BBC axing 'masterpiece' sci fi film and fans have just days to watch

The sci-fi epic was released in 2017 and is a direct sequel to the 1982 movie Blade Runner Science fiction enthusiasts have only a handful of days remaining to dive into one of the most beloved contemporary sci-fi movies, which critics have hailed as a "masterpiece in every sense of the world". ‌ Acclaimed director Denis Villeneuve, who's set to helm the next James Bond film, stunned audiences in 2017 with his eagerly awaited follow-up to Ridley Scott's legendary Blade Runner. ‌ This sequel, which many devotees actually favour over the original, has been streaming without charge on BBC iPlayer, though this opportunity is about to expire as the broadcaster will relinquish the rights within days. ‌ The 2017 revival unfolds 30 years following the first instalment, transporting viewers once again into a bleak, precipitation-drenched Los Angeles teeming with synthetic beings and existential questions about what constitutes genuine existence. Ryan Gosling delivers an exceptional portrayal as K, and despite the movie avoiding heavy exposition and lengthy conversations, he succeeds in prompting audiences to contemplate the true essence of humanity, reports the Express. Throughout his odyssey, he's accompanied by an outstanding ensemble cast including Harrison Ford, who returns to his iconic character, plus compelling turns from Ana de Armas, Dave Bautista and Jared Leto. Critics embraced the picture enthusiastically, with renowned cinematographer Roger Deakins claiming an Academy Award for his contribution, whilst the production also secured the trophy for outstanding visual effects plus recognition for its audio and set design. The soundtrack for this film warrants special mention, with Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch's synth-heavy score evoking sci-fi nostalgia whilst honouring the genre's greatest works. ‌ Boasting an impressive "Certified Fresh" rating of 88% from both critics and viewers on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences are urging others to give it a watch. One viewer said: "A masterpiece in every sense of the word. The acting, the visuals, the story. It's damn near perfect. I like the original Blade Runner, but this is so, so much better in every way... The peak of modern cinema." However, don't worry if you missed the 1980s original, as one critic noted: "2049 is able to exist both as a masterful sequel and/or stand-alone film in the universe, which showcases Villeneuve's massive skill as a storyteller and further validates him as one of the best visionaries of our generation." Critic Josh Wilding echoed this sentiment, declaring: "A masterpiece pure and simple, Blade Runner 2049 does not disappoint and will keep hardcore fans and newcomers alike equally happy with what they're seeing." The film remains available to stream free on BBC iPlayer, though with its departure scheduled for August 25, you've got just days left before you'll need to pay for rental or splash out on a pricey streaming subscription.

Alex Reid's friends confirm 'final straw' that made him expose Katie Price in bombshell video

Katie Price has found herself embroiled in her latest controversy after her ex-husband Alex Reid shared footage of her waving around a wad of cash while bankrupt. Alex Reid's pals have shared the breaking point in his long-standing rift with Katie Price that caused him to 'expose' a video of her watching around a wad of cash while bankrupt. In the footage, the 47-year-old is seen lounging around on the couch, seemingly "enjoying counting" the pile of money in front of her saying: "There's loads here.. I'm just sorting it out." ‌ The former glamour model, who was left bankrupt twice over debts totalling more than £3m, was asked by daughter Princess, who she shares with ex-husband Peter Andre, if she would help pay her school fees. Katie replies: "Your dad can sit on that' before lifting a middle finger. ‌ Sporting white jodhpurs and sitting beside a Christmas tree, she continued: 'Does he go on about it a lot? Well it's tough because I'm in bankruptcy to next May now." In the clip, Katie also refers to a property - 'my London flat' - which fans believe is the property allocated to Peter Andre as part of their divorce settlement. ‌ The video was unveiled this week by Price's ex and former Big Brother star Alex Reid, who warned in a statement that 'the truth will now be heard'. The one minute and 38 second long video, believed to have been filmed in late 2020, has been sent to Price's bankruptcy trustee who continues to 'seek realisations from various third parties'. A close friend of Alex's has told The Sun that his final straw came when Katie defended herself amid the ongoing controversy surrounding Princess' new show, The Princess Diaries, and the details of a custody battle between Katie and her ex-husband Peter Andre were revealed. ‌ Katie's spokesperson released a statement responding to Peter's claims that Princess and Junior have been in his custody since 2018 for their safety, the Mirror reports. At the time, Katie's team said: "Kate is in a much better and clear headspace and is at peace with the situation. "This was in the past, and she doesn't feel the need to bring up tit for tat comments, but more importantly she's dealing with this the right way and it's now in her lawyers hands. Kate will no longer be gaslighted and bullied as she once was." ‌ According to Alex's close friends, it was this statement that made him leak the video of Katie counting the cash. Speaking to The Sun, the insider said: "When Alex saw Peter's statement last Thursday night, he wasn't necessarily planning to come out with his own damning takedown just days later, but then there was a comment that Katie's rep released after Peter's post that literally tipped Alex over the edge and set these wheels in motion." The source added that it was the words 'Katie is at peace' that sent Alex over the edge. ‌ "Alex read that comment that 'Katie is at peace' over and over, and he was just crushed, because he most certainly is not at peace. "It was those words that touched such a nerve for him, out of everything Katie has said, because the trauma of everything he has been through since the end of his marriage to her is still very raw. ‌ "He hasn't healed from it, and he remains a very vulnerable person. It's affected not just him, but his entire family and loved ones. He feels like Katie just washes her hands of stuff and takes no accountability - saying she is at peace feels so dismissive, hypocritical and absolutely ridiculous." After the video was released, Katie issued a statement, insisting that the cash in the video didn't belong to her. A representative for the star said: "This is a video that was shared with Katie's Trustee in Bankruptcy several months ago and Katie has fully complied with the Trustee's investigations into the same. ‌ "The cash featured did not belong to Katie and the property referred to was dealt with in the financial settlement proceedings arising out of Katie's divorce from Peter Andre. "Katie's Trustee in Bankruptcy is aware of the property and has undoubtedly investigated whether the same ought to be comprised in the bankruptcy estate." The mum-of-five has been bankrupt twice, first in 2019 over debts totalling £3.5m, including £970,639 to HMRC and then again last March over a second £761,994 unpaid HMRC demand for money earned while she was already bankrupt. ‌ Creditors include Reid who is owed £175k in High Court damages and costs he was awarded after Katie allegedly revealed a sex tape of him that he says was filmed without his consent. Along with the leaked footage, Alex shared a statement saying he was "spearheading a campaign to expose the truth". He said: "Over the years you have seen countless stories by Katie Price directed at me, Peter, Keiran and others. Today I want to be clear. I am spearheading a campaign to expose the truth. "This isn't about gossip but about evidence. It's not about rumour, it's about reality. After years of silence, the time has finally come to reveal all.'

ITV Good Morning Britain fans make same complaint as they brand show 'unwatchable'

More info Get the latest Edinburgh Live breaking news on WhatsApp Good Morning Britain viewers lodged identical complaints as they declared the programme "unwatchable". Throughout Wednesday's (August 20) instalment of the ITV show, presenters Adil Ray and Kate Garraway brought audiences the latest developments from Britain and internationally. Sean Fletcher was also present in the studio to deliver additional daily news coverage, whilst Laura Tobin provided regular meteorological updates. Kate and Adil informed audiences about asylum seekers confronting hotel evictions, and the additional service charges accompanying pub purchases. They also encountered a mother advocating for stricter young driver regulations following her 17 year old son's death alongside three teenage companions in a tragic road accident, reports the Mirror. Nevertheless, programme audiences quickly grew exasperated with the presenter selection and a passionate discussion regarding the government's asylum accommodation proposals. "I can usually watch this but this is just unwatchable," one person wrote on X (formerly Twitter), with another adding: "45 minutes of ITV nonsense." A third said: "Goodness, the show is a tough listen these days," with a fourth viewer similarly sharing: "Kate and Adil, thanks for the heads up, time to turn over. No chance." A fifth fan echoed the sentiment, saying: "GMB is so out of touch with the views of the British public, that's why GMB is sinking quicker than the Titanic." The development follows ITV audiences "switching off" mere minutes into GMB earlier this week. Adil made his comeback to the programme following a lengthy absence, with numerous viewers expressing their annoyance. The Citizen Khan actor also engaged in a heated exchange with Joey Essex after delivering several harsh criticisms of the reality personality. Adil memorably branded Joey a "baked bean" prior to his forthcoming boxing match, before questioning the financial compensation he'd earn for participating in the bout. Viewers rapidly flocked to social media to voice their unease, with one individual posting: "I've just watched the worst interview ever recorded on TV. Adil Ray trying to be funny and belittling Joey Essex. Cringe."
