Mexico Is Facing a Second — and Worse — ‘China Shock'

Bloomberg17-07-2025
Mexico's economic future is suspended between two superpowers. Its trade-heavy economy sends nearly 80 cents of every dollar in exports to the US, leaving it vulnerable to President Donald Trump's threats. Meanwhile, rising imports from China threaten its bid to grow its economy through advanced manufacturing.
The US and Mexico are each other's largest trading partners, exchanging more than $800 billion worth of goods and services back and forth each year. Intermediary goods lead these exchanges, with circuit boards, engines and other parts coming together in the form of vehicles, electronics and planes. Atop these North American manufacturing supply chains are cross-border sales of fuel, grains, produce, machinery and medical devices.

L3Harris Technologies, Inc. (LHX) Unveils New Solid Rocket Motor Facility

L3Harris Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:LHX) is among the 11 Best Large Cap Defense Stocks to Buy According to Analysts. On August 4, the company showcased its newest Solid Rocket Motor (SRM) production facility in Huntsville, Alabama, in a ceremony that was attended by local and state leaders and customers. The facility, known as Advanced Manufacturing Facility – South (AMF-South), is larger than the size of six football fields and has been designed to support surging defense production demands, including President Trump's Golden Dome project. The AMF-South specializes in producing inert parts for solid rocket motors, such as nozzles, aft closures, and exit cones. L3Harris Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:LHX) has invested over $20 million in renovations to support the facility. The firm's Title III Defense Production Act cooperative agreement with the DoD has also helped to fund additional expenses. The facility is designed to be scalable and flexible. It is currently supporting programs such as the Standard Missile, Javelin, and Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System, with plans to expand to other initiatives in the future. Ken Bedingfield, President at L3Harris Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:LHX)'s Aerojet Rocketdyne, stated the following on the facility's opening: 'Solid rocket motors remain essential to the vast majority of critical defense programs that protect our communities, military and allies. Our growth in Huntsville represents another significant investment we are making to boost production capacity of critical components, and we're proud that they are being made in Alabama.' While we acknowledge the potential of LHX as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk. Why Shares of Apple Are Surging Today

Key Points Earlier this week, Apple announced a $600 billion investment in the U.S. That seemed to lower tensions between the company and President Donald Trump. One Wall Street analyst views the event as positive and raised his price target on the stock. 10 stocks we like better than Apple › Shares of Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) traded nearly 4.3% higher as of 2:35 p.m. ET today. Analysts are more optimistic that the company has squashed some of the tariff drama with President Donald Trump's administration. Investing $600 billion in America will pay off for shareholders Many large tech companies have been in the crosshairs of the Trump administration, which seeks to bring more manufacturing back to the U.S. Trump recently announced that he would slap a 100% tariff on semiconductor imports unless companies are building or investing in the U.S. Earlier this week, Apple, which is one of the hardest-hit large tech companies by tariffs, announced a $600 billion U.S. investment. While it sounds costly, it's the better alternative to higher tariffs, Melius Research analyst Ben Reitzes wrote in a note today. Reitzes also reiterated a buy rating on the stock and raised his price target by $20 to $260. "It relieves Apple from paying incremental tariffs on U.S.-bound iPhones from India," Reitzes said, adding that a stronger iPhone production cycle could begin in the fall. "We are going to take a risk here and raise our target and our numbers, taking out a huge portion of our tariff hits." One problem potentially solved Apple's stock has struggled this year because of how much of the company's production is abroad in China, India, and Vietnam. Even after the big run this week, shares are still down about 5.5% on the year. The company has also struggled to convince investors that it has a strong road map in place for artificial intelligence. While that challenge remains, removing some of the tariff overhang is certainly a big step in the right direction and allows the company to focus more on its core business. Trump's crypto 401(k) executive order: Risks of saving for retirement in alternative assets, and who stands to benefit most

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday that opens the door to allowing alternative assets like cryptocurrencies, private equity, and real estate into 401(k) retirement accounts. Here's what to know. Oprah Winfrey says highly effective leaders use the 3-sentence rule to make every meeting more productive August full moon tonight? The 'Sturgeon Moon' is coming: Here's when to see it—and what it means for the Perseid meteor shower This con is robbing seniors blind—and growing fast What does the executive order say? The executive order gives the secretary of labor 180 days to review the guidelines that determine the rules for 401(k)s under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974, known as ERISA. In short, the order calls for the Labor Department to clarify its position on alternative assets. (Under ERISA, employers have a fiduciary responsibility to ensure 401(k) investments are prudent and don't have onerous fees.) As Fast Company previously reported, during Trump's first term, the Department of Labor issued a letter suggesting private equity options could be included in 401(k) and 403(b) defined-contribution plans as part of a target-date fund or another managed fund. Why is this concerning for 401(k) holders? Traditionally, private market assets haven't been included in 401(k)s, for the most part, because their 'high fees, lack of transparency, and longer lockup periods make them riskier investments,' according to CNBC. However, they have made their way into pension funds and university endowments. Why is this a big win for fund managers? This could give fund managers access to a staggering $12 trillion—yes, trillion—and create a new source of funding besides traditional stocks, bonds, and cash, per The Guardian. Who stands to benefit the most from the order? Trump's executive order is yet another example of this administration's support of cryptocurrencies and push to loosen the regulations around digital currencies. Not surprisingly, the prices of some cryptocurrencies are up today on the news. By early afternoon on Friday, the price of Ether (ETH) jumped over 4%. Bitcoin (BTC), which jumped 1% on Thursday on the news, was down slightly, by less than 1%. Meanwhile, stock in Robinhood (HOOD), which offers crypto products, was up 4.5%.
