Eddie Howe sends four-word message to Alexander Isak as Newcastle fans make feelings clear
Eddie Howe has said the door remains "well and truly open" for Alexander Isak to return to the Newcastle fold despite the club's fans making their feelings towards the wantaway striker clear at the end of their scoreless draw away to Aston Villa.
Sweden striker Isak continues to stay away from the first-team squad as he attempts to force a move out of St James' Park and angry Toon supporters chanted "There's only one greedy *******," at full-time.
Liverpool have had one bid for Isak rejected and it remains unclear whether they will return with an improved offer before the deadline at 7pm on September 1. But that has not stopped Isak from digging his heels in as he attempts to extract himself from a club where he was previously on the cusp of hero status.
He has three years remaining on his contract and has continued to receive his £140,000 per week salary despite not even training with his team-mates in recent weeks. Isak continues to work alone at the club's training ground and has even moved out of his residence on Tyneside.
But speaking after a game in which he hailed his available players for their performance, Howe said of the summer's biggest transfer saga: "Nothing's changed. The door is well and truly open but he has to decide what he wants to do.
"We would like a resolution. The ownership, everyone, the players we have, want that clarity. You don't need any distraction. I'm not in control of that. There's only one person in control of that."
Asked if he means Isak, Howe added: "Alex is in control of what he does. I'm not in control of him." And in terms of Isak being fined for not being part of the matchday squad, Howe was unable to add clarity when adding: "Other people deal with that issue. I'm concentrating on the team."
Irrespective of Isak's future, Newcastle remain eager to add to their squad by September 1's deadline, with Jacob Ramsey set to be announced as a £40m from Saturday's opponents.
Howe continued: "We're actively looking in the market. We're working hard to bring players in, more out of hope than expectation."

Alexander Isak's feisty response to Man Utd boss sends clear message to Liverpool dressing room
The clock is ticking for Liverpool to pull off a remarkable swoop for Alexander Isak, who remains out in the cold at Newcastle United with the transfer deadline creeping up For better or for worse, Alexander Isak has shown he's not afraid to back his corner - as evidenced by his defiant response to former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag. The Liverpool dressing room know exactly the sort of character they'll be getting if they do smash the British transfer record to sign him this summer. The Newcastle United striker has drawn plenty of flak in recent weeks amid his push for a blockbuster move to Anfield - but he's proved he can give as good as he gets when challenged. A prime example came after Ten Hag accused Newcastle of time-wasting during the 2023 Carabao Cup final. "We know they delay," the then- Manchester United manager complained. "It's something referees don't want." Isak was quick to fire back when asked about those comments following Newcastle's 2-0 Premier League win over United a few weeks later. "I don't really agree," he said firmly. "We worked with intensity, and we were the team that wanted to win - the team bringing the game forward." He didn't stop there, either. Turning the criticism back on United, Isak added: "They wasted more time than us. I don't put too much focus on that. I think we put in a great performance." The remarks showcase Isak's feisty nature and willingness to stand his ground - qualities mirrored in his ongoing attempts to engineer a move to Liverpool this summer. The Reds could add the 25-year-old to a star-studded revamped front line featuring Mohamed Salah, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz. They're weighing up whether to smash the British transfer record for the second time this summer to secure his signature after doing so for Wirtz in a deal totalling £116m. Newcastle, however, are standing firm and demanding £150million - a figure Liverpool would naturally aim to drive down. That standoff may soon come to a head. Growing pressure could force Newcastle's hand, with reports claiming Isak is ready to down tools and refuse to play for the club even if his transfer demands are not met. Conversely, Liverpool's urgency may be already be fading thanks to Ekitike's blistering start to life on Merseyside. The Frenchman, signed for £69m from Eintracht Frankfurt, has wasted no time making his mark, scoring in the Community Shield defeat to Crystal Palace before finding the net again in Friday's victory over Bournemouth. A potential deal for Isak remains up in the air and with Newcastle yet to sign a replacement, there's no guarantee their stance will soften. He skipped the club's pre-season tour of Asia and even threatened to go on strike. His absence was felt on Saturday as he was left out of Newcastle's opening-day trip to Aston Villa, with Anthony Gordon deployed as a makeshift No. 9. The match finished goalless, with Newcastle failing to capitalise despite Ezri Konsa's red card in the 66th minute. Eddie Howe's side dominated possession and registered 16 shots, but only three were on target - a statistic that underlined just how much they missed Isak's cutting edge. As well as calling the wantaway striker "greedy", the travelling support even came up with a new song for their once beloved frontman. "We don't care about Isak, he don't care about me," they roared as they left the stadium. "All we care about is NUFC." When asked about the chant, Howe refused to condemn it. "Whatever happens, I think the supporters acted really well today because they supported the team," he said. "Not everything has been plain sailing but they've always been with the team. And then if afterwards they want to say something, I think they're very free to do that." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Alan Shearer doesn't hold back in furious rant on Alexander Isak and Liverpool saga
Alan Shearer has shared his thoughts on Alexander Isak after the Newcastle striker missed their 0-0 draw with Aston Villa on Saturday as he attempts to force through a transfer to Liverpool Alan Shearer has taken aim at Alexander Isak after the striker missed Newcastle's Premier League opener against Aston Villa as he pushes for a move to Liverpool. Isak has refused to play for Newcastle in an attempt to force through an exit, having seen the club reject an opening bid from Liverpool earlier this month. And Newcastle legend Shearer has slammed Isak's conduct after the Magpies drew 0-0 with Aston Villa, accusing him of "taking liberties" by refusing to play. Addressing the situation on BBC Match of the Day, Wayne Rooney said: "I think he has to go about it the right way and I've been there myself, where I've asked to leave Manchester United." Shearer then interjected: "But you put in a transfer request. You didn't refuse to train, you didn't refuse to play, so there is a way to do it and Alex is not going about it the right way at all. You have to feel sorry for the players and the manager. "The players today are busting a gut for the football club, for the thousands of fans that have travelled all that way to Villa Park. They're giving their all. "Yet they're looking at another player, wherever he is, refusing to play despite having a three-year contract and on over £100,000-a-week. [The fans] are paying £60 or £70 for a ticket, £30 for petrol or a train ticket. "You can imagine the anger that they're feeling that someone is taking the liberty of saying, 'I'm refusing to play'. You just can't do that when you've got a three-year contract. "I also understand there's two sides to every story and we've never heard anything from him or his side yet, it's all leaks or reports. There is still a chance, albeit a small chance, that he could be integrated back into the team if he says sorry. "It's unlikely that that's the case, but if it gets past the transfer deadline day and there's still an impasse and no one's budging and he's still at Newcastle, I can't see a way back then." Newcastle boss Eddie Howe offered an update on Isak's future after the game, stating: "Nothing's changed. The door is well and truly open but he has to decide what he wants to do. "We would like a resolution. The ownership, everyone, the players we have, want that clarity. You don't need any distraction. I'm not in control of that. There's only one person in control of that."

Eddie Howe makes concerning Newcastle transfer admission in latest Alexander Isak twist
Eddie Howe says Newcastle are yet to replace Callum Wilson but chances of new arrivals before deadline day are now a case of "hope more than expectation" at St James' Park Eddie Howe says Newcastle remain keen on bringing in new faces over the next fortnight but admits: "It's more hope than expectation." Regardless of Alexander Isak's future, the Toon are keen to bring in a new striker because they are yet to replace Callum Wilson, who left at the end of his contract in June. And late in a window where the majority of their rivals have already welcomed in new No9s, Howe said: "It seems like the striker market gets tighter every year. Maybe that's because we have continued to grow as a team. "There's not many players of that calibre to make us better and when they're potentially available the price seems to go up, and then you are dealt other challenges like PSR, how much you spend in the window, the long-term effects if you do the transfer. "It is not as clear as going out and getting any player. They have got to fit the team, make us better and be affordable. That's not a large group of players." Newcastle had been keen to pursue Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Hugo Ekitike and Joao Pedro earlier in the summer – only for all four to join other clubs. Howe continued: "We're actively looking in the market. We're working hard to bring players in, more out of hope than expectation." Asked whether there was any development to Isak's situation on Saturday afternoon, Howe added: "Nothing's changed. The door is well and truly open but he has to decide what he wants to do. "We would like a resolution. The ownership, everyone, the players we have, want that clarity. You don't need any distraction. I'm not in control of that. There's only one person in control of that." Asked if he means Isak, Howe added: "Alex is in control of what he does. I'm not in control of him." And in terms of Isak being fined for not being part of the matchday squad, Howe was unable to add clarity when adding: "Other people deal with that issue. I'm concentrating on the team."
