THREE Durban North residents are hoping to raise much-needed funds for the Durban & Coast SPCA at next weekend's Kennel Sleepover which will see residents brave the kennels at the association's Springfield Park premises overnight and be 'bailed' out to give back to animals in need.
The event coincides with International Homeless Animals Day which aims to educate people about homeless and abandoned animals.
Residents Saysha Till and Natalie Burne will be involved in their first sleepover while Senta Seele will be back for a fourth time. In all, 13 others will join them in the kennels at the Springfield Park premises which will be open to visitors from 16:00 to 18:00.
Seele has set a fundraising target of R10 000 and explained why she got involved.
'Last year I raised R18 000 and while I would like to beat that, I've set the target at R10 000. My journey with the SPCA began when I was chairlady of the KZN Women In Business; the association was my charity that was voted in by our members. I worked so closely with them that I really saw a lot more into the heart of the SPCA and I've not looked back since then,' she said.

The feeling was similar for Till, whose first pet was adopted from the SPCA.
'Our first family dog came from the SPCA and I was three years old at the time. I've always known about the incredible work they do and I feel like anyone who loves animals should support them in whatever way they can,' she said.
For Burne, another first-timer of the event and current president of the Umhlanga Women Achievers (UWA), getting involved was a no-brainer as she loves animals.
'I used to rescue, and I love animals, so this was something I've been wanting to do. I have visited every year because I have friends who have participated and now I can look forward to being part of the fun while raising funds for our animals. Whenever I get the opportunity I promote the SPCA as much as I can,' she said.
The Durban & Coast SPCA kennel sleepover takes place on Saturday, August 16. The public can visit their friends in the kennels from 16:00 to 18:00 on the evening. To bail people out visit www.spcadbn.org.za or go to the Durban SPCA Facebook page.

Meet the artist who turned water into a metaphor for life

Cape Town-based artist Adele van Heerden recently showcased her mesmerising work at The Blue House in Parkwood, part of the David Krut Projects. Her beautiful blend of memory, water, and emotion offers a window into her soul, as well as a journey that began in childhood, nurtured by a family who recognised her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in fine arts. Her education was a holistic blend of technical discipline, academic rigour, and curatorship. Read more: Artist celebrates women with Nespresso coffee capsules A pivotal turning point in her career was a personal connection to water. What started as a necessity for rehabilitation evolved into a deep fascination. The waterscapes she explored became a powerful metaphor for her inner world and a period of intense personal transformation. The act of swimming allowed her to explore concepts of fluidity, healing, and change, visually articulating the feeling of being in water and its ability to shift and nurture. Van Heerden's art often explores dualities and unresolved questions, transforming external waterscapes into moments of personal exploration. She reconsiders the line between the external and internal worlds, emphasising sensation over representation. Her unique reverse-painting technique is a crucial part of this process. She begins with a photograph, then uses pastel on translucent drafting film, adding gouache and acrylic to the reverse side, and, finally, accents of aerosol to accentuate light and tonalities. This method beautifully layers her captured memories with a rich internal landscape. Residencies in Paris, Germany, and Johannesburg, which she considers vital for self-exploration and creative inquiry, have enriched her journey. During these periods, she has been able to slow down, digitally detox, and re-evaluate personal narratives. Her time in Germany, for instance, sparked a deep fascination with limnology, the study of lakes, and a desire to connect with the local history and people. Van Heerden's work is a testament to the power of art to articulate the unseen and the unspoken. Rooted in personal experience and meticulously researched narratives, her paintings offer glimpses into her inner world, inviting viewers to reflect on their own. Her journey is a beautiful, flowing narrative of discovery, from a young girl sketching in her room to a celebrated artist exploring the depths of water, memory, and identity. Annie Mthembu opens up about her failed marriage to Da Guru

Da Guru has since publicly apologised to Annie. Real Housewives of Durban star Annie Mthembu has broken her silence on her separation from husband Kgolo 'Da Guru' Mthembu. During a podcast with Lungelo KM on Engineer Your Life, Annie spoke candidly about the pain and emotional toll of their split. She said she had remained quiet for so long because she was still processing everything that had happened. 'I didn't want to speak from an overly emotional space. You also don't want too many people in your life while you're trying to figure it out,' she added. Annie and Kgolo met in 2016 when she worked as his assistant. They tied the knot in 2021 in a lavish ceremony at La Paris Estate in Franschhoek, Cape Town. She shared that their separation was due to her husband's infidelity. 'No one likes being cheated on. It makes you question yourself a lot,' she said. 'Admitting I was being cheated on felt like saying I wasn't good enough. People told me things — some true, some not. When you don't know what to believe, you start losing your mind. I was highly embarrassed. I wasn't in a good place.' Annie said she tried to fix her marriage but eventually had to let go for the sake of her children. 'I just wanted to protect all of us, even though I wasn't being protected. Everybody knew things I didn't. Still, I wanted to protect myself, my children, and our family. Even though I knew he was doing his thing, I still wanted us to be a family.' Annie revealed they have been separated for two years, and this December will mark three years since their split. 'I am still fighting the unforgiveness. They say time heals — I'm waiting for time to do its job,' she said. Da Guru apologises to Annie After Lungelo posted a clip of Annie's interview on Instagram, Da Guru took to the comments section to apologise. 'No matter the personal struggles I was facing, there's never an excuse for dishonouring God's blessings. I deeply regret the pain I've caused you. As the head of the family, I let everyone down. Annie, from the bottom of my heart, I wish you true love, healing and peace. Farewell Pretty Wings,' he wrote.
