Forex reserves expose Pakistan's bankruptcy vs India's boom, says Amit Malviya

Hans India05-05-2025
New Delhi: BJP leader Amit Malviya on Monday highlighted the weakness of Pakistan's economy, citing the meagre $15 billion in total foreign exchange reserves that the country has, in sharp contrast to India's massive forex kitty of $688 billion.
'Forex reserves tell the tale: Pakistan's Bankruptcy vs India's Boom,' Malviya posted on X.
'How long will it take for Pakistan's tiny billions to disappear? Several Indian conglomerates, both public and private, have turnovers many times greater than $15 Bn,' said the national in charge of the BJP's Information and Technology department.
'Pakistan can't feed its people, yet its Generals, both serving and retired, are busy dreaming of becoming Ghazis,' Malviya remarked.
Meanwhile, global ratings agency Moody's on Monday said it sees India's macroeconomic conditions as remaining stable even if tensions with Pakistan rise after the horrific terror attack at Pahalgam in which 26 tourists were shot dead.
However, sustained escalation in tensions with India would likely hit Pakistan's economy and hamper the government's ongoing fiscal consolidation goals, the Moody's report states.
The report also points out that amid heightened geopolitical posturing, further flare-ups could impair access to external financing and put additional pressure on Pakistan's foreign-exchange reserves — which, at just over $15 billion, remain far below what is required to meet external debt obligations in the coming years.
In contrast, India's reserves are robust, exceeding $688 billion. The macroeconomic conditions in India, Moody's noted, remain stable due to strong public investment and resilient private consumption, despite the possibility of higher defence spending slowing its fiscal consolidation.
According to the report, comparatively, the macroeconomic conditions in India would be stable, bolstered by moderating but still high levels of growth amid strong public investment and healthy private consumption.
'In a scenario of sustained escalation in localised tensions, we do not expect major disruptions to India's economic activity because it has minimal economic relations with Pakistan (less than 0.5 per cent of India's total exports in 2024).
Pakistan, on the other hand, is confronted by a precarious situation on the economic front. The country was on the brink of sovereign default in 2023 and had to be bailed out by a $3 billion IMF loan. The country is still critically dependent on this financial lifeline and is desperately trying to raise another $1.3 billion climate resilience loan.

Nifty 50 reclaims 25,000 after nearly a month: Can bulls drive the index to 25,250?

Indian stock market stayed higher for the fifth straight session on Wednesday, as expectations of a proposed cut in GST rates across key categories boosted hopes of a demand recovery in the economy, continuing to support the rally on Dalal Street even as the deadline for an additional 25% US tariff hike fast approaches. The five-day rally also helped the Nifty 50 reclaim the psychological 25,000 mark, closing at 25,050, gaining 0.23% The index was last seen at this level on July 24, 2025. It first crossed the 25,000 mark in August 2024 and later scaled 26,000 to register an all-time high of 26,277. The muted performance of India Inc. in the June quarter, which failed to justify expensive valuations, coupled with heavy selling by overseas investors, had earlier dragged the index lower. Weakening trade relations with the US, after Washington imposed 50% tariffs on Indian goods, further pressured domestic equities. However, steady inflows from domestic institutional investors limited the downside and helped the index recover from a three-month low earlier this month. Amid concerns that higher tariffs could hurt economic growth, the government's proposal to cut GST on major items lifted investor sentiment, triggering a fresh wave of buying, allowing the index to comfortably hold above all its key moving averages. According to Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities, Nifty 50 witnessed a largely positive session, closing above the 25,000 mark. He noted that sentiment is likely to favour the bulls, as the index has sustained above the 21 EMA for the past three sessions, with put writers outnumbering call writers for the first time in several days. He expects the index to remain a 'buy on dips' as long as it holds above 24,800, while resistance is seen at 25,250, above which gains could extend towards 25,500. Echoing a positive outlook, Hardik Matalia, Derivative Analyst at Choice Equity Broking, pointed out that Nifty is now comfortably holding above all its key moving averages, reflecting a firm underlying trend. On the downside, he highlighted immediate support at 25,000, followed by 24,800, while resistance lies at 25,100 and 25,200. On the derivatives front, he added that the highest Call Open Interest is concentrated at the 25,100 and 25,200 strikes, indicating key resistance zones, while the highest Put Open Interest is at 25,000 and 24,900, suggesting strong support levels. This setup implies that the 25,000–25,100 range will be crucial for Nifty's near-term movement, with a breakout on either side likely to dictate the next directional trend. Agriculture Minister triggered panic buying of urea, charges BJP chief

BJP Telangana president N. Ramchander Rao on Wednesday offered to resign from his post if Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao can prove there is a fertilizer shortage in the State. He blamed the Minister for 'prematurely declaring' a lack of stock, which triggered panic buying among farmers leading to black market activity. He likened the situation to a financial panic, calling it a 'run on fertilizer'. At a press conference at the State office, he accused the Congress government of 'mismanagement' and 'inefficiency', alleging that it created an 'artificial scarcity' despite the Centre supplying sufficient quantities. Mr. Rao also challenged Mr. Nageswara Rao to resign if he fails to prove the shortage. Cautioning the State government against launching a campaign against the Centre over the issue, he urged farmers not to be misled by 'false statements'. According to Mr. Rao, 7,250 rakes of urea were supplied to Telangana by IFFCO, KRIBHCO and RCF, with an additional 10,000 metric tonnes allocated through imports at Karaikal Port. He noted that despite global challenges, including the Israel–Iran conflict and disruptions in the Red Sea, the Centre did not hold back on fertilizer supply. He reiterated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government remains committed to farmers' welfare. For the 2025 Rabi season (October 2024–March 2025), the Centre supplied 12.47 lakh metric tonnes of urea against the State's requirement of 9.87 lakh metric tonnes. Of this, the State government sold only 10.43 lakh metric tonnes, while 2.04 lakh metric tonnes remained as opening stock for the Kharif season. For the ongoing Kharif season (up to August 2025), the Centre has already supplied 5.18 lakh metric tonnes out of the required 8.3 lakh metric tonnes. As of now, 7.22 lakh metric tonnes of urea are available in the State. Mr. Rao said that in the Agriculture Minister's own district, 3,200 tonnes more urea were sold this August compared to last year, despite no change in crop area. He questioned whether this excess supply actually reached farmers or was diverted to the black market. He also noted that even when production at the Ramagundam factory was halted due to technical issues, the Centre ensured uninterrupted supply. Highlighting the Centre's support for farmers, Mr. Rao said the Modi government has allocated ₹1.40 lakh crore in fertilizer subsidies, making fertilizers available to farmers at just 10–20% of the actual cost. On the issue of the Vice Presidential candidate, Mr. Rao questioned why the Congress and its allies did not nominate a BC candidate, despite earlier lobbying for one. He urged Congress and INDIA bloc MPs to support NDA's MBC candidate C.P. Radhakrishnan to ensure justice for BCs. Mr. Rao also condemned divisive slogans like 'Marwari Go Back', calling them harmful and unconstitutional. 'We are all Indians, and anyone from any region has the right to live anywhere in the country,' he said, blaming 'Urban Naxal' forces and Congress leaders for encouraging such sentiments.

Tunnel road will be another Yettinahole project: BJP

The Opposition BJP on Wednesday said the proposed 17-km tunnel road in the city will be 'another Yettinahole project' and urged the Congress government to withdraw it. Speaking on the debate initiated by the Opposition on the halting of development works in the State, Leader of the Opposition R. Ashok said the cost of the Yettinahole project has tripled from ₹8,000 crore in 2011 to ₹25,000 crore in 2025. The project was initiated during the tenure of D.V. Sadananda Gowda for catering to the drinking water needs of the drought-prone districts of the southern part of the State. Even after spending ₹25,000 crore on the project, the water has not reached Kolar and other districts, Mr. Ashok said. C.N. Ashwath Narayana (BJP) said that during the S.M. Krishna government, the civic body, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, mortgaged properties and buildings to raise loans. Now, the government has decided to raise ₹8,000 crore loans from Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited (HUDCO) by mortgaging government buildings and properties.
