Wynne Evans says Strictly controversy took him into ‘darkest spot' of his life
The Welsh tenor, 53, known for the GoCompare insurance advertisements, competed in the recent series of the BBC dancing programme alongside professional Katya Jones. Evans recently announced that he had been dropped by the BBC and will no longer present on BBC Radio Wales following an apology saying that he used 'inappropriate language' during the launch of the Strictly Come Dancing tour. The apology came after the Mail On Sunday reported in January that he aimed a sexual joke at one of the other professional dancers, Janette Manrara. Speaking on ITV's This Morning, he claimed the story was taken out of context and that he was talking to fellow contestant, EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick, who he gave the nickname 'old spit roast boy' to. He said: 'I used to call him this because he could contort his legs over his head. 'I didn't know there was a reporter still there, recording, apparently, on their phone. 'Even though I'm looking at Jamie, they claim that I'm directing this word at Janette. And it's totally been taken out of context. 'When I saw the narrative in the newspaper, I was just shocked and horrified.' He added that the nickname was 'unsuitable' and 'inappropriate' and claims that he was misrepresented. This comes after Borthwick was suspended from the BBC when a video emerged of the actor using a disabled slur on the set of the dance programme. Evans added that he never approved of the statement that was issued by the BBC in January where he apologised for making an 'inappropriate and unacceptable' comment. He said: 'They didn't run it by me. They sent it off to the newspaper. They printed that as my apology. And, of course, then it looks like I validated the story.' A BBC spokesperson said: 'The apology issued on Wynne's behalf by the Strictly Come Dancing Tour PR representative on Saturday January 25 was fully approved by Wynne.' While recounting the controversy, he got visibly emotional and said that he wanted to end his life. He said: 'I've had clinical depression since 2016, diagnosed. It took me into the darkest spot of my life. 'I was at my lowest ebb. I wanted to end my life. I would have if I hadn't been surrounded by people. 'At one point one of the newspapers was so relentless, I remember saying to my girlfriend, I have to kill myself, I have to, because this is what they want.' He added that he was under the crisis team for a month with his family, friends and girlfriend on a rota to be with him 24 hours a day. Overnight, Evans has also shared in an Instagram post that he is engaged to his girlfriend Liz Brookes, saying that he is feeling 'very lucky' after proposing in Morocco.

Strictly ‘wasn't safe for me', claims Wynne Evans
Wynne Evans, the Welsh opera singer, has claimed that Strictly Come Dancing was not a 'safe environment' for him. The 53-year-old, also known for starring in advertisements for GoCompare, made the claim after being dropped as a presenter by BBC Radio Wales following his use of 'inappropriate' language during the launch of the television competition's live tour. Evans apologised after The Mail on Sunday obtained a video it alleged showed him saying a lewd sexual term to Janette Manrara, a presenter and professional dancer, during a photocall in Birmingham in January. He said afterwards: 'I am deeply sorry for the pain my inappropriate actions have caused, and plan to take this time for self-reflection.' The singer competed in the most recent series of Strictly alongside Katya Jones, a professional dancer on the popular programme. However, speaking on ITV's This Morning on Wednesday, the singer said he would not take part in the show again if had the choice and claimed: 'I don't think it was a safe environment for me to do Strictly.' He also alleged the BBC had not contacted him since he was suspended and that he was not made aware of any support available to him – a claim denied by the corporation.

Famous actress trades in BAFTAs for bar work in tiny Highland village
Award-winning actress and writer Ruth Jones has been swapping showbiz for seafood and serenity in the Scottish Highlands. The Welsh actress – best known for writing, creating and starring in Gavin and Stacey alongside James Corden – has become a familiar face in the small fishing village of Lochinver. In between award-winning turns on stage and screen, Jones leads a slightly quieter life at her second home in Lochinver. The actress co-owns the village's popular seafood restaurant Peet's, alongside her husband David Peet. During her frequent visits to the village, the actress has been spotted trading BAFTAs for bar work at Peet's. Many a customer has found themselves being served food and drinks by the star. Jones and her husband, a television producer, opened the restaurant in 2014. They did so a year after buying a holiday home in the village, having fallen in love with the area. The restaurant has proved popular with locals and tourists alike, serving freshly caught seafood and other local produce. Although Jones still lives mainly in Cardiff, it is believed she rarely goes more than a few months without visiting her Highland escape. Their holiday home, bought in 2013 for £240,000, sits in a secluded bay with views of Mount Suilven. Jones's husband David is said to be a more frequent visitor, to check in on the bustling local restaurant. The couple married in 1999 after meeting at BBC Wales and have worked together several times. They notably collaborated on Sky series Stella, in which Jones played the lead role. Jones has also written several bestselling novels. She was awarded an MBE in 2014 for her contributions to entertainment. Aside from Gavin and Stacey, she has also appeared in hit television shows Fat Friends and Little Britain. Despite her fame, Jones is regularly spotted out and about in the tranquil Highland town. She is also an avid supporter of the RNLI and has publicly praised the Lochinver crew for their hard work. Last month the actress was honoured with a BAFTA award for best female performance in a comedy category for playing Nessa in Gavin and Stacey: The Finale.
