How to get a Shark LED mask for free with little-known Boots scheme

Daily Mirror2 days ago
We've come across a clever shopping hack on TikTok that not only saves you money on beauty products – including popular high-value items – but also helps you to clear out too
One beauty product that the Mirror beauty team probably gets asked about more than anything else is LED face masks, and in particular, the popular Shark CryoGlow LED Mask. Our head of shopping Zoe thinks it's worth the money – but we've noticed a way that shoppers have been getting their hands on one for 'free'.
Over on TikTok, a number of videos are going viral with shoppers explaining how they're able to get high-value items such as designer perfumes or the Shark LED mask for free using Boots' recycling scheme, something that we admit that we knew very little about before hitting upon this hack. Here's how it works...
First, you'll need to download the Recycle at Boots app, and find your nearest store taking part in the scheme. Next, scan your beauty empties and log them on the app – most materials except for those easily recycled via kerbside services (e.g. glass jars, plastic shampoo bottles) are accepted. This is perfect for getting rid of items such as toothpaste tubes and pumps, which are normally tricky to recycle at home.
Then, simply bring your beauty empties along with you into store (cleaned out as well as possible), scan the QR code on the bin, and drop them in. For every five items you recycle, you'll receive a bonus of 500 Boots Advantage Card points when you spend £10 or more in store within three days. As every Advantage Card point is worth 1p, this gets you £5 worth of points to spend however you like – and these all add up.
Of course, you do have to spend money to accrue these points (£10 to get the 500 point recycling bonus), but if you plan it well, you can time your recycling drop-off with stocking up on everyday essentials such as deodorants, shampoo and even prescriptions.
You will also have to diligently save up your points for a good while before you'll be able to afford to spend them on a pricey item like an LED mask; you'll need 30,000 points to be able to exchange them for a Shark CryoGlow, and on a couple of the most popular TikTok videos on this topic, the creators explain that they saved up their points for 12-18 months before having enough to use to buy this. However, if you're good at saving (and waiting!), it could be worth it in the end – and, of course, you're ensuring all your beauty empties get properly recycled.
Of course, if you can't wait that long to get your hands on an LED mask, you can always just buy the Shark mask immediately for £299.99, and there are lots of other options available to buy nowadays. One of the best value ones is the UKLASH LED Dual Light Pro-Therapy Face Mask, £199 (you can read my full review of it here), while I also really like the CurrentBody LED Light Therapy Face Mask: Series 2, £399.99.

One month until TikTok could be banned (again). What you need to know

In late July, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said in a CNBC interview that if China did not approve a U.S.-drafted deal to sell the platform's American assets, the app would go dark again, once the next ban extension expires on Sept. 17. "If that deal gets approved by the Chinese, then that deal will happen. If they don't approve it, then TikTok is going to go dark," Lutnick previously said. "And those decisions are coming very soon, so let's see what the Chinese do. They've got to approve it. The deal is over to them right now." The White House did not immediately respond for comment when contacted by USA TODAY on Aug. 15. When could TikTok go dark (again) in the US? The next deadline for TikTok to be sold by ByteDance is Sept. 17. Why is TikTok at risk of getting banned? Some government officials are concerned that TikTok poses a national security threat, believing that ByteDance, which is based in Beijing, is sharing U.S. user data with China. TikTok has repeatedly denied these claims. In January, the platform went dark for less than 24 hours under federal legislation signed into law by former President Joe Biden in 2024. Trump has signed executive orders three times now that push back the deadline for when TikTok must be sold, promising that deals with China are on the horizon. The latest was in early July, when Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that he was hopeful Chinese President Xi would agree to a deal to see the platform to the U.S. Greta Cross is a national trending reporter at USA TODAY. Boots offering 'early access' to sell out No7 beauty calendars ahead of Christmas

Get exclusive early access to the sell-out No7 advent calendars and two brand new additions. It might be still early in the year, but there's a major holiday on the horizon. We're not talking Halloween or Bonfire Night, but Christmas. While we know it might be a little early to mention the dreaded 'C' word just now, there's no denying that retailers are eagerly anticipating a busy period before it inevitably sneaks up on us. How do we know this? Well Boots just opened up the waiting list for its advent calendar selection this year, giving shoppers the chance to get early access to its range of advent calendar almost a full three months before we hit December. The health and beauty chain's calendars are highly coveted every year, with this year's waiting list offering exclusive 48-hour early access to its bestselling No7 advent calendars that always sell out. This includes the lavish No7 Ultimate Beauty Advent Calendar that remains one of the firm's most extravagant options during the festive period, and this year's offering looks better than ever. Before we get into what we know so far, it's worth noting that other retailers opening up waiting lists ahead of the festive period include Holland and Barret and Lookfantastic. While we don't have all the details yet, we can confirm that Boot's 2025 calendar is set to be packed with 25 full-sized products from the brand's bestselling ranges including anti-ageing Future Renew to its limited edition Pro-Artist cosmetics. Overall, the entire worth of the contents is said to come to over £530, but it comes with a price-tag of just £175, offering beauty fanatics a staggering saving of £355 in total on some top-rated products. The exact same calendar last year came with the same price-tag, but was worth a little bit less at £514.39, which means the 2025 calendar will provide some extra savings for shoppers. Like previous years, the Ultimate Calendar looks to be packaged within a beautiful box that can also double up as storage for cosmetics, makeup and accessories. Ultimate Calendar aside, the waiting list also covers the equally popular No7 25 Days of Beauty Advent Calendar that will house indulgent award-winning beauty and skincare items that will be worth over £238, but cost just £60 overall. To ensure beauty fans don't miss out on the sell-out No7 calendars, they can sign up with their details on the Boots website now to get the chance to bag it early before they go on general sale online on Thursday, September 4. They'll also get the chance to win an exclusive pre-sale discount, alongside the chance to win a Secret Escapes voucher that is worth an incredible £400. Beauty deal of the week Get multiple benefits for the skin by taking advantage of this 53 percent discount on the unique L'Oreal Paris serum. The firm's breakthrough Age Defying Serum Le Duo provides the benefits of two serums in just one pump, being the only bottle on the market to target firmness, radiance and the appearance of wrinkles. Right now, it can be yours for just £17.95 when bought on Amazon. Since a 30ml bottle usually retails £37.99, it offers an incredible £20 saving - but the deal will only be around for a limited time. This dual-function serum has been hailed as "a breakthrough innovation from L'Oréal labs", with the beloved brand suggesting it has been clinically proven to "reverse up to five years of wrinkles." In one chamber, there is a collagen Peptide Booster to rebuild firmness and smooth out wrinkles, while the other boasts powerhouse vitamins B3 and C to reignite radiance and even out skin tone. Said to be suitable for all skin types, even sensitive, this serum has been lauded for its "non greasy" texture that doesn't leave any residue on the skin or cause that dreaded 'pilling' when combined with other skincare products. Boasting a 4.3 rating in total, one review read: "A second satisfied customer said: "This serum is a game-changer! It leaves my skin feeling hydrated, smoother, and visibly radiant. A luxurious treat that's worth every drop." Don't miss Amazon's 53 percent discount on the Age Defying Serum Le Duo (30ml) that is now £17.95, down from £37.99. And Boots hasn't stopped there, as the health and beauty chain is set to launch two new 24-day calendars this year - with both offering a staggering saving of 76 percent in total. There will be the 24 Beauty Stars Luxury Advent Calendar that is packed premium treats that are worth over £600, but costs just £150. Meanwhile, the 24 Days of Skin Advent Calendar will be worth over £285, but cost a much more affordable £70. Similar to the No7 options, shoppers can sign up for early access on the Boots website, although they will only get 24-hours early access to the calendars on Tuesday, September 9 before the general sale opens on Wednesday, September 10. Don't miss early access to Boots' No7 Advent Calendars and the new 24-day Advent Calendars by signing up to the waiting list now.

Once beloved of young girls, what has gone wrong with Claire's?

Claire's has been a staple on high streets across the UK and Ireland, since it first opened in Britain in 1997. It was the first shop my friends and I would run to after getting our £5 pocket money from our parents back in 2010 but, as we got older, we left it behind. Hearing of the closure, I couldn't help but feel sad, a part of my childhood was being taken away so I headed down to my local shopping centre, Buchanan Galleries in Glasgow, to see what's changed. Turns out, it's nothing. The shop looked as if it had been standing still in time since my last visit in 2018. Same purple interior, same packaging, same bright pencil cases and toys that cover the shop wall to wall. Sitting across from one of its competitors, Lovisa, whose stores are designed in a minimalist, luxury style, Claire's looked like a cluttered mess. Worse, while it was full of displays and posters for deals it was devoid of customers. So why aren't people shopping here anymore? While in the store, I reached for a white flower hair clip, nice, but nothing special. Turning it over to check the price, it quickly got put back. With the rise of Chinese online companies like Shien and Temu, it's hard to justify £6 for one hair clip when you can buy three identical-looking ones for only £2 online. I checked out a pair of cat ears on an early Halloween stall which were £8. Even those who don't shop online at cheap e-tailers know this is extortionate, one Google search later and a similar pair of ears was on my phone for £2.50 from Sainsbury's. Even the pencil cases were priced at over tenner. If I was going back to school, I know my mum wouldn't have let me go near them and would have me pick something from ASDA instead. Claire's reputation took a hit when stories of piercings gone wrong surfaced. As someone with many piercings, one of which closed over after I got it from Claire's, I think the retailer made a major strategic mistake here. The use of guns can cause swelling, longer healing times and potential complications due to blunt force trauma. When I passed my driving test, I wanted to celebrate. I made my way to Claire's and got my first cartilage piercing. It never healed. I had to take it out three months later. I spoke to a former customer who said: "I knew loads of people with infections and swore I'd never go back". Their Instagram and TikTok come across as lazy and uninspired. The two social media are a copy of one another. Instagram is an unorganised mess, posts look unprofessional, with dark lighting and low quality. @Clairesstores have eight highlights that are random and inconsistent. One highlight, 'Wicked' has only 2 posts, both of which are from last year. Scrolling through, I found only one professional-looking post, where they used fruit wedges to model different ear jewellery during summer. That was well done but it needs more of that. After my shop and scroll, it's no surprise Claire's is failing. A rebrand should have commenced years ago. Prices need to be realistic to attract pocket-money customers. The shops, of which there are 278 in the UK, can still be an easy go-to when you need some last minute hair gems, but that's often a last resort when there's no time to buy them off Amazon. And that's just not good enough.
