Kuala Lumpur's stand against grocery shop licences to foreigners. Enforce it in Sabah: Warisan

Kota Kinabalu: The Federal Government's stand against issuing grocery shop licences to foreigners must be fully enforced in Sabah, especially in areas like Kapayan and Moyog, said Warisan Kapayan Branch Chief Pritchard Gumbaris. He said the presence of foreign-operated grocery shops is once again mushrooming in local villages, pushing aside Sabahan traders and threatening small kampung economies. 'I agree with Minister Nga Kor Ming's statement, but this must not just apply to Peninsular Malaysia. In Sabah, the situation is worsening. Just walk through Kapayan or Moyog and you'll see for yourself,' he said in a statement, Monday. Pritchard, who is also political secretary to Warisan Deputy President Datuk Darell Leiking, blamed lack of enforcement by the current elected representatives for the resurgence of the issue. 'This is not a new problem. We had solved this before through strict enforcement during the Warisan Plus Government, in collaboration with the Penampang District Council (MDC) and local authorities. 'Trading licence applications were vetted thoroughly. Village chiefs had to endorse each one, and we personally interviewed applicants, checked photos and conducted on-site visits. 'We rejected applications linked to foreigners using local proxies or fake documents,' he said. He claimed that under the leadership of Penampang MP Datuk Ewon Benedict and Kapayan Assemblywoman Datuk Jannie Lasimbang, the previous system collapsed. 'Enforcement has failed. The process we built was not maintained, and foreign traders have returned. 'Ewon and Jannie looked the other way. The very problem we fixed is now back, worse than before,' he said. Pritchard said this was not about race or hatred, but about upholding the law and protecting local livelihoods. 'This is about Sabahan kampung shopkeepers who are being squeezed out. The law is already in place, the Sabah Trades Licensing Ordinance 1948 (Cap. 144) spells out restrictions on foreign traders. The issue is not the law, but political will,' Pritchard said. He also called on State Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Joachim Gunsalam to ensure local councils do not allow foreign operators to abuse loopholes. Pritchard said Warisan would reinstate the previous enforcement model if given the mandate in Kapayan. 'We've also proposed an Ombudsman Committee to receive whistleblower reports on licence corruption. It's time to stop the backdoor approvals and political favours. A Wisma Putra statement explained that the joint statement marks a preliminary effort by both governments to work towards the best solution. The Ambalat block spans some 15,000sq km off the coast of Sabah snf is believed to contain significant crude oil reserves. In 2004, PETRONAS awarded a concession to Shell to explore the area, sparking protests from Indonesia, which had granted similar rights to Italian energy company Eni. In 2009, Indonesia protested Malaysia's military presence in the area, and the following year, Indonesian navy vessels purportedly came close to opening fire on a Malaysian navy patrol ship for ignoring orders to leave.

Dilutes the importance of September 16

To the people outside Sabah and Sarawak, they may get confused about which day was it that Sabah and Sarawak became part of Malaysia. The DE carried a front page report on July 25 which read that Sabah leaders were not amused as businesses fume with regards to the additional holiday on the eve of Malaysia Day on 16 September. Aside from how the business community feels, in my opinion this declaration of a public holiday on September 15 has done a great injustice to Sabah and Sarawak. Simply put, it has diluted the significance of September 16 and its meaning to the people of Sabah and Sarawak. September 16 is history. September 15 is not. To the people outside Sabah and Sarawak, they may get confused about which day was it that Sabah and Sarawak became part of Malaysia. History buffs will not be confused but what about our fellow Malaysians who do not have an inkling about the formation of Malaysia as it is not even included in school history books except in passing? Now with this declaration of September 15 being a public holiday, can you blame people for thinking that Malaysia Day is celebrated over two days? Let's be honest about this. Declaring a public holiday on September 15 is a benefit to those in Malaya who want to 'Balik Kampong' because September 15 falls on a Monday. That gives you a break from Saturday 13th - Tuesday 16th. Enough time for thousands in Malaya to 'Balik Kampong' and enjoy themselves. But what about us in Sabah and Sarawak ? You have just diluted a sacred day, a day in history to mark the birth of Malaysia to just another day in the September calendar of events! This isn't right. It never will be. You don't declare August 30 a public holiday but you do so on September 15? Why? Anti-bullying must start at home: Redonah

She said the issue cannot be taken lightly, as some victims have committed suicide and even murdered. 'As a mother, in our country, unlike some others with caste systems, we are all equal. There should be no concept of 'who you are' or 'whose child you are.' This is unacceptable.' 'Power isn't meant to oppress anyone. The awareness and education to prevent bullying need to start at home, with parents making sure their kids understand what bullying is, how to avoid bullying others, and how to stay safe from being bullied.' 'All parties must also play a role in working together to ensure that bullying does not occur, strive to create a caring and attentive environment, and report to the authorities if any bullying is observed, especially in schools,' she said at the PIBG Family Day 2025 event at SK Kota Marudi II. 'Every time I visit schools, whether primary, secondary, or institutions of higher learning, I remind them about bullying cases. Early awareness, especially among students and our children, must begin at home.' 'I teach my child to speak up and report any signs, whether words or anything else, even the smallest matters.
