Odisha allows women to work in night shifts, written consent mandatory
The Labour and Employees' State Insurance Department issued a detailed guideline, allowing women to work in night shifts in factories, shops and other commercial establishments.
At least three women employees should be there on the night shift, and adequate transportation facilities with a GPS-tracking system to pick and drop them should be arranged, it said.
No adolescent women will be allowed to work, whether as an employee or otherwise, in any establishment during the night, it said.
'The employer shall provide toilet or washroom and drinking water facilities near the workplace where such women employees are employed, with provisions of closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance and proper lighting, including the passages towards conveniences,' it added.
The decision will increase employment opportunities for women, the notification said.
The state government has recently made amendments to the Odisha Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1956, allowing women to work in night shifts.
Labour Minister Ganesh Ram Singkhuntia said, 'After getting instructions from the Centre, we have allowed women to work at night. Female employees will have to give their written consent, expressing their willingness to work at night.' The opposition BJD, however, criticised the government.
'Women will have to give a self-declaration to work on the night shifts. It means they will have to protect themselves. By doing so, the government is trying to give up its responsibility,' BJD leader Pramila Mallik alleged.

State announces saffron colour code for govt buildings
1 2 Bhubaneswar: State govt has announced a new directive mandating a uniform saffron colour code for all govt buildings. The decision requires all newly constructed govt structures to adopt the saffron hue, while existing buildings are expected to transition to the new colour scheme during their next repair or renovation phase. The new code "shall come into force with immediate effect", read a notification issued on July 30 by Sanjay Singh, principal secretary of the works department. It applies to all govt departments and enterprises. The department has specified RGB shades resembling light saffron for exterior walls and deep saffron for the borders. The govt had specified the saffron colour code for school buildings in March. In Oct last year, the govt had changed colour of school uniforms from the previous green and white — associated with BJD — to light brown, chocolate and clay-baked yellow. The BJP govt last year rebranded LAccMI (Location Accessible Multi-modal Initiative) bus service as Mukhya Mantri Bus Seva, adding a new fleet which is saffron in colour. Similarly, the govt introduced a double-decker bus service between Puri and Bhubaneswar in Jan l, with the vehicles sporting a saffron hue. The decision to implement a uniform saffron colour code for govt buildings in Odisha has sparked a debate among political parties and the public. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is this legal? Techno Mag Learn More Undo Critics argued that the move is an attempt to impose the ruling BJP's ideological preferences, while supporters claimed it is a necessary step to break away from the long-standing influence of the BJD's colour scheme. BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty criticised the govt for focusing on superficial changes instead of addressing pressing issues like law and order. "Amid the state's ongoing challenges with crime and insecurity, the colour code initiative is a distraction from more urgent governance matters," he said. Congress spokesperson Rajani Mohanty expressed disappointment with the govt's priorities, arguing that the focus should be on job creation and justice rather than cosmetic changes. "The govt has failed to deliver on its promises. It should concentrate on more substantive issues," he said. BJP spokesperson Dilip Mohanty defended the decision, emphasising that the new colour code is a corrective measure to address the dominance of BJD's green in public spaces. "The change is not politically motivated but rather a move towards a more neutral and appropriate aesthetic for govt buildings," he said. Mohanty further said that the public's response to the govt's initiatives has been overwhelmingly positive, suggesting that the electorate will ultimately judge the effectiveness of the administration's policies.

Congress to demonstrate in various parts of Odisha over crimes against women
Last Updated: Bhubaneswar, Aug 6 (PTI) The opposition Congress in Odisha on Wednesday announced a series of demonstrations it will hold in various districts to protest the rise in crimes against women. The 'Nari Naya Yatra' will begin on August 8 and continue till August 14, state Congress president Bhakta Charan Das said. Congress members will gherao the DGP office in Cuttack at 10 am on August 8, demanding the arrest of the three people who allegedly set a girl on fire in Puri's Balanga, he said. 'We had given a seven-day ultimatum to the police to arrest the culprits," Das said. On August 10, the Congress will organise a 'yatra' at the girl's village in Balanga. The march will start from the girl's village, and reach Nimapada town, where a public meeting will be held. Das urged women, students, and the youth to join the programme in large numbers. The girl's family had earlier alleged that she was set on fire by three miscreants on July 19. Following her death on August 2, police claimed that no one else was involved in her death. Later, her father also issued a video statement, supporting the police's claim, stating that she ended her life due to emotional distress. Das said a similar march will also be held in Balasore on August 14, demanding justice for the student who allegedly set herself on fire following inaction over her sexual harassment complaint against a professor. The march will start near the Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College, he said. The 20-year-old student died while undergoing treatment at AIIM-Bhubaneswar on July 14. Meanwhile, the BJD also called a six-hour hartal in Puri district on August 7, demanding justice for the girl who succumbed to burn injuries. The hartal will begin at 6 am and continue till 12 pm, BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty said.
