MHA approves first ever cadre review of BSF personnel
The BSF said in a statement on Wednesday (August 13, 2025) that the Government of India had approved the cadre review of BSF Group B and C employees, spanning from Constable to Inspector, and its implementation had already begun. 'The implementation will cover a total immediate promotions of 23,710 personnel. 8,116 promotion orders in different ranks have already been issued today,' the BSF said.
Since the inception of the force in 1965, this is the first time that such a review is being carried out, a BSF official said. In the absence of the review, many Constables retired from service after just one or two promotions, against the projected five promotions up to the rank of Assistant Commandant in few cases.
BSF is deployed along the Pakistan and Bangladesh borders. It is also deployed for internal security duties and operations in State affected by Left Wing Extremism (LWE).
The review is expected to improve promotion avenues from Constable to Inspector, providing significant respite to personnel from existing stagnation, thereby enhancing overall morale and professional development of the force's personnel, the BSF said.
To address the issue of stagnation among the junior ranks in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), the MHA in May sanctioned the process of granting the next senior 'honorary rank' to retiring CAPF personnel. The insignia would entail no financial benefits, the MHA had said in an order. The honorary senior rank would be accorded to Constables, Head Constables, Assistant Sub-Inspectors, and Sub-Inspectors on the day of their retirement.

NEW DELHI: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Thursday announced and released the list of 1,090 recipients of medals in different categories including gallantry for Police, Fire Services, Home Guard & Civil Defence and Correctional Services on the occasion of Independence Day on Friday. Ás the country's internal security challenges are primarily posed in three theatres – Jammu & Kashmir, Naxal-affected areas and the North East, the highest number of Gallantry Medals has gone to personnel of J&K Police, followed by members of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), who majorly in anti-Left Wing extremism operations and the Border Security Force (BSF), guarding India's sensitive frontiers with Pakistan and Bangladesh.' The J&K Police have once again led the pack of state police organisations and the Central Armed Police Forces by securing a record 127 Gallantry Medals on the occasion of Independence Day 2025. Among the awardees include late Deputy SP Humayun Muzamil Bhat, who was killed during a fierce encounter in Kokernag, has been posthumously honoured for his ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

16 BSF personnel get gallantry medals for Operation Sindoor
NEW DELHI: Sixteen Border Security Force (BSF) personnel have been awarded gallantry medals for displaying "conspicuous bravery" and "unmatched valour" during Operation Sindoor against Pakistan. The medals for gallantry (GM) for these troops, some of whom destroyed enemy surveillance cameras while others neutralised drone attacks, were announced by the Union government on the eve of the 79th Independence Day. The paramilitary force is tasked with guarding the 2,290-km-long India-Pakistan International Border (IB), apart from the Line of Control (LoC), under the Army's operational control along the western flank of the country. "This Independence Day, 16 Brave Seema Praharis (border guards) are being awarded Gallantry Medals for their conspicuous bravery & unmatched valour, for being resolute & steadfast during the Ops Sindoor. The medals are a testament to the Nation's faith & trust reposed in India's First Line of Defence: The Border Security Force," the BSF said in a social media post. Under Operation Sindoor undertaken by the three defence forces along with the BSF on the border, India targeted terrorist and military facilities in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir from May 7 to 10 in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed. Two BSF personnel were killed in action while seven were injured during the operation.
