Congress To Rebuild Ground Network From Booth To State, Says New Gujarat Unit Chief

AHMEDABAD: Newly appointed Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Amit Chavda has pledged to lead a proactive, people-centric opposition aimed at ensuring the welfare, peace, prosperity, and security of Gujarat's citizens. Addressing party workers and the press following his return from Delhi, Chavda said the Congress would firmly raise the voice of the common people, especially at a time when the "double-engine BJP government is actively suppressing it".
Chavda, a former state Congress president and seasoned MLA, said the party would launch an extensive 'Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan', strengthening the organisation from booth to state level.
"We will ensure that grassroots workers are empowered and their voices reflected in all party decisions," he said, adding that new faces would be given opportunities as part of a renewed organisational structure.
Expressing gratitude to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, KC Venugopal, and Gujarat in-charge Mukul Wasnik for entrusting him with the leadership, Chavda also thanked thousands of Congress workers and leaders who welcomed him at Ahmedabad airport upon his arrival.
He emphasised that the Congress will intensify its outreach efforts, build direct public engagement, and fight for key issues affecting Gujarat.
"We will fight for the rights of youth, farmers, women, the marginalised, and the oppressed. The present government thrives on bureaucratic overreach, commission raj, and corruption. It must be challenged head-on," he said.
Chavda criticised the BJP-led state government for its alleged authoritarianism, accusing it of stifling democratic dissent. "Citizens are being harassed for voicing concerns. Journalists and whistleblowers are threatened into silence. This undeclared emergency must end, and Congress workers will be at the forefront to protect democracy," he declared.
Referring to growing public anger, he said: "Bridges are collapsing, people are dying, daughters are being pushed to suicide, and cattle farmers are being cane-charged for raising their demands. The people of Gujarat are losing faith in the BJP."
Quoting Rahul Gandhi's recent speech in Parliament, Chavda said the Congress is committed to defeating the BJP in Gujarat and restoring true democratic governance. 'We will fight together, as one Congress family from the top leadership to the last worker on the ground and ensure that the people of Gujarat reclaim their rights and dignity,' he concluded.

Adbhut! Avishwasniya!: Delhis Infamous Minto Bridge Underpass Stays Clear Amidst Heavy Rains, X Cant Handle It

In a unique scene that took Delhiites by surprise and social media into tizzy, the infamous waterlogged Minto Bridge underpass witnessed free flowing traffic during Wednesday morning, even as heavy rain pounded the national capital. The 90-year-old railway underbridge has long been synonymous with torrential waterlogging during monsoon months, which has continued since India's independence. The Minto Bridge, placed strategically where Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (DDU) Marg meets Swami Vivekananda Marg, is an integral artery that connects Connaught Place, New Delhi Railway Station, Old Delhi, and Darya Ganj. Its vulnerability to flooding has been a commuters' nightmare for long. #WATCH | Delhi: Latest visuals from Minto Bridge; traffic running smoothly. The national capital received heavy rainfall this morning. — ANI (@ANI) July 23, 2025 But a video uploaded by news agency ANI on Wednesday morning presented a very different picture: cars plying effortlessly under the underpass with no signs of waterlogging in sight. "Latest visuals from Minto Bridge; traffic flowing smoothly. The national capital was lashed with heavy rain this morning," read the caption accompanying the video. The sudden turn of events soon attracted responses on all social media networks, with most calling it a "miracle at Minto Bridge." Amit Malviya of BJP attributed the turnaround to the new Delhi BJP government under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. "Even after heavy rain, vehicles passed smoothly over Minto Bridge, which used to get flooded with even a drizzle. That's the difference Delhi is seeing in just a few months under the BJP government!" Malviya tweeted. X user Monica Jasuja shared the same sentiment, saying in amazement, "Breaking: Minto Bridge navigates Delhi rains without becoming a swimming pool! Adbhut! Avishwasniya! Akalpaniya! (Amazing! Unbelievable! Unimaginable!)". Breaking: Minto Bridge survives Delhi rains without turning into a swimming pool! Adbhut! Avishwasniya! Akalpaniya! 90 years of "underwater bridge experience" finally ends. Turns out all it needed was some actual drain cleaning, not underwater engineering! New government… — Monica Jasuja (@jasuja) July 23, 2025 While some rejoiced at the miracle, others argued over whether that kind of success should be held newsworthy. "Anything functioning normally in this country is such an anomaly that it warrants a celebration," one X user wrote. Another said, "One of the busiest roads in the most significant borough of the capital country not waterlogged because of rain is news in this country." Alternatively, other users provided compliments for the efforts of the present government. "You know the govt has done a great job when Minto bridge has no rain water surrounded with less traffic. Mass respect and W for Rekha Gupta," wrote another user. Smita Barooah, considering the difficulty, wrote, "The Delhi government has been working on cleaning the drains on a war footing.". In spite of the gigantic pendency & since they've been in power for less than 6 months, much has been accomplished. Of course much more is yet to be done. Minto Bridge remaining open during the monsoons is a sign of good progress. The Minto Bridge has been an evergreen problem for civic officials in the past, with attempts over decades to address its waterlogging problems. The Public Works Department (PWD) has taken numerous steps over the years, ranging from the installation of pumps to the laying of new drainage lines. This latest example of the underpass staying dry even as heavy rains lashed the city indicates that all efforts made recently may be paying off, providing a ray of hope for Delhi's monsoons.

Conflict between India & Pakistan ‘was probably going to end up in nuclear war', claims Trump

US President Donald Trump, on Tuesday (July 22), yet again claimed credit for brokering a peace deal between India and Pakistan, stating that his mediation averted a potential 'nuclear war' between the two countries. He also alleged that five planes were shot down in the conflict. 'We stopped wars between India and Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda,' he said at a reception in the White House with the Congress members. 'They shot down five planes and it was back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. I called them and said, 'Listen, no more trade. If you do this, you're not going to be good…They're both powerful nuclear nations and that would have happened, and who knows where that would have ended up. And I stopped it',' he added. He further claimed that the United States obliterated Iran's nuclear facilities and stopped the conflict between Kosovo and Serbia. 'And a couple of others that we didn't stop a war, but we stopped what probably could have ended up in a war. We do that on the House as compliments of America. Okay, do you think (former US President Joe) Biden would do that? I don't think so. Do you think he ever heard of any of those countries? I don't think so,' the US president said. 'Five jets were shot down,' says Trump Trump, who has repeatedly claimed that the United States mediated and brokered a truce between India and Pakistan, for the first time on Friday said that 'five jets were shot down' during the conflict. However, he did not specify whether the jets were lost by either of the two countries or whether he was referring to combined losses. Speaking at the White House during a dinner he hosted for Republican senators on Friday, Trump said, 'You had India, Pakistan, that was going… in fact, planes were being shot out of the air…four or five. But I think five jets were shot down actually…that was getting worse and worse, wasn't it? That was looking like it was going to go…these are two serious nuclear countries, and they were hitting each other.' 'But India and Pakistan were going at it, and they were back and forth, and it was getting bigger and bigger. And we got it solved through trade. We said 'You guys want to make a trade deal. We're not making a trade deal if you're going to be throwing around weapons and maybe nuclear weapons. Both very powerful nuclear states,' Trump said. He said his administration achieved more in six months than almost any other could accomplish in eight years. 'Something I am very proud of, we stopped a lot of wars, a lot of wars. And these were serious wars,' Trump said. New Delhi has consistently maintained that the two sides halted their military actions following direct talks between their militaries without any mediation by the US. Since May 10, Trump has repeated his claim at least 20 times on various occasions that he 'helped settle' the tensions between India and Pakistan and that he told the nuclear-armed South Asian neighbours that America will do a 'lot of trade' with them if they stopped the conflict. Delhi's Minto Bridge Fine Despite Heavy Rains, Internet Calls It ‘Medical Miracle'

Last Updated: The infamous underbridge that is believed to be over 90 years old was caught functioning properly for once amidst the monsoon season. As torrential rains struck the national capital, Delhiites immediately worried for the infamous Minto Bridge with its reputation for waterlogging and traffic malfunctions. Much to everyone's surprise, the bridge functioned smoothly on Wednesday, July 23, with no case of waterlogging encountered by the locals and travellers. The railway underbridge, which is approaching a century of its existence, has faced major waterlogging issues since its Independence. Because it lies at the key traffic junction of Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (DDU) Marg and Swami Vivekananda Marg (formerly Minto Road), the underbridge often posed an unavoidable hurdle during the monsoon season in the past for travellers going towards Connaught Place on one side and New Delhi station, Old Delhi and Darya Ganj on the other. While the strategic positioning of the underbridge supports heavy vehicle turnout, it endured a flood of water gathering during the rainfalls in the city, causing a major traffic issue. The scenes were different today, however, as news agency ANI posted a video showing normal vehicular movement and no waterlogging at the infamous bridge. 'Latest visuals from Minto Bridge; traffic running smoothly. The national capital received heavy rainfall this morning," read the caption to the video, which would've raised eyebrows for locals used to facing traffic problems at the Minto Bridge. 'Despite heavy rain, traffic moved smoothly at Minto Bridge, once the first to flood with even a drizzle. That's the change Delhi is witnessing under the BJP government in just a few months!" tweeted BJP's Amit Malviya, who credited the change to the BJP government in Delhi under the new Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. An X user summed up the emotions of the Delhiites on seeing a smoothly functioning Minto Bridge, writing: 'Breaking: Minto Bridge survives Delhi rains without turning into a swimming pool! Adbhut! Avishwasniya! Akalpaniya! (Amazing! Unbelievable! Unimaginable)." Another, however, gave a reality check to everyone by saying this should ideally not even be news in a developing country. 'One of the busiest roads in the most important borough of the country's capital, not being waterlogged due to rain is news in this country," the user wrote. view comments First Published: July 23, 2025, 14:33 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
