Angry Marc Marquez slams critics questioning brother Alex's racing hunger

Straits Times29-06-2025
ASSEN, Netherlands - Ducati's Marc Marquez launched a spirited defence of his younger brother Alex on Sunday, condemning critics who have questioned whether his sibling is deliberately avoiding challenging him for victories in sprints and races this season.
Marc, who has dominated the season with 15 victories across sprints and Sunday races, bristled when discussing social media comments and journalists' questions suggesting his brother might be holding back during their frequent one-two finishes.
Alex has finished second 14 times and he came in for criticism for not being aggressive enough to overtake his older brother, with the Gresini Racing rider sitting 68 points behind Marc.
"I was a bit angry because people must respect the other riders. Yesterday, many people I saw on social media and even some journalists asked me and told me that 'No, your brother is not attacking you as the others'," Marquez told TNT Sports.
"People started to say that and I was angry at that time because Alex is defending his colours, he has the ambition, for that reason he's second in the championship, because he's riding in a very good way.
"He's trying to manage his situation. But as we see today, another rider with another brand, with another nationality wanted to win, but he can't attack me, because if the front rider defends well, nobody can attack you."
Alex did not score points at the Dutch Grand Prix race on Sunday following a crash where he broke his hand, which requires surgery.
To drive the point home, Marc described how Aprilia's Marco Bezzecchi finished second behind him at Sunday's race at Assen despite the Italian trying his very best to overtake him, eventually finishing less than a second behind the Ducati rider.
"And today Marco Bezzechi, why didn't he attack me? I was defending and I know that my weak point was at turn 11-12, that is the fastest area, it's a very narrow circuit and if you defend there, nobody can attack me," Marc added.
"So I was defending there, just trying to attack on the brake points.
"But I just want to say that people must respect the other riders and just enjoy the show. Everybody is defending his colours and everybody wants to win."
Victory in the sprint and race meant more to Marc after a bruising practice session on Friday when he crashed twice.
"Adrenaline is the best painkiller that exists, this is always my medicine," he said.
"But now I will rest for two or three days to recover, especially the ribs, the finger, the arm -- the whole body. Big crashes are not the same (at) 20 years old as (when you are) 32!" REUTERS

Arsenal beat Newcastle in five-goal thriller to bring Singapore Festival of Football to a close

SINGAPORE – Some 38,720 fans were treated to a spectacle between English Premier League sides Arsenal and Newcastle United at the National Stadium on July 27, which saw the star turn of 15-year-old Max Dowman as the Gunners won 3-2. The game wrapped up the 2025 Singapore Festival of Football, which also featured a game between Arsenal and Italian giants AC Milan on July 23, with the London side winning 1-0. The crowd on July 27 was a marked improvement from the 22,813 that turned up for the first game, although there were still swathes of empty seats visible. Those who did turn up were treated to an unveiling of new Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres. The Swede, who signed for a reported £55 million (S$94 million), had been announced by the Gunners on July 26, and received rapturous applause from the Arsenal supporters as he strolled out onto the pitch at Kallang in an Arsenal kit with the number 14 emblazoned on the back of his jersey. The action on the pitch, too, was an upgrade from the somewhat plodding football that was on display at times in the Arsenal-Milan game. Newcastle's own new £55 million recruit Anthony Elanga opened the scoring in the sixth minute, but Arsenal responded with quickfire double in the 33rd and 35th minutes through Mikel Merino and an own goal from young Newcastle defender Alex Murphy. Arsenal striker Kai Havertz, perhaps playing with a point to prove, created both goals. Jacob Murphy equalised for Newcastle in the second half with a low shot from outside the box, before Dowman, who had been Arsenal's brightest spark after coming on as a substitute in the 60th minute, earned a penalty after he was fouled by Joelinton, following a mesmerising run into the box. Arsenal skipper Martin Odegaard coolly converted the spot-kick, which proved to be the winner, in the 84th minute. Before this match, the Gunners last came to Singapore in 2018 for the International Champions Cup, where they faced Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid. The Magpies, meanwhile, last visited Singapore in since 1996, when a side featuring Faustino Asprilla, David Ginola and Les Ferdinand thumped an S-League All-Stars team 5-0 in front of 41,000 fans at the old National Stadium. The 2025 Singapore Festival of Football is the first instalment in a five-year partnership between promoters TEG Sport and the Singapore Tourism Board that will also see top European clubs play in Singapore in 2027 and 2029. Hamilton to start from the pit lane in Belgium

SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium - Lewis Hamilton will start Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix from the pit lane with a new power unit after qualifying only 16th, Ferrari said. The seven-times Formula One world champion won at Spa with Mercedes last year but has had a nightmare so far, qualifying 18th in Friday's sprint qualifying and finishing 15th in Saturday's 100km race. Hamilton has won five times in Belgium and has been on the podium in all but two of the races he has finished at the longest circuit on the calendar. The Briton, who moved to the Italian team in January and has yet to stand on the podium for them, apologised to Ferrari on Saturday for a performance he said was unacceptable. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso and Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli will also start from the pit lane after those teams also changed engine components. Sunday's race is set to be wet. The Formula Two feature race started behind the safety car while the Formula Three race was cancelled entirely due to the conditions. REUTERS

Arsenal's new signing Viktor Gyokeres to be presented to the crowd before Newcastle game

Find out what's new on ST website and app. Arsenal announced on July 26 that they had signed Gyokeres from Sporting on a five-year deal. SINGAPORE – Arsenal fans in Singapore will be the first to get an in-person look at their latest signing Viktor Gyokeres in a Gunners shirt, as the Swedish striker will be unveiled just before his new club's pre-season friendly against Newcastle United at the National Stadium on July 27. In a media statement, the club said that the 27-year-old 'will be in the house to watch his new teammates in tonight's fixture against Newcastle United at (the) National Stadium'. The club encouraged supporters to be in their seats 30 minutes before the 7.30pm kick-off to see 'our number 14 being unveiled to the crowd'. The match against League Cup holders Newcastle will be the Gunners' second pre-season match. On July 23, the Gunners secured a 1-0 victory over Italian giants AC Milan at the National Stadium which saw them kick off the 2025 Singapore Festival of Football series on a winning note. Arsenal announced on July 26 that they had signed Gyokeres from Sporting on a five-year deal. While financial details of the transfer were not disclosed, British media reported Arsenal agreed to pay £55 million (S$94 million) up front plus around £8 million in add-ons. 'We're absolutely delighted to welcome Viktor Gyokeres to the club,' manager Mikel Arteta said in a club statement. Gyokeres has been one of Europe's most in-demand strikers this summer and was identified as Arsenal's preferred centre-forward target. This was after he helped Sporting win the league and the Portuguese Cup last season, when he scored 54 goals in 52 games in all competitions, including a hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League. Arsenal finished second in the Premier League for a third consecutive campaign in the 2024-25 season, 10 points behind champions Liverpool with 17 fewer goals scored.
