UP govt plans ‘flat-like' factory in Greater Noida for MSMEs
Aiming to boost the medium and small scale (MSME) industries in the state, the UP government has decided to develop a flat-like ('flatted') factory space in Greater Noida with an estimated expenditure of Rs 125 crore. The factory space will be developed by Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) in Sector 28 of Greater Noida. Officials said that while the initial survey and preparations of the master plan are in process, the target is to get the project ready within two years. 'As per the plan, the idea is to provide the state-of-the-art infrastructure to MSME units in a shared complex, which would reduce their cost of production and other input costs as well. It will be provided as a fully equipped unit by the YEIDA with all the essential facilities, so that the units can start production and operations smoothly,' an official said. Officials said that with UP already having a large MSME base, this project would help not only achieve economic targets by bringing in new investment but would also help general employment opportunities. 'The project will be on EPC model — Engineering, Procurement, and Construction — with a three-year defect liability period,' the official added. The 'flatted' factory will have multi-storeys — a basement, a ground floor, and three floors that will all cover an area of over 38,665 square metres. As per the project plan, along with the main multi-storied building, the government will also develop a complex for any future needs. 'The flatted factory will also have internal water supply, electricity, fire safety systems, elevators, as well as HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), meeting the requirement of the MSMEs,' the official said. Further, the government would also provide pre-installed security features like CCTV, access control, and other electronic systems, the official added. While the design has been proposed to follow green building standards, the complex is also proposed to have 24 and 30-meter-wide roads connectivity linking it to the highway for ease of transportation of the goods. Officials said the government would also provide boundary walls, gates, guard rooms, internal roads, parking, drainage, sewage, water supply, plumbing pumps, fire safety systems, and landscaping, which would help ease the setting up of MSME units and with a fast pace, thereby reducing other costs.

India poised to benefit from FTAs, says RAI CEO Kumar Rajagopalan
Singapore, Jun 8 (PTI) India has emerged as a 'great place" to use the advantages accruing from Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), a senior retail industry official said as he highlighted the success of Make in India programme. 'We are among the most attractive markets, with a growing young population that makes us one of the world's largest consumer markets with insatiable demand for the best in the world," said Retailers Association of India (RAI) CEO Kumar Rajagopalan at an event here. FTAs will also give Indians access to items that get manufactured abroad at a more convenient pricing, he added. But he was also quick to dismiss notions of dumping cheap inferior goods into the Indian market, pointing out that the country has created laws that can protect against such trade-damaging practices, and that can be challenged at the World Trade Organization. According to Kumar, a trade veteran of 40 decades, a full-fledged quality control checking system is in place to ensure Indian consumers are getting the best products as imports of edibles is set to increase following the signing of more and more FTAs by the Indian government in an endeavour to reach out the global markets. India has always imported consumer products from around the world but in recent years with the economic prosperity momentum picking up, the country has become 'more and more attractive as a consumer-driven market", given the young population with rising income seeking the best quality, cost-effective, long-lasting and appealing products, Kumar pointed out. FTAs are increasing India's bilateral trade globally, covering value-added high-end and heavy-duty industrial products to edibles such as soybeans, cheeses, vines and beverages. RAI leads about 2,500 members, mostly retailers at national level, with an annual business volume of about USD 900 billion, that is set to grow at 10 per cent annually. Kumar also sees competition from world-class products for Make in India. 'Imports and exports will create a competitive landscape and we will see further upgrades in manufacturing processes within India to make globally-rated products be it hardware, software and or edibles." India, he said, produces agri and non-agri products for consumers as well as industrial plants for the world. He said that 85 per cent of the 7,00,000 stores in India are still operating in traditional formats, ranging from the corner shop Kiraana to single store supplying everything in the range of garments and edibles, competing with mega modern-day fast-pace trading department stores, online and offline supply chain operators. Fast and quick-commerce have reduced delivery time to 10 minutes while e-commerce and online payments have made retailing business easier and prompt, he observed. A latest example of India made products from design to garment production is Mumbai-headquartered 'Fynd", an artificial intelligence-driven commerce platform that is serving the Indian market as well as the Middle East and Africa markets. NRF 2025 had 9,500 trade visitors from over 72 countries, alongside participation from 240 exhibitors and sponsors, and 150 conference speakers. PTI GS ANU First Published: June 08, 2025, 17:15 IST

Women are now key drivers of progress in India: FM Nirmala Sitharaman
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday highlighted that in the last 11 years, women have emerged as key drivers of progress in the country, with the Narendra Modi government launching various schemes to empower Nari Shakti. Highlighting '11 years of Sashakt Nari', the Finance Minister said that under the PM Jan Dhan Yojna, the world's largest financial inclusion scheme, 55.7 per cent of accounts were held by women, which reflected their empowerment at the grassroots level. She further pointed out that women now account for 68 per cent of the MUDRA loan beneficiaries nationwide. These loans have enabled lakhs of women to become entrepreneurs and pursue their dreams independently. Apart from this, 74 per cent of those getting benefits under the Start-Up India entrepreneurs scheme are also women. Besides, 73 per cent of houses under the PMAY (Gramin) scheme for the poor are owned by women, she said. The Finance Minister also mentioned that 10 crore LPG connections have been given to poor women under the Ujjwala Yojana. These have come as a big boon for them, making their life easier with accompanying health benefits. They have been freed from the harmful smoke of wood and other fuels, such as cow dung, that were used for cooking earlier. The Jan Dhan scheme has been a huge success in financial inclusion, as the average bank balance per account in March 2015 was Rs 1,065, which has now increased to Rs 4,352. Around 80 per cent of the accounts are active, she added. As many as 66.6 per cent of Jan Dhan accounts have been opened in rural and semi-urban areas, and 29.56 crore (55.7 per cent) belong to women account holders. These accounts are used on a large scale. People are also depositing money in them. However, this scheme allows zero balance accounts, and only 8.4 per cent of the accounts have zero balance. When the Modi government first came to power about 10 years ago, it set a target of providing financial and banking services to every citizen. For this, zero balance bank accounts were opened in the banks for the poorest of the poor under 'Pradhanmantri Jan Dhan Yojana' launched on August 28, 2014.
