Girl critical after being hit by ‘speeding' car at Burswood street meet

A teenage girl is fighting for life in hospital after being struck by an allegedly speeding car during an organised car meet at Burswood on Monday night.
WA Police said the 17-year-old was struck by the car on Camfield Drive near Crown Perth around 10pm as a pre-arranged car club meeting was dispersing.
Confronting mobile phone footage shows two cars taking off at speed as a crowd of bystanders watch at the roadside. The second car hits the girl and she flies into the air, the impact of her body shattering the windscreen of the black Honda Civic.
The girl suffered serious internal injuries and was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital in critical condition. The driver, a 25-year-old man, was uninjured.
WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch said he expected the driver to be charged with speeding and dangerous driving.
He confirmed police were aware of the event, with the group of car enthusiasts regularly hosting Monday meets, and that police had been present earlier in the evening, seizing a vehicle.
'[The meets are] normally well-behaved … but it looks like there has been a person allegedly speeding and has hit a pedestrian,' he said.
'I have seen one piece of footage, which is very confronting, of the young girl being hit; I believe there were a number of people filming.'
Blanch said the incident happened at the end of the meet, as people were exiting the area, and the police had left.

Police weren't on site at the time but had been there earlier in the night. An Ascot man has been charged with dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm, in circumstances of aggravation. It's alleged he was speeding when he hit the teen pedestrian. Car enthusiasts say anti-social behaviour is becoming more common at meets like this and they've had enough, some now fearing for their safety and choosing to stay away. "You want to be able to go out and have a good night out with your mates and not have to look over your shoulder in fear," witness Michael Wood said. The impact shattered the car's windscreen but the driver was uninjured. (9News) Premier Roger Cook weighed in today. "We know the reason why these events are so popular amongst young people is because they film it, they post it online, they make it popular, which continues to drive that risky behaviour," he said. Locals say it's another reason the Burswood race track shouldn't go ahead. "This is going to impact and escalate the hooning that's already happening on Canfield drive with the race track happening," Save Burswood Park co-convenor Robin Harvey said. 'We'll be alleging excessive speed was involved, and other organisers have canceled similar meets or events later this week,' Police Commissioner Col Blanch said. The meet was part of a regular event known as Mondaymeets, which draws large crowds of car enthusiasts each week. Blanch said police were present earlier in the evening and had impounded a vehicle just before the crash. 'I think what we will do as a result is crank down even more and make sure that the behaviour of these organised car meets ... what we don't support is reckless and dangerous behavior that results in these tragedies,' he said. Teenage girl critically hurt after being hit by car amid Monday Meets cruise event in Burswood

A teenage girl has been critically injured at a car cruise event in Perth, prompting local car enthusiasts to rally together to denounce hoon behaviour. Major Crash officers are investigating the incident near the Burswood Crown Casino precinct on Monday night. Police said a black Honda Civic struck a 17-year-old girl who was crossing Camfield Drive on foot just before 10pm. She was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital by ambulance and is being treated for critical injuries. The driver of the car, a 25-year-old man, was not injured and is assisting police. WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch said the incident was disappointing and dangerous and alleged speed was a factor. People had gathered in the Crown Casino car park on Monday night as part of an organised car cruise event that began in Jandakot earlier in the evening. The group organising the cruise, Monday Meets Perth, posted on social media saying they were still 'processing how to deal with the events of tonight going forward". 'Our thoughts and best wishes are with the people affected,' they wrote. Earlier in the night when advertising the event, which sees car enthusiasts drive around the city together, the group warned "hoon's number plates will be reported and video sent to police". The incident has sparked a strong reaction from members of Perth's motorist enthusiast scene, with several event coordinators denouncing poor behaviour. A video posted to social media on Tuesday morning from a Perth automotive photographer and car detailing business owner called out what they described as "hoon behaviour". "Everyone's got loved ones they want get home to safely. We don't need anymore numbers to be added to the tolls of deaths on the road. It's already high enough this year," they said. "You are not only endangering your own life if you have passengers you're also endangering their lives. You're also endangering the people around you. It's just not worth it. "Think about the people that you are affecting … your actions have repercussions. "Keep the stupid shit at home. Keep it clean at the meets, don't bring dramas in the meets, don't be a dickhead at the meets, just be respectful." Footage of the incident had been posted and shared on several accounts on Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook. That prompted an angry reaction from Premier Roger Cook, who vowed to keep pursuing "post and boast" laws that aim to prevent people sharing and promoting alleged criminal activity online. "Our post and boast laws will ensure these things aren't put out there in the public domain on social media, increasing the level of awareness and increasing their popularity," he said. Police are urging anyone with information, or anyone who saw the crash, to contact Crime Stoppers.
