The post Mavericks' Cooper Flagg grabs attention with 1-word post after NBA Draft appeared first on ClutchPoints.
Cooper Flagg and the basketball-watching world knew he was going to be selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft. That distinct honor was projected before the 6-foot-9 forward even suited up for the Duke Blue Devils, and he solidified his spot on the top of the board with a historic freshman campaign. Even so, the Dallas Mavericks rookie still made sure to truly appreciate this once-in-a-lifetime moment

Following a celebration and interview-filled Wednesday night, Flagg was able to process everything that transpired in Brooklyn, New York's Barclays Center. He took to social media and described the unforgettable experience with just one word.
'Blessed,' the 18-year-old posted on Instagram, along with some photos that he and his family should look back on with the utmost pride and satisfaction. The sport's latest phenom has officially arrived in The Association. He has the versatile skill set, composed demeanor and on-court intensity to ensure that this is only the beginning of what many anticipate will be a long and prosperous NBA career.
Cooper Flagg is inspiring a ton of confidence
Although the Mavericks will not publicly say it, they are hoping Flagg can immediately take a leap toward stardom. Actually, it is reasonable to call him the team's X-factor going into the 2025-26 season. Most rookies do not have to carry such a label, but the Naismith College Player of the Year is a unique prospect. Furthermore, he is walking into a unique situation.

Dallas has a potential long-term answer after controversially trading Luka Doncic, but make no mistake, there is still a strong sense of urgency percolating through American Airlines Center. Anthony Davis is a two-way powerhouse, Kyrie Irving remains an offensive dynamo when healthy, and the supporting cast is comprised of promising and valuable contributors. Cooper Flagg could potentially boost the Mavs' ceiling to another level, and not just in the long run.
Expecting the Newport, Maine native to make an immediate impact and carry a decent workload while Irving recovers from his torn ACL is admittedly ambitious. It also places a great amount of pressure on his shoulders. But as his latest Instagram post suggests, this young man is grounded and eager to challenge himself.
Flagg will try to further capitalize on his blessings as he gets to work with the Mavericks.

Cooper Flagg is paying homage with Mavericks jersey number selection

After joining the Dallas Mavericks on June 25, No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg opted to return to his original jersey number worn up until last season at Duke. Flagg wore No. 32 at Nokomis Regional High School in Maine and the Montverde Academy in Central Florida. He was forced to change it to No. 2 when he began his freshman campaign in Durham, since it is retired to honor two-time NCAA champion Christian Laettner. The 18-year-old chose to don No. 2 with the Blue Devils to honor a friend who died from brain cancer in November 2022 at 19 years old. He made the switch back to No. 32 because his mother, Kelly, wore it while playing in high school. "My mom wore 32 when she was in high school, and that was always her number," Flagg said in a video posted by the Mavericks on X. "She had teammates in college that wore it, so she didn't wear it in college. She wore it in high school, so that's really why." Flagg was the AP national college player of the year after leading Duke to the Final Four, averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks on 38.5% shooting from 3-point range. He became the 22nd player in program history to be a consensus first-team All-American. The 6-foot-8 Maine native debuted with the Mavericks in the NBA Summer League, averaging 20.5 points, five rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals on 35.7% shooting from the field. He produced 31 points in his second and final appearance on July 12. Flagg paid great homage to his high school friend at Duke with No. 2, and will now be playing in front of his mother, wearing her number again, beginning next season with the Mavericks. Note: Throughout August, Rookie Wire is looking at every first-round pick and why each player selected their respective jersey number as they make the jump to the NBA.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander reacts to being NBA 2K26 cover athlete: 'A dream come true'

Like King Midas, anything Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has touched over the last year has turned to gold. The 27-year-old is fresh off one of the greatest individual seasons ever. An MVP award and a championship ring headlined his historic campaign. The Oklahoma City Thunder cemented their spot among the greatest teams ever. A historic 68-14 regular-season record translated into the playoffs with the manifestation of a championship. Now, there's no denying Gilgeous-Alexander is one of the best players in the league and is well on his way to being an all-time great. After the championship parade, the accolades kept piling up. He may need to build a second trophy case as his MVP, Western Conference Finals MVP and NBA Finals MVP awards were likely stuffed in the first one. To continue his offseason celebrations, Gilgeous-Alexander was also named the NBA 2K26 cover athlete. It's an honor only the NBA's best players have. Gilgeous-Alexander has skyrocketed to the top with three straight 30-plus point campaigns. It's only right that the Year of SGA gets to don the NBA 2K cover. After all, he's one of the highest-rated players in the video game. "It means the world. A game I grew up playing since I was young and can remember," Gilgeous-Alexander said. "To know I'm the cover of the game is a surreal feeling. A dream come true." Gilgeous-Alexander is an unapologetic 2K head. He always talks to Ronnie 2K about the game and gives him feedback. After hoping to land on cover art, the 27-year-old made it undeniable with such a historic season. "I was ecstatic. I was through the moon," Gilgeous-Alexander said. "Tried to hold back some tears." NBA 2K26 will release on Sept. 5. The annual game serves as a reminder to get basketball back in the mainstream after the offseason is about over. The Thunder and Gilgeous-Alexander will enter the 2025-26 season as a favorite to repeat as champions.
