Nebraska baseball blows out Maryland 21-5 in seven innings to take conference series
Nebraska (21-23, 9-12) and Maryland (20-25, 6-15) clashed in its conference series finale on Sunday afternoon. The Huskers took the series in a commanding fashion, dominating the Terrapins 21-5 in seven innings.
Nebraska struck big early on, starting the game off with six runs in the first inning. The Huskers built their lead to 11-0 before Maryland scored in the fourth.
The Terrapins cut Nebraska's lead nearly in half in the fourth, making it 11-5. But the Huskers shut down any comeback attempts, scoring five runs in the following inning. The Huskers added five more runs across the final two innings, ending the game in the seventh due to the run-rule.
Nebraska delivered 19 hits on the day, while Maryland finished with five. This win is the Huskers' first 20-plus run game since 2019.
Gabe Swansen led Nebraska in the win, driving in seven RBIs after going 4-for-5 at the plate. He hit two doubles and a grand slam. He's also the first Husker with seven RBI in a game since Josh Scheffert in 2012.
Joshua Overbeek hit 3-for-5 for a season-high five RBIs. Dylan Carey finished 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Cayden Brumbaugh hit 2-for-3, for one RBI which included a solo home run, and scored a team-high four runs.
Hogan Helligso finished 2-for-5 with an RBI. Hayden Lewis, Max Buettenback, Case Sanderson, Tyler Stone and Devin Nunez all delivered one hit and one RBI apiece.
Jackson Brockett (2-3) got the win at the mound after pitching the first 5.0 innings. Brockett struck out four batters allowing five runs on four hits and two walks. Caleb Clark and Gavin Blachowicz each pitched one inning and threw one strikeout after Brockett, shutting down the Terrapins.
Nebraska returns home to host Kansas State in a midweek matchup on Tuesday night. The first pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. CT on Big Ten Networks.

With his Monday appearance, all indications are he'll be present and accounted for when roll is called Tuesday. Parsons's arrival to start the work week shouldn't come as a surprise, though, since the four-time Pro Bowler had promised as much to head coach Brian Schottenheimer just hours before. Taking part in a recent TikTok trend, the 26-year-old phoned Schottenheimer over the weekend to say "good night." During that call, Parsons told his coach, "Just checking in on you, meant to say good night, hope the fam is well, see you Monday, excited about next week." The conversation turned into a quick impromptu pep talk, with Schottenheimer reassuring Parsons that the contract "is going to get worked out" and reminding him, "We're building something special, and you're going to be a huge part of it." Parsons explained to fans last week that he's never missed a mandatory minicamp, and will be continuing that streak this offseason as he learns a new playbook under first-year defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus. "I'm preparing as if I will be on the field the first week of camp!" Parsons wrote on social media. That part of his post does have some wondering if the former first-round draft pick would hold out of training camp without a contract, and it certainly offers a reminder that he may not be a full-go participant in minicamp, so as to not risk an injury with a high-dollar contract negotiation up in the air. But Parsons is in the building on Monday, handling his business and making it seem like he'll be back in the building to do so again on Tuesday. So he's certainly around for whenever the Cowboys front office decides to meet him halfway and do some business of their own. Will Caitlin Clark play Tuesday? Indiana Fever provide injury update WNBA and Indiana Fever fans are anxiously awaiting the return of superstar Caitlin Clark. Clark has been sidelined with a left quadriceps injury since the Fever's May 24 contest against the New York Liberty. Clark has missed each of Indiana's past four contests as she works her way back from the injury. On Monday, Fever head coach Stephanie White provided an update on the injury status of Clark, ruling out the Fever star for Indiana's contest at Atlanta on Tuesday night. "Not for tomorrow," White said of Clark's availability against the Dream. "No. I think for us, we've got to work both her and Sophie back into are they in basketball condition? What does it mean to go live? It's one thing to do some shooting drills. It's another thing to get out there on the floor, get back into movement patterns, rhythm, timing. "And so that's what part of picking and choosing the things that they can be in in practice, so that we can see their progression. Both of them, being out for long periods of time, you've got to work your way back into being game ready." Coach White was asked if Clark had been cleared to return to basketball activities. "I don't know if cleared is the right word. We're ready to start ramping back up. It's completely different when you're just doing 1-on-1 workouts and when you're out there in 5-on-5, getting up and down the floor, moving laterally. So, she's been allowed to do some practicing. Not everything. And we're going to be smart and we're going to be cautious and we're going to play the long game and work her back in very intentionally," White said. Clark is is currently averaging 19.0 points, 9.3 assists, 6.0 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game on 40.3% field goal shooting, 31.4% from 3-point range and 75.0% from the free-throw line. The second-year pro opened the season with the third triple-double of her career and has two more double-doubles, including Clark's 18 points and 10 assists against the reigning WNBA champion Liberty in her final game before injury. The Fever are 2-2 minus Clark and have won both of their past two contests. Indiana is 4-4 on the season. After its date at Atlanta, Indiana hosts the Liberty again on Saturday, June 14. Piolo joins Iowa after most recently being the Atlanta Falcons' assistant general manager from 2014-2019. Scott Pioli brings a mountain of experience in his career, as he has been in the NFL since 1992 in a multitude of roles, from scouting to player personnel to the front office. Before that, Pioli coached in college from 1988 to 1991 with stops at Syracuse and Murray State. A three-time Super Bowl champion in the NFL, Scott Pioli has been named the PWFA Executive of the Year three times (2003, 2007, 2010) and the Sporting News NFL Executive of the Year twice (2003, 2004).
