NFL buys 10% stake in ESPN, which buys NFL Network, RedZone
Federal regulators must approve the transaction, a process that could take several months, according to the league. Until the deal closes, fans are unlikely to see any significant changes to ESPN or NFL Network.
NFL team owners also must approve the deal, but that is seen as little more than a formality given the expanded reach on offer for NFL programming.
"I think we've hooked up with the best partners we can have," said New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, chairman of the NFL's media committee.
"That will help expose us to more homes, more of an international audience. Strategically, we have to grow our salary cap and can only do that by -- if we want to keep labor peace, we have to grow our audience. This transaction helps us to do that."
Global growth opportunities for the NFL, which already plays games overseas every season, played a key role in motivating the NFL to get terms of the deal sorted.
"We're hooking up with the strongest sports amalgamation of sports product," Kraft said. "We're giving them what I believe is the best content, and they're giving us the greatest operational company to grow our audience globally.
"This is a way for us to broaden our audience. We've done so much. I don't think there's any company like (ESPN owners) Disney and ESPN in doing sports, all sports. We need to expose our product to more people and a greater variety of people."

Power-packed David slams 83 as Australia beat South Africa in 1st T20
After being sent in, the hosts were all out for 178 on the final delivery of their 20 overs in the first game of international cricket in Australia's tropical north for 17 years. Cameron Green (35 off 13) was the only other batsman to get going, with left-arm quick Kwena Maphaka bagging 4-20 as South Africa bowled out Australia for the first time in a T20. Rickelton and Stubbs (37) knuckled down in a threatening 72-run stand but Hazlewood struck again with two wickets in an over to shatter their momentum. South Africa's hopes were all but over when Adam Zampa matched Hazlewood's feat in the next over. "It got close, but we were pretty far from our best tonight," Markram said. Fleetwood clings to one-stroke PGA St. Jude lead over Rose
Fleetwood closed with a bogey to fire a one-under par 69 and stand on 14-under 196 after 54 holes at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee, in the first FedEx Cup playoff event. "I've been really good off the tee, which is a strong quality around this golf course," Fleetwood said. "At times you would get into a nice flow and feel comfortable with your routine." Early Fleetwood stumble Fleetwood carried a three-stroke lead over Rose into the third round but stumbled early, following a birdie at the second hole with a double bogey at the par-five third, finding water with his second shot and a greenside bunker with his fourth. Rose was in hot pursuit with a 16-foot birdie putt at the third, a stunning 36-foot birdie putt at the fifth and a tap-in birdie at the sixth after his approach landed inches from the hole. Fleetwood made a bogey at the seventh to leave Rose alone in the lead and Rose followed with a birdie at the seventh, but Rose found water at the ninth and made bogey while Fleetwood birdied the ninth to share the lead again. The top 70 on the season points list qualified for this week's tournament with the top 50 advancing to next week's BMW Championship. The top 30 after the BMW advance to the Tour Championship.
