‘Organisers should apply for permission in advance': Police deny nod to Nabanna protest today

THE WEST Bengal as well as the Kolkata Police have prohibited a 'Nabanna Abhiyan' protest scheduled for Saturday, citing security concerns and a 'lack of official permission.'
The protest, called by the parents of the RG Kar rape and murder victim, would not be allowed at Nabanna, the state administrative headquarters, senior officers said on Friday.
The police have instead suggested two alternative locations for peaceful demonstrations: the Santragachi bus stand and the Rani Rashmoni area.
Officers pointed out that prohibitory orders are in effect around Nabanna, making protests and processions illegal in the area due to high-level security. The police also claimed that the organisers had not applied for permission for the rally, despite a similar protest last year by the West Bengal Students' Association that had the backing of the BJP.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma and Howrah City Police Commissioner Praveen Tripathi, addressing a press conference, appealed to organisers to apply for permission in advance, specifying the location, number of participants and logistics to allow police to make the necessary arrangements.
Tripathi said, 'Apply for a peaceful protest. Inform in advance where, how many people will come, and how they will reach there. Then the police can take action accordingly.'
The 'Kalighat Chalo' abhiyan, a separate protest by the Abhaya Mancha organisation, has also been informed of an alternative location, according to Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma.
He said, 'The organizers have been informed about this. An alternative place has also been identified for them.'
While the Calcutta High Court has affirmed that 'peaceful protest is a fundamental right,' it has also mandated that such demonstrations must be non-violent and not cause damage to government property.
The police emphasised that any violation of rules will result in strict action.
To ensure compliance, authorities will deploy CCTV cameras, drones, and other surveillance measures. State Police ADG South Bengal Supratim Sarkar warned, 'If there is a gathering at a place other than the alternative place, action will be taken according to the situation. But it is clear that gatherings cannot be held in Nabanna or adjacent areas.'
ADG (Law and Order) Jawed Shamim added, 'Rules apply to all: To those in politics as well as the general public. Proportionate and adequate action will be taken against any violation of rules.'
