No abuse found in UTM Palapes cadet death, says defence minister
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the findings involved input from multiple ministries, including Defence, Home, Health, and Higher Education.
The 22-year-old trainee died a day after starting training on July 27 at the Army Basic Training Centre in Ulu Tiram, Johor.
Mohamed Khaled stated all training activities followed established guidelines and procedures.
Testimonies from over 30 witnesses, including trainees and instructors, confirmed no abuse occurred during the session.
A post-mortem at Kota Tinggi Hospital, attended by military medical personnel, verified initial aid complied with standard procedures.
The hospital report found no signs of injury on the body, aligning with police findings.
The exact cause of death will be determined after a full report is completed in one to two months.
Mohamed Khaled urged against linking the incident to a recent student death case in Sabah.
He assured full ministry cooperation if any indications of abuse or criminal elements emerge.
Syamsul Haris, the eldest of three siblings, was undergoing Combat Inoculation training at PULADA.

PARIT, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- A special committee has been established at both the state and district levels to effectively address bullying issues in Perak schools, ensuring that cases are managed appropriately to prevent unwanted incidents. Perak Education, Higher Education, Youth and Sports Committee chairman, Khairudin Abu Hanipah, said the State Education Director chairs the committee, while at the District Education Office (PPD) level, it is chaired by the District Education Officer. 'This committee has existed before, but we have strengthened it with the involvement of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Social Welfare Department (JKM), the Ministry of Health (KKM), and other agencies. 'In addition, the 12 PPDs in Perak are now actively monitoring, including carrying out spot checks at school hostels at night to observe prep or evening study activities,' he told reporters after meeting 68 participants of the 2025 Mercedes Classic Merdeka Convoy at Dataran Cempaka Sari here. Khairudin said this comprehensive approach is crucial to ensure bullying issues are addressed collectively, thereby preventing any form of severe abuse that could lead to tragic incidents. The priority is to ensure students can fully focus on their studies in a safe, harmonious environment free from oppression, he said. Court to hear bid to exhume UTM Palapes cadet's body for second post-mortem on Aug 25
SHAH ALAM, Aug 19 —The High Court here today set Aug 25 to hear the notice of motion to exhume the body of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Reserve Officers Training Unit (Palapes) trainee cadet Syamsul Haris Shamsudin for a second post-mortem. Judge Datuk Bhupindar Singh Gurcharan Singh Preet set the date after the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC), named the respondents in the application, requested time to file the affidavit-in-reply. The IGP and the AGC were represented by Senior Federal Counsel Nurul Huda Mohd Salehuddin and Selangor Director of Prosecutions, Kalmizah Salleh, respectively. The two respondents were given until this Friday to file their affidavit-in-reply. Syamsul Haris, 22, died during training at the Army Combat Training Centre in Ulu Tiram on July 28. The Johor police had said that a post-mortem found no signs of criminal injury, but the deceased's mother, Ummu Haiman Bee Daulatgun, 45, called for an inquiry after finding 'mysterious bruises' on her son's body.
