Pune: Political parties in Pimpri Chinchwad began preparations for the civic poll a day after state govt announced a four-member ward system for the election.
City units of political parties held meetings with their workers, with BJP expressing confidence in winning the poll under the new ward system.
Opposition parties, however, criticized govt for changing the three-member ward system, for which a draft was announced during MVA govt in 2022, for advantage.
BJP's Pimpri Chinchwad unit president Shatrughna Kate said, "We had 77 elected corporators in 2017. Five independent corporators also sided with us, taking the total to 82. Considering this number, we are confident of winning the civic poll even without an alliance.
The party has strong local leaders in each ward and the four-member system will benefit us."
He said though party workers wanted to contest solo, the final decision would be taken by the state leadership.
A senior official from PCMC's election department told TOI that there would be no changes in the total number of wards and elected members. The civic body will have 128 corporators from 32 wards, the official said.
Tushar Kamthe, the city president of NCP (SP), said, "The announcement of four-member ward system shows that BJP is not confident.
Else, they would have stuck to the three-member ward announced during MVA govt."
Kamthe said party chief Sharad Pawar was personally monitoring preparations in Pimpri Chinchwad and would hold a meeting with the workers on June 17. "The party will give opportunity to new faces. We are prepared to contest solo or in alliance," he said.
Experts said the four-member ward system was likely to cause seat-sharing issues if MVA or Mahayuti decided to contest in alliance.
Sanjog Waghere, the city chief of Shiv Sena (UBT), said there should have been a three or two-member ward system for the benefit of residents. "There are many citizens' issues that have remained unaddressed over the last few years, including when BJP was in office at PCMC. And the situation remained unchanged due to the four-member ward system," he said.
Waghere said they already held a meeting with party workers for Bhosari constituency and more meetings were scheduled for Pimpri and Chinchwad constituencies on June 15.

MHA nod awaited for renaming Talkatora Stadium, says Minister

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is awaiting clearance from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for changing the name of Talkatora Indoor Stadium to Maharishi Valmiki Stadium and will be passed in the next council meeting once it is approved, Public Works Department (PWD) Minister and NDMC Chairman Parvesh Sahib Singh said on Thursday. 'I have talked to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The proposal is pending with him. Whenever it gets cleared from there, we will pass that in the next NDMC council meeting,' Singh told reporters after the civic body's council session. The announcement to rename the Capital's oldest indoor facility came during the campaign by the BJP for the Assembly elections held earlier this year. Singh, who was contesting against former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal from the New Delhi Assembly constituency, had made the announcement. Soon after he took oath as an NDMC member, he had promised to rename the stadium after Maharishi Valmiki, the author of the Ramayana. Built in 1974, the stadium derives its name from the adjacent Mughal-era garden. 'Talkatora' originates from two Persian words: 'tal,' meaning a tank, and 'katora,' meaning a bowl-shaped natural depression. The stadium is known for hosting some of the biggest sports, cultural, and political events. For the name change, the proposal has to go through various steps, made in accordance with the guidelines provided by the MHA. According to NDMC procedures, a name-change request must be submitted to its General Administration Department. After which, the proposal is then placed before its 13-member Council for approval. Once passed, it is sent to the Delhi government's Urban Development department for final clearance. Following the council meeting on Thursday, NDMC vice-chairperson Kuljeet Chahal said that the BJP government is committed to fulfilling its promises. 'The council is underway to get clearance, more shall be discussed in the next meeting,' he said.

Tale Of two NCPs & Senas: Civic Polls Pit Split Parties In Battle Of Survival

Nagpur: The palpating buzz around local body polls in Maharashtra is not without reason, as for the time ever civic bodies like Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur will witness six major parties competing to take control of these municipal corporations. Apart from national parties BJP and Congress, there are two factions each of Shiv Sena and NCP, which has added an interesting twist to the polls likely to be held later this year. For both factions of Shiv Sena and NCP, this is going to be a litmus test as they are the only major (in terms of MPs/MLAs) regional allies within Mahayuti and Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). All four regional outfits are keen to stave off the growing footprint of their national-level allies. In short, it's a battle for political survival at the ground level. And compounding the problem is speculation of cousins Raj and Uddhav Thackeray joining hands ahead of the polls, apart from rumours that both NCP factions too may unite. Prashant Pawar, Nagpur city president (NCP-Ajit), said, "Whether or not the parties merge is known only to two people. Ajit dada and Sharad Pawar saheb. We all don't even think about it as the focus is just to work for the party." He added that last year's assembly polls have proved that NCP (Ajit) faction is the one which people favour. "All the major leaders are in our faction. Apart from this, people have seen the work that Ajit dada has done. People are fully behind us," said Pawar. Mangesh Kashikar, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) leader from Nagpur, too added that their faction has proven its 'worth'. Kashikar said, "Check how many MLAs we have and how many they have. And even now, there are many leaders on the waiting list who are going to join us." About regional parties fighting for political turf in Nagpur, NCP (Sharad Pawar) leader Duneshwar Pethe said, "It has been just over a year since the NCP split. Before that, everything was done by NCP under the leadership of Sharad Pawar Saheb. Is it not a shame that the water problem exists in Nagpur despite BJP being in power for the last 15 years in the civic body, and over a decade in the state? People have told us that they are fed up with Mahayuti and want things to change. We will solve issues related to school fees and garbage collection. English medium schools will be started in NMC to ensure free education for kids. We need to plan out hawkers' zones so that traffic management is also smooth. Just making flyovers does not increase the beauty of the city." Shiv Sena UBT leader Nitin Tiwari said, "People will trust us with their votes because they know that Sena UBT has been at the forefront, fighting for the rights of Nagpurians. We have carried out multiple andolans, exposed corruption by contractors in civic body affairs, and questioned the deterioration of infrastructure in the city. Our party will transform the way the city functions by providing transparent and efficient governance. " His party colleague Kishore Kumeriya said, "Shiv Sainik's real DNA is the teachings of Balasaheb Thackeray, and they are the ones who are in UBT. Shiv Sena runs only because of the foot soldiers, and Sena UBT is filled with grassroot level workers. Also, people have seen the amazing work done by Uddhav Thackeray during his tenure as CM, and that also has an impact on the party image." Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) leader Kashikar said, "Our party is full of leaders who have not only come from UBT but also from other parties. Our strength is growing by the day and in the next week some other big names are joining. Statistically, we had only two seats in NMC so there really is not much to lose. And our study tells us that this time we will bag 12 seats." Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . How Ludhiana West bypoll altered Rupani's fate: Was to leave with wife on June 5, rescheduled UK visit for campaigning, says Jakhar

Chandigarh: Punjab BJP affairs in-charge and former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, who was among those killed in a plane crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday, had rescheduled his family visit to the United Kingdom from June 5 to June 12 owing to the Ludhiana West byelection, according to Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar. "This is very unfortunate. This is how destiny and fate plays out that he came into harm's way. He was to leave along with his wife on June 5, but rescheduled his visit to campaign for Ludhiana West bypoll," Jakhar told TOI. "I believe his wife took the flight on June 5 itself," Jakhar added. Rupani had campaigned for party candidate Jeewan Gupta for a week. A BJP leader said he went back to Gujarat a couple of days ago, taking a flight from Chandigarh. Punjab BJP leader Parminder Singh Brar, while mourning the death of Rupani in a Facebook post, said Rupani was "on a solo journey to see his daughter in London. His wife had already arrived on June 5. They were supposed to travel together, but due to the Ludhiana West byelection, he postponed his trip by a week. Fate had different plans…" Brar added, "We were just together in Ludhiana two days ago. Still, can't come to terms with the fact that he's no longer with us. A truly wonderful person – compassionate, humble, and radiating warmth. One meeting with him and you'd never forget him." Punjab BJP state treasurer Gurdev Sharma Debi said, "He campaigned in Ludhiana for over a week. He was so hardworking that after campaigning, he would hold meetings with party leaders and workers which would continue till late night." Rupani was appointed as Punjab affairs in-charge of BJP in Sept 2022, days before old allies Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and BJP parted ways with each other over now repealed farm laws. He was all praise for Jakhar when the latter was appointed as Punjab BJP president in July 2023 as the saffron party aimed to increase its mass base in the state. Mourning Rupani's demise, Jakhar Thursday said, "He was a thorough gentleman, very sober, soft spoken and had no arrogance at all. His demise is a big loss to family, to Gujarat and to the politics as such people are very rare. I have been a big admirer of him and had a great equation with him." Jakhar also put out a post on X to express grief with the families of plane crash victims. The post read, "The shocking news of Air India plane crash over Ahmedabad with 242 people on board is really heartbreaking. It's painful beyond words. In this sad hour my heart goes to those affected by this tragedy. MSID:: 121805058 413 | Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
