Apurva Asrani on homophobic attack: It wasn't just about one man's hate

Apurva Asrani
recently put up an Instagram post in which he wrote about a distressing homophobic incident that happened at his
north Goa
residence. In the post, he mentioned how a drunk neighbour hurled slurs at him and his partner Neeraj (Kadamboor) over a parking dispute.
'He called Neeraj and me dirty homos, freaks, hijras – and stormed around the complex hurling slurs at us.
.. trying to shame us for being gay,' Apurva wrote on Instagram.
When the couple reported the incident to their housing association, the initial response was tepid. 'There were people who said, 'Oh, this shouldn't have happened,' but very quickly, the conversation moved on to pool timings,' the
Made in Heaven
editor told us. He further added, "If a woman said she was harassed it would have been a very different response.
Some neighbors said, 'Just settle it, man to man'. I realized people don't actually understand that we are not just two neighbors fighting. This is somebody who is taking on centuries of oppression, slur, and taking that as the backing and threaten us. I am a National Award-winning filmmaker, I have bought this house with my good, and hard-earned money.
I should not be feeling like this. If I am feeling like this, what will be happening to the younger kids who haven't got this kind of privilege.

We want him evicted."
The couple demanded action — both from the housing association and from the landlord of the offender, who stays in the UK. 'The homeowner has just responded saying, that they have issued him a two week notice for eviction. But he's requesting for more time. Now, it came back to us – Should we show mercy? Or should we stand our ground? However, I stand for so many like us. The number of times I have been evicted from housing societies just because I'm gay.
It used to be horrible. I thought one day I'll buy my home, and it won't happen. I think today it's time for a homophobe to be evicted. So, I hope he actually does get out within two weeks,' he shared.
He added, "I've realized that more than being homophobic or apathetic, people are just ignorant. They don't understand the vulnerability. You're living almost living in sin with another man. All these things are used against you. If we want change, we can't just be victims sitting there saying, you've all wronged us. I was very upset. I felt very vulnerable till I took decisive action. The moment I began acting on this, I don't feel that sense of disappointment.

‘We did something that mattered': a bird rescue story melts hearts online

In a viral video, a man and his friend are seen rescuing a baby bird that had fallen into a roadside drain, while the distressed mother bird cries out for help. In the video, a bird—likely the baby's mother—is anxiously flying around a drain and crying loudly. The two men stop, remove the drain cover, and discover a small baby bird trapped below. Without hesitation, one of them enters the drain to retrieve the tiny creature. His friend then gently places the rescued bird near its mother. The video was shared on Instagram along with a heartfelt caption, 'While walking with a friend around 10 p.m., we heard a bird crying near a drain. At first, it just sounded like noise, but it didn't stop. Then the bird flew toward us and back to the drain, still crying. Something about the way it moved made me stop. It felt like it was trying to get our attention. 'We walked over and looked into the drain and there it was. A baby bird had fallen inside. For a moment, we didn't know what to do. Should we call 911? or Was it okay to lift the cover ourselves? But the cries kept going, and it didn't feel right to just walk away. 'So we took the risk. We lifted the cover and we reached down to pick up the baby bird. We set it down gently near its mother. She didn't fly off. She just stayed close to it. And something in the way she stood there quiet now, almost still felt like a kind of peace. Like she was saying thank you. 'In that moment, I felt something real. A mother's love is the same in every living thing loud, strong, and full of fight. And tonight, I'm just glad we listened. We did something that mattered, and it feels good. I'm proud of us.' The video has struck a chord online, amassing over 978 thousand likes and 120 thousand comments. Many users praised the compassion shown by the duo. A third comment read, 'Not all heroes wear capes. That was awesome.'

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sànchez's Venice wedding: venue, guest list, outfits, and protest; everything you need to know

Jeff Bezos-Lauren Sanchez Wedding: Two years after Amazon founder Jeff Bezos got engaged to Emmy-winning journalist Lauren Sánchez in Europe, the couple is now all set to tie the knot at a lavish wedding ceremony in Italy's Venice. Although the high-profile couple has not officially shared the details of the wedding, the celebrations will begin in Venice on June 24, the Associated Press reported. Those closest to the couple believe this wedding will be far from ordinary. 'I think it's gonna be like a Princess Di thing,' Sánchez's older brother, Paul Sánchez, told TMZ in March 2025. 'It's gonna be an amazing event. It's gonna be star-studded and fun.' From potential venues to the star-studded Hollywood guest list, top-tier planners, and even where the bride is finding the dress, here is everything we know so far about the highly anticipated Bezos-Sánchez wedding. Putting to rest earlier rumours of a lavish $600 million winter wedding in Aspen, Colorado, Bezos and Sànchez will tie the knot in Venice. According to PEOPLE, the news was addressed by Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro, who confirmed the couple's nuptials will take place in the historic city. 'The many speculations and fake news circulating about Jeff Bezos' wedding are completely unfounded,' Brugnaro said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. He also added that the celebration would be intimate and well-managed. 'Only 200 guests will be invited, and the event won't disrupt the city,' he shared. The mayor further informed that the city is closely coordinating with event organisers to ensure zero disruption to residents and their daily livelihoods. 'We are mutually working and supporting the organisers to ensure that the event will be absolutely respectful of the fragility and uniqueness of the city,' the statement read. According to a June 2025 report by the Associated Press, the couple is making a conscious effort to support local businesses, sourcing approximately 80 per cent of their wedding supplies from Venetian vendors. Among those contributing is Rosa Salva, the city's oldest pastry shop, which is crafting goody bags for guests. Laguna B, a renowned design studio known for its handblown Murano glass, is also involved in the festivities. While Bezos and Sánchez have not officially disclosed the exact location, several possibilities have been reported. According to some reports, the wedding may take place aboard Bezos' $500 million superyacht, Koru. San Giorgio Maggiore is another potential wedding spot. The island is known for its historic church and cultural centre. Another venue reportedly is the Scuola Grande della Misericordia, a centuries-old waterfront building with rich Venetian history. As for their upcoming wedding, the guest list promises to be just as glamorous as the couple's engagement guests. As reported by PEOPLE, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner have been invited, along with Karlie Kloss and Joshua Kushner. Sánchez's longtime friends Kris Jenner and Kim Kardashian are also rumoured to be attending. Additionally, two of her fellow Blue Origin spaceflight passengers, Katy Perry and Gayle King, may be part of the celebrations. The report also shared that the couple will stay at the luxurious Aman Venice, a historic hotel on the Grand Canal where George and Amal Clooney got married in 2014. The guests will reportedly stay at four more of the city's top hotels, including the St. Regis Venice, the Gritti Palace, Hotel Danieli, and the Belmond Hotel Cipriani. Guests have been encouraged to make charitable donations rather than bringing gifts. As a return gift, the guests will receive curated goody bags featuring Murano glass pieces from design studio Laguna B and artisanal pastries from the local bakery Rosa Salva. Fashion icon Anna Wintour has reportedly designed Sánchez's wedding dress. However, Sánchez and Bezos were spotted attending a fitting at a Dolce & Gabbana boutique in Milan in March this year, creating a buzz around the bride-to-be's wedding looks. Luxury hotels across Venice, along with many of the city's water taxis, have been fully booked ahead of the high-profile wedding. According to Italian media reports, the influx of celebrity guests and preparations for the grand wedding could result in parts of the city being temporarily shut down. Residents are also concerned about 'mass tourism' or 'overtourism'. Locals argue that the increasing volume of visitors has driven residents out and caused lasting damage to the city's fragile historical sites. Critics have also slammed the city officials for prioritising the 'ultra-wealthy' over the needs of locals.

Actor Viineet Kumar Siingh's wife Ruchira on him being stranded in Dubai: I panicked, darr laga rehta hai aaj kal

Actor Viineet Kumar Siingh was stranded at the Dubai airport on Monday night amidst the precautionary closure of airspace in several parts of the Middle East (Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait) after Iran's missile strikes on US establishments. Scheduled to board at 9:40 PM, he arrived around 3:45 AM in Mumbai after the delay. Actor Viineet Kumar Siingh and wife-actor Ruchira Singh(Photos; Instagram) On reaching India, the Chhaava actor shared a post on his Instagram. Back home, his wife-actor Ruchira Singh had a sigh of relief after a stressful Monday night. She shared, 'He came early in the morning after being stranded for some time. We were continuously on call with him till they flew. I was continuously checking the flight status to get minute-by-minute information of his safe landing.' Instagram posts by Viineet Kumar Siingh(Photos: Instagram) Spelling out her fear, Ruchira said, 'When he told me about the situation, I panicked, especially after the turn of events. Nowadays, so much is happening around the world…so 'darr toh laga hi rehta hain.' On top of that, war situations, flight scenarios, and what not! It's sad. You might not be in a serious situation, but still, you do get anxious. I was very worried yesterday, but now everything is fine and I'm happy that he is home.' The actor said that her husband was in Dubai to address a global summit. 'His entire schedule was very tight, and then while returning, this happened. He was very tired, so the situation was surely exhausting.' On Monday night, Viineet posted: 'I am at Dubai Airport. 9:23 pm Dubai Time. Immigration done. Waiting at the gate for my flight (airplane emoji). Fingers crossed." After landing in Mumbai, Viineet told News18, 'We were clueless around 10 PM. Then we got the news that the boarding would start. The flight took off a little late, but everything is fine. Emirates Airlines and Dubai airport staff helped all.'
