, said the video falsely shows him endorsing an investment scheme. He said the video is fake and generated using AI. 'I want to be absolutely clear, I have never asked anyone to invest in anything. I'm not in business; I'm in politics,' he said at an event in Air Putih today. The manipulated video is believed to be based on an interview Lim gave over a decade ago. The original recording was in English, but the fake version is in Mandarin. 'That alone is a red flag,' Lim said, noting that the other speaker in the video, Penang Institute executive director Ooi Kee Beng, does not speak Mandarin. 'They took an old clip, altered it to look new, and changed the language.' Lim said the matter had been reported to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission. He urged the public not to believe unsolicited investment messages or videos circulating on platforms like WhatsApp. Lim said this case highlights the urgent need for public education on AI-generated deepfakes and online scams. He said scammers are intentionally using trusted public figures to deceive victims as this is at least the fifth time digitally altered videos of him have been produced. 'The early attempts were clearly fake, but this one is more convincing. It's dangerous, especially for the elderly or those who trust me as a public figure,' he said. 'They (scammers) exploit public trust. That's why I need to speak up, to stop people from falling for these scams. 'Always verify with official sources. Refer to my verified statements. I will never ask anyone to invest in anything.'

Mother's grief unbearable as she identifies son lost in Tanjung Harapan boat tragedy
SHAH ALAM, June 8 — The mother of a victim was overwhelmed and wept when she saw at her dead son's face during the identification process at the Forensic Unit, Shah Alam Hospital, here following the discovery of the bodies of her son and his wife who were involved in a boat capsize in the waters of Tanjung Harapan, Port Klang, near here, last Friday. The bodies of Gan Hon Tat, 32, and Careen Man, 29, were found floating at 7.45 am this morning, about 0.1 nautical mile from the National Hydrographic Centre, North Port, Port Klang. A Bernama observation found that Chan Pei Pei, 60, wailed in grief as she was escorted out of the autopsy room by her husband before being calmed down by family members in the lobby of the Forensic Unit. However, the victim's family members refused to be interviewed and only said that they expected the autopsy process to be completed by 4 pm this afternoon. Earlier, Gan's mother and father and a man believed to be Careen's brother, appeared calm before being allowed in for the body identification process around noon. The couple from Klang Utama was among six individuals involved in the boat capsizing incident at about 5 pm on Friday. Factory worker dies after motorcycle hits dog on Kampar road
KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 — A factory worker died after losing control of his motorcycle when he collided with a dog crossing the road on Jalan Malim Nawar-Kota Baru in Kampar, Perak this morning. The incident occurred at approximately 7:35am, claiming the life of 42-year-old Mohd Safaril Mohamed Anuar, who was pronounced dead at the scene due to severe injuries. Kampar District Police Chief Superintendent Mohamad Nazri Daud said Mohd Safaril was riding a Honda EX5 motorcycle from his home in Perumahan Awam 2, Malim Nawar, en route to his workplace in Kota Baru. 'Upon reaching the location, a dog suddenly crossed the road from left to right. 'The victim was unable to avoid the animal, resulting in a collision that caused him to lose control,' he told Sinar Harian. Preliminary investigations confirmed no other vehicles were involved, and no foul play was suspected. Inspection of the motorcycle revealed damage to the front mudguard and the left side coverset. The victim's body was transported to Kampar Hospital, and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
