ECU Health proposes new plan to reopen Martin General Hospital

Yahoo23-05-2025

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — ECU Health has released a proposal to reopen Martin General Hospital.
The proposal by the Martin County Board of Commissioners outlines the state's hope for a Rural Emergency Hospital and to create an integrated, attentive, outpatient delivery model designed to meet the health care needs of Martin County.
While the plan is to re-establish essential services using existing parts of the facility, the contingencies below will require state support:
State financial support to transition the Rural Emergency Hospital to a newly-constructed Rural Care Center, given the age and condition of the existing facility.
State financial support to modernize and expand inpatient capacity at ECU Health Beaufort Hospital – a Hill-Burton Act facility built in 1958 – which is critical given the Rural Emergency Hospital model proposed for Martin County cannot have inpatient beds.
ECU Health said that they are committed to transforming health care in support of rural communities and hopes that they can meet the current and future health care needs for Martin County.
The proposal will be presented at the Martin County Board of Commissioners public hearing on June 5, 2025.
The full proposal can be found here.

Trump Golf Club Received 18 Health Code Violations In May Inspection

One of President Donald Trump's New Jersey golf clubs received a 32 out of 100 health inspection score in May, the lowest grade in Somerset County, after it was flagged for 18 violations, including all three requirements in the 'food protected from contamination' category. More Stephen Lovekin/WireImage for Hill & Knowlton) The Somerset County Department of Health inspected Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster on May 6, according to the report, which is publicly available online. The club received a score of 32 out of a 100 possible points, with the inspector documenting 18 violations—nine of which were deemed critical, meaning they 'may result in an unacceptable health risk.' The club was out of compliance with all three requirements in the 'food protected from contamination' category, with violations including expired milk, raw meat stored improperly and a dishwasher that may not reach the required temperature (the first two problems were corrected during the inspection). The inspector also cited four separate hand-washing violations, including sinks without soap or paper towels, one lacking a required sign and another used to store a sanitizer bucket. The club was issued a 'conditionally satisfactory' C grade and required to display a placard with the grade in a visible location. Spokespeople for the Trump Organization and the Somerset County Health Department did not respond to inquiries. Of the roughly 115 retail food establishments inspected in Somerset County in May, Trump's club received the lowest score—32 out of 100. All but one other venue scored 60 or higher, according to a county records search. '[The person in charge] fails to demonstrate knowledge of food safety,' the inspector noted amid the volume and severity of the violations, which is a violation in and of itself under the health code. The club had until May 20 to correct the violations and now faces a follow-up inspection at an unspecified date. (If it has already occurred, the results have not been made public.) Under Bedminster's municipal code, a reinspection cannot result in a grade higher than B once a facility has received a conditional C. Trump owns the Bedminster golf club through a web of companies and the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust, the same structure he used during his first term. Trump is the sole beneficiary of the trust, and can earn income from his businesses during his presidency. He spent more than 100 days at the property during his first term—second only to Mar-a-Lago—according to Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a watchdog. All retail food establishments in New Jersey, including those on private golf courses, are subject to at least one inspection per year under state law. 180—that's the minimum temperature required for a commercial dishwasher's final rinse under Somerset County guidelines. The gauge on Trump's kitchen dishwasher didn't even go that high, maxing out at 170 degrees. Trump described a Bedminster membership as 'an investment in life, luxury & leisure,' touting its 'top amenities & services' in a 2014 tweet. 'Observed household microwave in the main kitchen,' the inspector wrote. 'Must be removed. Only commercial grade equipment allowed in Retail food establishment.' Trump's Bedminster club continues to serve alcohol nearly a year after New Jersey declined to renew its liquor license, citing questions over whether President Trump's felony convictions disqualify him under state law. The club has a temporary permit, which is set to expire on June 30. Forbes estimates Donald Trump is worth about $5.1 billion, with much of his wealth coming from his shares in Trump Media. ECU Health Pop Up series provides health care to rural counties

MARTIN COUNTY, N.C (WNCT) — ECU Health is bringing two free community pop up health events this week to Martin County, as part of the Health and Hope: Martin County Community Health Pop Up series. Tuesday's event took place at the Jamesville Fire Department and provided health screenings, health care education, enrollment assistance for affordable health insurance plans through ACA Market place, and more vital services. Another service provided was a free fruit and vegetable giveaway, thanks to partnering service provider, Conetoe Family Life Center. The event offered health services as an opportunity to support rural health directly. Community Health Improvement Coordinator, Kelly Ange, who serves ECU Health Beaufort Hospital, says events like this help improve outcomes in Eastern North Carolina. 'ECU Health just wanted to bring quality health care here to Martin County,' she said. 'So, we're offering free health screenings to include height, weight, BMI, high blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol screening. So that's a whole lot for one day, right? And we've also brought free produce with us as well as ways to get hooked up to insurance, as well as if you don't have a primary care provider, we have a way here for you to get connected' The next event is Thursday, June 5th at Faith Community Outreach Food Distribution Center in Robersonville from noon to 4 o'clock. Coliseum, Crypto.com Arena and Long Beach waterfront among 2028 Paralympics venues

(LA28) Already slated to be the first venue in the world to host events from three different Olympic Summer Games, the Coliseum will help break new ground for the Paralympics in 2028. The iconic stadium is at the center of the first Paralympic Games in L.A. as it hosts the para track and field competition, LA28 announced Tuesday in an updated venue plan that placed 23 sports into their future Paralympic homes. Advertisement 'This is a momentous occasion for the city of Los Angeles,' para swimmer and Inglewood native Jamal Hill said in an interview with The Times. 'Being a native Los Angeleno, you always hear about this melting pot of Los Angeles and many times, that melting pot, the default is to really thinking like, ethnic or racial or even cultural based. … I think it's really, really beautiful and inclusive now that that melting pot is really starting to cover ability.' The venue plan approved by the International Paralympic Committee places the majority of the Paralympic events in L.A., with additional sites in Long Beach, Carson and Arcadia. With all competition venues within a 35-mile radius, competitors have the opportunity to be housed in one Paralympic village for the first time since Rio in 2016. The unified Paralympic village on UCLA's campus differs from Paris, which had a decentralized plan with Paralympians staying at satellite villages. The 2024 Games, which were the first post-pandemic Olympics and Paralympics, marked the first true Games experience for Hill, who won a bronze medal in the 50-meter freestyle in Tokyo. Advertisement 'We had 30 people that I know who are going to fly [to Paris],' Hill said. 'There's going to be like 300 people that I know at that swim venue.' Para swimming will take place in the Long Beach Convention Center lot alongside para climbing, which will make its Paralympic debut in 2028. Long Beach will also host shooting para sport in the convention center, sitting volleyball in the Long Beach Arena and para canoe sprint and para rowing at Marine Stadium. In downtown L.A., the Convention Center will host boccia, para judo, para table tennis, para taekwondo and wheelchair fencing. Across the street, wheelchair basketball will take place in Arena while goalball will be in the Peacock Theater. Venice Beach will have the starting lines for the para triathlon and para marathon. (LA28) Carson will host para archery at the fields at Dignity Health Sports Park, wheelchair tennis at the tennis center and para cycling track in the Velodrome. Para equestrian will take place at Santa Anita Park. Advertisement 'The Paralympic Games showcases the highest level of athleticism, skill and endurance and it is important for LA28 to deliver a plan that not only elevates Paralympic sport, but brings it to the next level,' LA28 Chief Executive officer Reynold Hoover said in a statement. Venues for para weightlifting, para cycling road and the course and finish line of the para marathon have yet to be announced. The 2028 Paralympics will run from Aug. 15-27, opening at SoFi Stadium. They follow the 2028 Olympics, which will run from July 14-30. While the Olympics will be in L.A. for a third time, 2028 will mark the city's first Paralympic Games. The international sporting event for athletes with physical disabilities is coming off record viewership numbers in Paris, where the overall live audience grew by 40% compared to Tokyo and by 117% compared to Rio, according to a Nielsen Sports study conducted on behalf of the IPC. LA28 NBC reported a record 15.4 million total viewers across its TV and streaming platforms for the Paralympic Games, which followed a similar boost in interest to the Olympics last summer. Advertisement 'The Olympics and the Paralympics are truly becoming this concurrent and congruent movement which reflects the times that we're in,' Hill said. 'People aren't afraid anymore. They're not ashamed of who they are. They're not ashamed of their disability. They're not afraid to speak out and be seen as different because it's more accepted than ever for us to say, you know what, we're all different.'
