Man who helped bomb 2017 Ariana Grande concert charged with attempted murder for prison guard attack
Hashem Abedi, 28, left three of the officers hospitalized with serious injuries after the attack on April 11 at the high-security HMP Frankland in Durham, England, the Guardian reported.
Abedi allegedly attacked the four guards by dumping hot cooking oil over them and stabbing them with a makeshift knife, the outlet said.

Abedi was sentenced in 2020 to at least 55 years in prison after being found guilty of 22 murders for helping his brother, Salman Abedi, plan a mass slaughter at the Manchester Arena show that also left hundreds injured.
He was transferred to another prison after the attack on the guards and can be prosecuted under counterterrorism protocol — allowing prosecutors to argue the assault was terror-motivated, BBC reported.
Counter Terrorism Policing North East carried out a 'thorough investigation' of the incident with Durham Constabulary and HMP Frankland, the authority told the outlet.

Although Abedi was in Libya during the May 2017 attack, he was convicted of helping his brother plot and prepare his massacre at the Manchester Arena, where seven of the dead were children as young as 8 years old.
Abedi helped source, buy, stockpile, and transport the components for his brother's bomb, using a number of phones, vehicles, and addresses in preparation for the attack, prosecutors said.
'He has blood on his hands even if he didn't detonate the bomb,' Max Hill, Britain's director of public prosecutions, said at his trial.
Another 237 concertgoers were injured, and 670 survivors reported suffering from psychological trauma. The 'No Tears Left to Cry' singer, Grande, has also said she suffers post-traumatic stress disorder.

Abedi will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Sept 18, records indicate.
The Ministry of Justice will do a full investigation into the incident.

As well as being given an equal number of shows, the three presenters are being paid equally when it comes to hosting Match of the Day. As it stands, a frontrunner to host the BBC's coverage of the World Cup final next July is yet to emerge, nor has a decision been made as to who that will be. Although it can sometimes be the case when a new host takes over a long-running TV programme, the BBC hasn't conducted any rehearsals with its new presenters ahead of Saturday night's first show. As far as the programme as a spectacle goes, no. The show will largely look the same, albeit with someone different in the host's chair. The iconic theme tune will remain, too. BBC axes Survivor after one series
Survivor has been axed by the BBC. The reality series proved to be a ratings flop, and host Joel Dommett has now confirmed that it won't return for a second series. Joel, 40 - who has also hosted The Masked Singer since 2020 - told The Sun newspaper: "It just shows you how nothing is a given in telly. I thought Survivor would be huge. I thought that would be my job for the next 20 years. "I've done shows and thought that's not coming back and it keeps coming back and then you do something like Survivor, which you think is guaranteed and it doesn't come back." Earlier this year, Joel revealed that he was hoping for a second series of Survivor. The TV star also promised that changes would be made if the show came back. In an interview with the Metro newspaper, he said: 'Fingers crossed … there's a lot of stuff that we would do slightly differently. 'Like with every first series, it's hard, so I think a second series would be amazing. 'Everyone seems to really love it, so I'm excited that – hopefully – [we get to] do another one." The first episode of the rebooted Survivor - which launched in October 2023 - only received 2.6 million viewers, despite airing at the prime-time slot of 8:25pm on a Saturday, after Strictly Come Dancing. Survivor's second episode was then replaced by David Attenborough's Planet Earth III. A TV insider also previously claimed that the BBC was not keen on renewing the programme for another series. The source told the Daily Mail newspaper: 'It has come as a huge surprise that Survivor is coming back. 'It is viewed by many within the Beeb as being a very expensive flop and the general view was that it should – and would – be canned. 'To spend that amount of money on a programme that is watched by such few people surely is a silly way to spend public money."

New Orleans mayor indicted on federal corruption charges
The New Orleans mayor, LaToya Cantrell, was indicted on Friday on federal corruption charges after spending roughly three years under investigation. The indictment against Cantrell came after the September 2024 indictment of local businessman Randy Farrell, who was charged with exchanging gifts with the mayor so that she would allegedly fire a municipal employee who was investigating Farrell's building inspection company. Among the alleged gifts were tickets to a January 2019 New Orleans Saints football game, which was being played with an appearance at the Super Bowl on the line, a cellphone and lunch at an upscale Ruth's Chris Steak House in the city. Cantrell had also drawn scrutiny for an alleged affair with a now retired New Orleans police officer who had served as her bodyguard. The bodyguard, Jeffrey Vappie, allegedly claimed he was at work while he was actually engaging in 'a personal and romantic relationship' with the mayor. Vappie was charged as a co-defendant in Friday's indictment against Cantrell, full details of which were not immediately available, as Guardian reporting partner WWL Louisiana reported. He had previously been charged with wire fraud and lying to FBI agents in July 2024, shortly after he retired from New Orleans' police force. The allegations called to mind the 2018 scandal that cost the Nashville mayor, Megan Barry, her job and centered on an affair with her bodyguard, Robert Forrest. Prosecutors who had obtained the 2024 charges against Vappie have alleged he researched that case online two years earlier. Both Vappie and Farrell have pleaded not guilty to the charges previously filed against them. While the Donald Trump-led US justice department obtained the indictment against Cantrell about seven months into the Republican's second presidency, the federal investigation into the mayor began while Joe Biden – her fellow Democrat – was in his second full year in the Oval Office. Cantrell's lawyer, Eddie Castaing, confirmed to the Associated Press on Friday that an indictment was returned against his client. He also said her name was read aloud by a federal magistrate judge as a defendant. Cantrell, a native of Compton, California, had been a New Orleans city council member before winning election as its mayor in November 2017. She thus became New Orleans's first female mayor and was re-elected four years later. Her second term – which saw the unexpected death of her husband in August 2023 – is due to end in January 2026. Cantrell was term-limited from seeking another stint as mayor, and several candidates have signed up to run to replace her in a primary election set for October. Cantrell on Friday became the first New Orleans mayor charged with federal crimes while still in office. The federal investigation into her began with 2022 subpoenas issued with respect to an image consultant that she employed. Only one other person who has served as New Orleans mayor has been indicted by the US government on federal corruption charges during the city's 307-year history: Ray Nagin. Nagin was New Orleans's mayor when the failure of federal levees there during Hurricane Katrina on 29 August 2005 destroyed the city and caused about 1,400 deaths. He was convicted in 2014 on charges of bribery, honest services wire fraud, money laundering, filing false tax returns and conspiracy, and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
