Sawadika Koh Samui: This island in Thailand is emerging as a favourite with filmmakers in Bollywood and the West
Imagine this: walking barefoot on white sand beaches in the warm glow of the rising sun. The pristine waters make you forget all about your phone and 'urgent Zoom meetings'. Did this image take you to Thailand?
This Southeast Asian country's stunning locales have been a favourite backdrop for Bollywood shoots — from the title track of Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai (2000) at Phra Nang Beach in Krabi to Housefull 2's (2012) song Do You Know and the destination wedding scenes from Student of the Year (2012).
In 2024, over 2.1 million Indian tourists visited Thailand, making India the country's third-largest tourist market. And 2025 is already seeing strong momentum. With more direct flights, and a collective craving for sun and sand, Indians are heading to Thailand in droves — and discovering gems like Koh Samui along the way.
The island of Koh Samui, right off the east coast of Thailand, is known for its beaches, nightlife, and warm hospitality. It's growing popularity was evident to the author as throngs of international travellers waited for their connecting flight from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport.
The more than hour-long flight touched down on Koh Samui International airport's runway — bordered with breath taking greenery that set the tone for what's to come.
Like the food. When in Thailand, especially Koh Samui, start with a sip of the freshest coconut water you'll ever taste. Trust us, you're not ready for it. From street-side mango sticky rice and local specialties like salapao (Thai-style steamed buns) to the seven-course meal at Tree Tops Signature Dining at Anantara Lawana — every dish is out of this world.
Besides what Koh Samui already offers, another reason why it's become a trendy travel destination is thanks to the new season of The White Lotus. Yours truly got to experience some of the spots that featured on the show, including Anantara Bophut and Anantara Lawana resorts.
The White Lotus effect basically attributes the show's appeal for boosting travel at whichever location it's set in. Hotels have reported as much as a whopping 104% year-over-year increase in web-traffic from users after the show's third season released earlier this year.
The library of Anantara Bophut became a jewellery store that gets robbed, while the stunning entrance was retained as is for the fictional White Lotus resort. It's surreal to see the lamps bringing the night to life, just like they did on the show. The Singing Bird lounge, nestled atop a 120-year-old tree at Anantara Lawana, featured as a bar on the show.
And you realise why the makers chose it as you experience it yourself. No wonder viewers were curious. After the show's premiere in February, a travel portal reported that search results for Koh Samui increased by 15% compared to the January average and by 50% compared to the same time in 2024.

After he graduated, we continued participating in inter-college drama competitions. I remember one particular day — I was rehearsing for a college play, but we didn't have a director. We never had the budget to hire directors from outside. That day, Asit ji came to see the rehearsals. He was just watching from the side, observing the process closely. He once told to me, 'Pandey, should I direct you?' At that time, we didn't have the budget to hire a professional director, and since he had the experience, being my senior, I agreed immediately. I told him, 'Yes, go ahead and direct.' He ended up directing that play, which was titled Bhikhmange, written by Sudhir Kodi ji. It turned out to be a major success and received several awards across inter-college drama competitions, including Best Director and Best Play. That play became a turning point for him, and as you can see today, he's successfully running Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. Sometimes I jokingly feel a bit envious that he gave up on acting to become a producer. Maybe if I had taken a similar path, I'd be in a comfortable position too (laughs)." "Okay not being on biggest set in world..." Ridhi Dogra opens up about mental health, says she chooses work that makes her 'feel valued'
By Zoya Aziz New Delhi [India], May 30 (ANI): Actor Ridhi Dogra, who made her Bollywood debut with 'Lakadbaggha' in 2023 and was later seen in big films including Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan, recently opened up about how she takes care of her mental health while working in the entertainment industry. Ridhi has been part of the industry for many years now, starting with her Television debut in Jhoome Jiya Re. But even with all the success, the journey hasn't been easy. There was a time early on in her career when she felt like she wasn't 'feeling happy.' However, she made some clear decisions that continue to help her stay grounded and happy to this day. When asked if she ever felt the need to pause and take a break from the pressure, Dogra told ANI, 'I love what I do, so I think when you love what you do, you don't really need to take a break from it. But yeah, very early on, I decided I only want to do work that I love, and I only want to go on sets where I am valued. So, I created that environment for myself, where I'm okay not being on the biggest set in the world. I want to be on a set where people want me there--that's what's important in my life.' 'In my circumstances... I think only once in my life--I'm not going to talk about the project--but only once, early in my career, I felt like what you're saying, that I wasn't feeling happy, or whatever, whatever. And I quickly changed that. I said, 'You know what? I'm not going to do anything that doesn't feel right to me. I'll only work with people who believe in what I'm doing, who are excited about what I'm doing, or what we're making, and that's it.' That really has helped me till now...' The Asur actress went on to speak about the emotional demands of being an actor and why it's important to take breaks--not just to rest, but to emotionally recharge. 'You do need a break sometimes. As actors, we need a lot of breaks, not because our work is hectic, but because we're always wearing the sensitivity cap. You can never drop it. We are using our emotions to portray different feelings, and that's a big gamble we play. We are constantly trying to show various emotions, and that means we are carrying those emotions at all times. For somebody like that, whether it's a musician who sings and connects to God, we do need downtime. So, after every project of mine, I do take a holistic wellness break,' Ridhi shared.
